- Sars glorious triumph as gallant Rovers falter at final hurdle -
Sarsfields 2-14 Bride Rovers 2-13
At the outset bouquets to Bride Rovers and Sarsfields who provided a thrilling spectacle in last Sunday’s pulsating co senior hurling championship final which the Riverstown based club triumphed over a gallant Rovers side by the narrowest of margins.
A magnificent Robert O’Driscoll goal from play in the 53rd minute, after being put through by team captain Kieran Murphy was the Sars clincher, thus bridging a gap of over half a century to capture their third senior championship title, after a clean sporting contest at colourful Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
The winners went on the ascendancy from the throw-in with corner forward Tadhg Og Murphy off target from play prior to the vastly experienced Pat Ryan converting a brace of white flags, from a close free and play inside the opening five minutes. Sixty seconds later Pat Walsh replaced the injured Aidan Kearney in the Rovers defence.
Before Barry Johnson pointed from the centre of the field to open the Rovers account, after Brian Murphy was fouled. An exchange of white flags courtesy of Sean Ryan and Daniel Kearney, with Johnson again on target from another long range free, followed by a goal from play by corner forward Michael Collins after receiving from Jerome O’Driscoll, put the Bridesiders in front.
Prior to Pat Ryan reducing the deficit with a long range free which left the Rovers marginally ahead, with the scoreboard reading 1-3 to 0-5 at the end of the opening quarter. From here to the interval the Bridesiders dictated the play, with superb scores from the very industrious Jerome O’Driscoll and Sean Ryan.
Interspersed by a pointed free from midfielder Pat Ryan left Bride Rovers in a strong position leading by five points on the scoreline of 1-8 to 0-6 at the interval. Sixty seconds after the resumption Jerome O’Driscoll increased his side’s lead from a pointed close in free, as John Murphy replaced the off form Ronan Murphy in the Sars attack.
After a sequence of missed chances at either end the giant sized Cork senior footballer Michael Cussen played a vital role for the winners, initially whipping over a point from play in the 36th minute.
Followed by a flicked goal three minutes later from a high sliothar hurled from midfield by Tadhg Og Murphy. Team captain Kieran Murphy added a white flag from play to cut the deficit to the minimum 1-9 to 1-8 and after Sars goalkeeper Alan Kennedy denied Michael Collins a green flag with a superb save, Jerome O’Driscoll pointed a 40 metre free to increase the Rovers lead 1-10 to 1-8 at the three-quarter stage.
However, Sars rallied again with a brace of white flags courtesy of Pat Ryan and sub Daniel Roche both from play to level proceedings 1-10 apiece with ten minutes left to play.
The courage and spirit of the Bridesiders enabled them to regain the lead once more with another brace of points from the sticks of Michael Collins and Jerome O’Driscoll.
But the trend of the game changed after Robert O’Driscoll’s goal, followed by a Tadhg Og Murphy point added a similar score from Cussen put Sars in the ascendancy with four minutes of normal time left and when Pat Ryan’s white flag from play further increased Sars lead 2-13 to 1-12, it appeared all over.
After an exchange of pointed frees by O’Driscoll and Ryan, Sarsfields looked comfortable, four points clear with the game gone into injury time,
However, true to tradition the Rovers battled back once again, with Sean Ryan doubling Jerome O’Driscoll’s well placed 65 to the back of the Sar’s net to leave the minimum between them once more. The Bridesiders seemed certain to gain parity which would have given them a well deserved draw.
But as hard and all as they tried they failed to get the sliothar beyond midfield and the final shrill of referee John Sexton’s whistle enabled Sar’s to come in from the championship cold to regain the title they last held in 1957, much to the joy and euphoria of their delighted followers.
Therefore in conclusion, we salute and congratulate the new champions and extend best wishes to them in the forthcoming provincial and hopefully All Ireland club championship series. And to a truly gallant Bride Rovers squad we commend them for their shear endeavour in contributing to a magnificent final showpiece in their inaugural decider.

- Winning streak comes to an end! -
Castlebridge Celtic 0 Inch Utd 1
Our juniors travelled to Inch last Sunday to try and reverse an earlier defeat this year to the home side in the Bolger Cup.
This venue is never an easy one to get a result at and on again on the day, despite having the major share of the possession, we failed to convert this advantage into goals and as a result it was the home side that took advantage of a rare attack and a hesitant defence to snatch a goal and all three points in the end.
Not a day to remember for many of our players and this is a performance we will want to forget quickly! Finally, we wish George a speedy recovery from his shoulder injury and hope that he’ll be back in action as soon as possible.

- Keane rugby brilliance not enough for courageous Colaiste -
Colaiste an Chraoibhin 12 St Augustans, Dungarvan 35
Colaiste an Chraoibhin ended the 2007/08 season with a semi-final loss against Dungarvan in the County Waterford town recently. For various reasons, last year’s under 14 Cleary Cup was held over until the 2008/09 season to be completed. Unfortunately, Colaiste could not repeat the rugby heroics of last season as they went down to a huge and strong St Augustans.
Colaiste an Chraoibhin may have been well beaten on the scoreboard but the highlights of the contest all came for the men wearing the navy and sky blue of Colaiste. From the kick-off the Waterford team kicked long into the Colaiste 22.
The Fermoy rugby side made short work of this tough kick as they quickly countered to put St Augustans on the back foot. After slick handling in the Colaiste backline, the ball eventually found the flying winger that is William Keane.
Without any hesitation Keane faced three opponents and one by one stepped in and out of each challenge to run half the length of the field for the opening try of the game. Paul Dee converted and Colaiste led by 7 points to zero.
Dungarvan eventually came into the game and imposed their physical strength to score three unconverted tries to take the lead. However, the Colaiste lads were not dead and buried yet and another fantastic try by William Keane brought the Fermoy school back into the game.
The second half saw a number of changes in the Dungarvan team and the obvious gulf in size and strength up front made it impossible for Colaiste to get a result out of the game. The scoreline was cruel on Colaiste in the second half, as Dungarvan finished in style with three late tries as Colaiste tired.
Best on the day were Dean Moorehouse, Dylan Foley, Brian Roche and Colm McCarthy in the pack, while Paul Dee, Eoghan Cody and William Keane were faultless in the backs also.
Colaiste an Chraoibhin team: Kyran Lyons, Robin O’Flaherty, Deane Moorehouse, Gerard Healy, Daniel McHugh, Dylan Foley, Brian Roche, Colm McCarthy, Ryan O’Connor, Petey Clancy, David Bracken, Paul Dee, Shane Keane, William Keane, Eoghan Cody. Subs used: Rory Clancy, Jed Hayes, Brian Sibiya, Ian Clancy. Subs: Oliver Critch, Nicholas Critch, James Ladd, Niall Hally, Darragh
- County final awaits the Castlelyons girls -
Preparations are well underway in Castlelyons as the girls prepare for their first ever county final. This year has been the best so far in the history of the club.
As well as reaching the championship final they have also progressed to the league final. Castlelyons reached this final by beating Youghal in the first round and victory in the semi-final over a strong Blarney side. Training has been very successful all through the year with a panel of twenty eight.
Everyone has shown great commitment and hopefully will reap the benefits this Saturday. The game is fixed for 4pm but the venue has not yet been decided. There will be posters put up around the village giving final details.
The mentors have done an excellent job right through the year. These include Fr Dan McCarthy, Seanie Barry, Peter Murphy and Eamonn Fitzgerald. This weekend all attention will be on the county final. It is everyone’s intention to finish off the job.
We are very confident that the people of Castlelyons will turn out in great numbers to help us bring home the title.
- Disappointment for intermediates -
There was disappointment for Glenroe intermediate hurlers when they exited the county championship at the semi-final stage on Saturday last, being defeated by Caherline in a double header at Kilmallock.
Bruff defeated Mungret in the other semi-final by 0-17 to 0-15.
Glenroe 1-12 Caherline 3-9.
Glenroe essentially lost this game in the first half when they could only score three points, with two of them coming from frees.
John Quane was wide of the mark from a 30m free in the 2nd min. Stephen Walsh got the opening score, a point from a 45m free in the 3rd min. Caherline responded with a point from a free from a similar distance thirty seconds later.
Two scorable chances were missed by Glenroe before Caherline’s full forward scored the first goal in the 6th min. Both sides exchanged points in the 8th min. with Thomas Crawford scoring from play for Glenroe. John Quane scored the third Glenroe point from a 45m free in the 11th min. and they failed to score for the remainder of the first half.
Caherline added a further three points, with two of them coming from frees, to hold a 1-5 to 0-3 lead at the break. Glenroe dominated play for the first five minutes of the second half.
John Quane pointed from a 25m free on Eoin Walsh one minute into the half. Mike O’Brien gave a lifeline to Glenroe one minute later when he scored a goal. A further foul on Eoin Walsh resulted in John Quane pointing to bring the sides back onto level terms in the 34th min.
Caherline responded with two points in quick succession to regain the lead. Two wides by Glenroe brought their misses to nine. Fouls on Mike O’Brien and Stephen Walsh resulted in John Quane pointing twice from the 35m line to bring the teams level once again at 1-7 a-piece by the 43rd min. The outcome of the game was in the balance at this stage.
Glenroe regained the lead when a foul on Eoin Walsh resulted in John Quane pointing from the 45m line. The conceding of a second goal by Glenroe at the end of the third quarter gave the initiative to Caherline.
Both sides exchanged points before Danny Murphy pointed to reduce the margin to one point with 10 mins. remaining. A third goal by Caherline put Glenroe on the back foot at a critical stage in the game.
Points from frees by John Quane (25m) and Stephen Walsh (70m) gave some hope to Glenroe with 4 mins. remaining.
However, Caherline scored a further point from a 60m free to complete the scoring and run out winners by three points in the end. Despite the fact that Glenroe could only score three points in the opening half they had chances of winning the game in the second half but were unable to do so.
The conceding of three goals at one end of the field and the fact that ten of the Glenroe thirteen scores came from frees at the other end of the field shows where the game was lost on this occasion.
Mike O’Brien, captaining the team, played despite sustaining a serious hand injury a few days previous to the game and managed to contribute a goal early in the second half. We wish him a speedy recovery with his injury.
Best for Glenroe were Kieran Tobin, Johnny Murphy, Stephen Walsh, Danny Murphy and Justin McCarthy.
Team and scorers: K Tobin, J B Murphy, P Coffey, M Mee, S Fox, J Murphy, S Walsh (0-2 from frees), D Murphy (0-1), G Coffey, M Mansell, T Crawford (0-1), D J Sheehy, J Quane (0-8 from frees), M O’Brien (1-0), E Walsh. Subs used: J McCarthy for D J Sheehy (halftime); D Kelly for M Mansell (39th min); D McCarthy for G Coffey (47th min); M Mansell for T Crawford (50th min.); D J Sheehy for E Walsh (58th min.). Team and scorers: K Tobin, J B Murphy, P Coffey, M Mee, S Fox, J Murphy, S Walsh (0-2 from frees), D Murphy (0-1), G Coffey, M Mansell, T Crawford (0-1), D J Sheehy, J Quane (0-8 from frees), M O’Brien (1-0), E Walsh. Subs used: J McCarthy for D J Sheehy (halftime); D Kelly for M Mansell (39th min); D McCarthy for G Coffey (47th min); M Mansell for T Crawford (50th min.); D J Sheehy for E Walsh (58th min.).
Thanks to the team management of Tom Tobin, Sean O’Donnell, Mike McCarthy, Mike Sheehy and Dick Coffey for the professional manner in which they prepared the team throughout the year. Also thanks to the players for their efforts, to Georgina O’Brien, Bill Hayes, Dave McCarthy, Dinny Condon, Mike Carroll, Ollie Coffey and to the ladies who helped out catering for the players throughout the year.
