- Great skill and enthusiasm the order of the day at U8 hurling blitz -
U8 BLITZ
The annual U 8 hurling blitz took place last Saturday, June 28th at the Ballygiblin GAA grounds and this year’s event was again kindly sponsored by Horgan’s Delicatessen Supplies Ltd.
The weather was kind on the day and at 10.30am, in front of a large crowd of parents and supporters, 14 teams lined out behind the piper for the pre match parade.
The array of colour was fantastic as the teams paraded around the pitch. Following the playing of the National Anthem the matches kicked off. The clubs contesting in the two groups on the day were Group 1 - Castlelyons, Cahir, Carrigtwohill, Kilta Og, Newtownshandrum, St. Catherines, Fermoy and Watergrasshill and group 2 - Ballygiblin, Kildorrery, Ballyhea, Bride Rovers, Killavullen and Doneraile.
In the three hours of hurling great skill and enthusiasm was displayed by the young stars much to the delight of the crowd and hurling was the overall winner on the day.
The Cork hurler and All Ireland medal winner Timmy McCarthy was on hand to present the medals to all the teams at the end of proceedings. Timmy was given a great reception by the crowd and in his address to all the players Timmy’s advice was simple –
“it is not just enough to come to training each week, but you must keep practising at home to bring the skills to the next level and to get a ball and hit it off the wall at home each day to sharpen the eye and first touch”.
Timmy was on hand to sign autographs and pose for photos much to the appreciation of all the young stars. The club is very thankful to Timmy for giving his time and for his words of encouragement.
Overall the day was a tremendous success and this was down to the great support received which ensured everything ran smoothly.
We would like to thank all the clubs which played in the tournament and everyone who helped run this event - the organisers, the referees, parking attendants, parents and friends who helped with the catering and did great work in the marquee on the day keeping everyone fed, the Red Cross, Kathleen Fitzgerald from the Anglesboro Pipe Band and all others who helped in any way.
Finally, a sincere word of thanks to Michael Horgan and his family for their generosity and support once again.
Go raibh mile maith agaibh go leir.
BALLYGIBLIN U8
Under the watchful eye of John O’Sullivan the Ballygiblin team did very well in the blitz with victories over Killavullen and Kildorrey but Bride Rovers proved to have the edge in the one game the team lost.
Matthew Dawson was great in goals throughout with good saves and tremendous clearances and Mark Keane (5 scores), Christy O’Sullivan (1 score) and Thomas Vaughan (1 score) showed great leadership at midfield and took great scores in the three games.
Our strong defence of Andy Gubbins, Sean Clancy, Conor Cahill, Dillon Ahern and David Roche held very firm under pressure and cleared the lines with determination.
Up front Eugene O’Donoghue, Thomas Fitzgerald, Jodi Finn, Joseph Clancy, Oran Brennan Hayes, Sean Brown and Aaron O’Brien showed great skill and speed in all the games and kept the opposition on their toes at all times. It was a great team effort and well done to all the lads.
Training will continue every Wednesday evening at 7pm with newcomers always welcome.
Ballygiblin 1-09 Cahir 0-12
Our under 16 team played a challenge match against Cahir at Cahir last Friday night. The game ended level and proved to be a good workout for our side as we prepare for our championship fixture against Mallow in August.
Team: Joseph O’Sullivan, Sean Molloy, S Barrett, Robert Frewen, Daniel Dwane, Fionn Corbett, James Sheehan, Luke Hanna, Brian O’Sullivan, Liam O’Gorman, Sam Murphy, Barry Coffey, Tom Molan, Brendan Allen, P Corbett.
We look forward to a good turnout at training as we continue our preparation for the championship.
Training on Wednesday 7-8.30 at Ballygiblin pitch and we will have a challenge match against Watergrasshill in Watergrasshill on Friday night at 8.
U14 FOOTBALL
On Wednesday, 25th June, we travelled to Glenville to take on the local side in a challenge game. Once again we travelled with over 20 players available for selection, and a further four players unavailable due to injury. We took this opportunity to try some players in new positions.
On a good night for football we started very brightly and took some very impressive scores throughout the first half. By half time we were 4 points up. We made a number of changes at half time but to be fair to the players who came on they fitted in straight away and contributed to some very good scores during the second half.
We went on to win this game by a few points and the performance and attitude by the team was top class. Once again every player got a game.
All the work done in training is beginning to pay off and we are working very well as a team. With championship only a matter of weeks away we need to continue to put in the effort. We are scheduled to play away to Charleville tonight at 7.30pm in round three of the league. This game will give a good indication of how far we have come from earlier in the year.
We are scheduled to play Mill Rovers in the championship on Monday, 21st July, in Glanworth at 7.30pm. Mark the date in your diary and come along and support a great bunch of kids.
CUL CAMP
Cul Camp starts on Monday, July 7th, to Fri, July 11th, in Mitchelstown GAA Pitch, Limerick Road. Registration is on Monday 9.30am.
Please ensure all players have shin-guards/boots/hurley/helmet, packed lunch and for the rainy days, raingear! Please note the club cannot be responsible for players before 9.45am and after 2.15pm.

CLUB GEAR LAUNCHED
Last Friday night, our new club gear was launched with great success. Special thanks to our junior club, Supermacs, Jim Sheehan Groundworks, Ml Devaney Developments and Mountain Spring Water for their generous donations. Without these we would not have been able to supply the gear at such fantastic value.
EVERY SUCCESS
Every success to the junior As and minors who are out this weekend in championship. We urge all juveniles to support the lads in their new club gear. U8/U10 No training on Fri night due to junior As in championship in Doneraile.
Friday, July 4th the ‘A’ final of the local singles league, sponsored by Tom’s Tavern, sees Alan O’Dwyer meet John McDonagh. This should be a great game and will commence at 7pm. The B, C and D finals were held last week and all the games were very exciting.
In the ‘B’ final Stephen Slattery, whose grandfather is David Slattery and handball played a big part in their family. Stephen’s opponent was John Hurley and John’s father Pat also played handball in his youth. In the first game John won and Stephen took the second to a tie break for 11 aces. Stephen got off to a good start even though John put in a great effort Stephen took the vital game.
In the C league another great final when John Sheehan, Kilworth met Donie Gilmartin from Tipp. John Sheehan had the better serve on the day and there were outstanding rallies. John Sheehan won in two straight games and took the C competition.
In the D final the first game between Mark Stapleton and Brian O’Hagan was a cracker with Mark winning narrowly, but in the second game Mark won well and took the D title. Juvenile 60 x 30 Competition Fermoy have entered players from U11 up to U16. These games will be played in Cullen in the next few weeks.
This Saturday and Sunday, July 5th and 6th, we will have our church gate collection. Your support would be appreciated.
Usual collectors to help out please.
- Summer Cup Ladies Win -
Our grade 5 ladies 4 team had a great win in the first round of the summer cup match against Lakewood on Monday night.
The Kilworth team was made up of two pairings Liz O’Brien and Nessa Harnett won one of their two matches and Majella Blackburn and Mary Blackburn also won one of their two matches. This left honours even at two matches each for Kilworth and Lakewood. A super mixed tiebreak set was necessary.
For Kilworth, Liz O’Brien and Majella Blackburn won this super mixed by 6-3 after a very exciting contest. Best of luck to this team in the next round when they play Carrigaline.
Tennis Heroes - Our new doubles tournament is due to start up again shortly so all those interested should sign up their names on the notice board.
Juvenile Coaching Juvenile coaching continues this weekend on Sunday mornings with Bill and Caitriona. Club Night Remember Thursday night is club night and all are welcome to attend.

- Michael Atkins wins captain’s prize -
A turnout of over 220 competitors made for a great weekend of golf for Jim Moran’s captain’s prize. The man above was on our side as the weather was perfect for golf.
On Friday and Saturday we had 18 holes to contend with and the top 27 then headed out Saturday evening for a nine hole playoff. In the lead for the playoff were Michael English and Clem Leonard with net scores of 66. Close behind were Michael Atkins, Ken O’Keeffe and Kieran Walsh.
During the course of the playoff the word coming back to the club-house was that the lead had been changing hands on numerous occasions but it was the scores on the cards that were going to tell the final story. This was in the capable hands of Michael Fogarty and Kieran Clancy. It was very close at the top with only 1 shot between 1st and 3rd with Michael Atkins taking the spoils with an overall score of 99.5 net.
Thomas Carmody who was 4 shots behind at the start of the playoff, finished in 2nd with a net score of 100 and in 3rd was Clem Leonard with a net score of 100.5.
A great night was had by all with plenty of food and drink. Entertainment was provided by Jimmy Drea and Kim’s People, thanks to them.
Thanks to Jennifer Hurley and her crew for the lovely food.
MUNSTER BOYS OPEN
Next week we are hosting the Munster boys’ open tournament. This is the main event on the calendar for all up and coming golfers.

On Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th, two 18 hole rounds of golf and the top 54 qualifiers will play 2x18 holes on the Friday. Mitchelstown is represented by 2 of our most promising golfers - Roy and Dean O’Riordan.

- FERMOY BOXING CLUB UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT -
On April 28th, ’08 Fermoy Boxing Club held its AGM at Fermoy Community Youth Centre. The main purpose of this meeting was to elect a new board of officers to take over the running of the club.
Over the last few years even with the success Fermoy Boxing Club has had, it was felt by most club members that it was time for a change and to turn Fermoy Boxing Club back into the great club it once was.
The new officers elected are club president Denis Noonan, hon-secretary John Bowes, hon treasurer Pat Bowes and child development officer Ciara Noonan who is also an Irish international boxer. The club now feels that with the newly elected officers at the helm, the club will go from strength to strength.
Already the new board of officers have been busy at work and have secured the use of the pavilion at St Colman’s College for training from September onwards. This is a massive boost to the club as it will allow them to erect and use some of its new equipment including punch bags, speed balls and weights.
TRAINING
Training for the new season will commence on Monday night, July 7th at 7pm at Fermoy Community Youth Centre. The club will be training every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7pm until 9pm. This year Fermoy Boxing Club will be training boys and girls from the age of 8 upwards. Membership is now due and new members are always welcome. For further information contact John Bowes on (086) 0637878.
THANK YOU
Fermoy Boxing Club would like to thank everyone who supported our church gate collection on June 27th and 28th. The club raised ˆ995.73.
- Glanworth retain North Cork B football championship in style -
GLORIOUS GLANWORTH
Glanworth 2-13 Kilshannig 1-3
We won this final last year against Mitchelstown after an epic encounter and when we met Mitchelstown in round one this year, many of us in Glanworth felt that Town were going to be title contenders, the same as us and this proved to be the case.
In the first round we had a narrow victory over Town and then in the semi-final we beat Clyda Rovers 1-10 to 0-3 and last Wednesday night in Killavullen we proved far too strong for Kilshannig. We won the toss and played with the wind.
Captain Liam Cotter scored a point after two minutes. A minute later the ball rested nicely in their net. Tommy Fitzgibbon to Ger O’Neill who set John Paul Cotter up had a one on one with their goalie and when you have class and are oozing with confidence no better man than John Paul (Rasher) to tuck the ball under the advancing goalie. Dream start!
Liam Cotter, Alex Sheehan and Ger O’Neill all pointed soon after. We were flying, 1-4 to nil. Kilshannig pointed and Denis Healy lofted a thundering point, yerra fifty yards out and Robert O’Driscoll punched another point. Our midfield of Denis and Liam were out on their own. Absolutely brilliant.
We missed a few goal chances in the first half but Ger O’Neill at centre forward was not beaten once over the hour and Tommy Fitzgibbon was leading the full-back on a merry dance all over the field. Half Time 1-6 to 0-1.
First attack in the second half yielded a Kilshanning goal. Ball kicked in from the wing, a Kilshannig man fielded in the square, turned and goaled. Then we got going. This was the strength in our team.
Tristan Quirke was magnificent at centre-back. Stephen Linehan was like the Colossus of Rhodes, lording it at full-back. Paul Houlihan was majestic in the corner. David Leahy and Emmet Sheehan kept a tight rein on their men and as the scoreline suggests gave nothing away. Dave drove from Dublin for this match, what commitment.
I never saw anyone to clear as much ball as Eamon Condon the last night. He must have been shattered after the match as time and time again he rose to the challenge and played a great game. Great to see him back to full health and fitness.
Liam Cotter and then Tommy Fitzgibbon pointed. Denis Healy with another skyscraper longer than the first. Robert at full-forward causing damage got a point from a very acute angle. Tommy Fitzgibbon scored again. Alex soloed through and cleverly fisted over the bar. Tommy (Boon) Fitzgibbon passed to Gerry whose hard work was rewarded with a goal when he rattled the net.
Alex finished in style and some of the subs nearly got on the score sheet. Aidan Condon, Michael O’Neill, Johnny Magnier, Michael Pat O’Regan and James (Dash) Sheehan. Fergal Fitzgibbon did Trojan work throughout and looked the worse for wear with head heavily bandaged after a blood injury like Ghengus Khan. Ian Welsh was also on the panel.
Player injured Bill Sheehan, Bart O’Keeffe, Patrick O’Keeffe, David Pyne, Sean Og Quinn and Paul Seymour. Gearoid Murphy work commitments. On holidays Johnny O’Driscoll, Liam Brennan and John Blackbourne.
The selectors for the second year in a row were myself, Ted Linehan, Michael Leahy, Seanie Pierce and Michael Healy. This youthful famous five have at least 275 years of experience on this planet and were well pleased with the outcome.
Who were the last Glanworth team to win two North Cork championships one year after another? Answer next week.
The youthful ref, Dave White was fair, well up with the play and did a fine job ably assisted by Waxi and his umpires. Team captain Liam ‘Chops’ Cotter was proud to accept the cup from Tim Ring and Paddy Ryan.
Team and scorers: Martin Jackson, Paul Houlihan, Stephen Linehan, David Leahy, Emmet Sheehan, Tristan Quirke, Eamon Condon, Liam Cotter (capt) 0-3, Denis Healy (0-2), Fergal Fitgibbon, Ger O’Neill (1-1), Robert O’Driscoll (0-2), John Paul Cotter (1-0), Tommy Fitzgibbon (0-2), Alex Sheehan (0-3). Subs: James Sheehan, Michael O’Neill, Johnny Magnier, Aidan Condon, Michael Pat O’Regan, Ian Walsh.
OUR U21 HURLERS LOSE THEIR WAY
Glanworth 0-12 Buttevant 3-9
What a fantastic game of hurling we played in the first half. Our lads seemed well up for it and they scored 12 points. Some of these from excellent free taking of both Martin Roche and Davy Pyne. Emmet Sheehan at full back was playing a stormer, Sean O’Keeffe was marking their ace marksman with aplomb.
Corner back James Sheehan, team captain on the night in the absence of David Leahy, was never troubled. Mr O’Neill got to grips with his man early on. John Blackburn was pulling away first time with good effect and Robert O’Driscoll starred on the wing.
Both midfielders Davy Pyne who hit some amount of ball over the hour was majestic ably assisted by Martin Roche. Our half forwards were also in great form. William Jackson climbed high on occasions to pluck the ball and sent it on its way creating numerous point chances.
Sean Finn was excellent once more and was unlucky with 3 good attempts, their goalie batting the ball out and we should have made more of it. Sean Og Quinn threatened with every ball he got, looking dangerous. Hugh O’Neill was effective once more making the goalie save 2 attempts.
Alex Sheehan was a major treat in the corner and his skill and lightening speed causing havoc. Aidan Condon did Trojan work at full forward and should have been rewarded more. Gerard Murphy when introduced at wing back played very well as did Sean Jackson, Johnnie Magnier and Ml Pat O’Regan also went on.
Goals win matches and they should not have been anywhere near us at half time but we received a sucker punch just before half time.
Score Glanworth 0-12 Buttevant 1-5. The match spilled over ten minutes from the end, but it was brewing with a while. Some dangerous swings were used.
Their goalie got a straight red for punching Sean Og into the face, their wing back also walked as did one of our lads standing up for his younger brother Alex Sheehan looked in trouble with his collarbone, many felt it was broken and we wish him well for a speedy recovery.
The team is very young and only 2 players, wing back Robert O’Driscoll and corner back James Sheehan, are overage next year.
