AMBITIOUS DEVELOPMENT OF VOLUNTARY HOUSING IN KILLAVULLEN

Killavullen Voluntary Housing Association has submitted a planning application to Cork County Council for the development of sheltered houses, a day care centre, dispensary and storage building.

The voluntary housing association, set up as an off-shoot of Killavullen Community Council in 2006, have ambitious plans for the village centre site that was transferred to them by the HSE.

The plan includes provision for 10 sheltered houses, 5 single and 5 two-bed units, a day care centre and a dispensary which will be used by the local doctor.

The voluntary housing aspect will be grant aided to the tune of 95%, while local fundraising is to be organised for the building of the day care centre.

It is anticipated that the project may go to tender in October with a start date planned for early next year. It is hoped that the development will be completed during 2010.

The site, which is located near the local church and the newly opened Killavullen Stores, was donated to the voluntary housing association by the HSE on the understanding that they, in turn, would build a new dispensary as part of the development.

Speaking to The Avondhu this week committee member, Una Nagle said, “We are delighted that the wheels are now in motion for the project to go ahead. The local community has been most supportive of the planned development and we intend to launch a fundraising drive shortly.”

Una explained that three quarters of the housing allocation will be filled from the local authority waiting list with the remaining allocation at the discretion of the Killavullen Voluntary Housing Association.

When built, the houses will be owned by Killavullen Voluntary Housing Association, while the Irish Council for Social Housing will set rents. The housing association will manage the tenancies and residents may avail of all available HSE and other supports. It is hoped that the day care centre will enjoy wide use by the entire community for social activities.

The dispensary will be located in a new purpose-designed building that will be available to residents and the entire community on same basis as the present facility.
