The Avondhu Press Newspaper was established in 1978 and covers the areas of North East Cork, West Waterford, South Limerick and South Tipperary. This successful weekly - published Thursday - boasts a readership in excess of 39,000. The first edition was a modest 4 page edition which has since grown to an average of 80 pages.

OVER THREE THOUSAND PEOPLE ATTEND FOOD FESTIVAL

The weather did little to dampen the atmosphere at the Mitchelstown Food Festival last weekend, when over 3000 people turned out on Sunday to sample some of the great food the region.

WATER SUPPLY TESTED AFTER ILLNESS OUTBREAK

Local authorities have declined to confirm reports that an e.coli outbreak in the water supply in Skeheenarinky has left several people ill. A spokesperson for South Tipperary County Council confirmed that council staff and members of the Health Service Authority (HSE) are taking water samples from the houses.

SWINE FLU CASES CONFIRMED IN BALLYLANDERS

Swine flu is prevalent in The Avondhu region but there is no need to panic according to doctors. It is reported that three young adults from the area have been advised to stay at home and contain their illness after they presented with symptoms of the virus.

INDUSTRIAL ACTION CALLED OFF

Planned industrial action by workers at the 4Home Stores in Mitchelstown, Fermoy and Cashel has been called off. Union members were due to begin picketing all three stores on Wednesday morning in solidarity with colleagues who were made redundant when stores were closed in the three towns.

FRUSTRATION BUILDS OVER RATHCORMAC SCHOOL ISSUE

“Just give us the money. We will have a new school up and running before next September, and it will cost a whole lot less.” This was the direct promise school principal, Margaret Howard, made to the Government at last Monday night’s meeting about the proposed new school for the village of Rathcormac.

CONSULTANT TO LOOK AT CANON’S FIELD PROPOSALS

An independent consultant has been commissioned to look at the proposed and long awaited leisure centre development for the canon’s field in Mitchelstown. Chairman of the leisure centre committee Ben Lynch is confident that the consultant’s report will be ready for presentation to the people of Mitchelstown in the coming weeks.
