MUNSTER TUG OF WAR BOARD

- Ballyhooly take the Mike Hall Memorial Cup -

There was tremendous pulling at the Rathcormac Vintage pull, held on Sunday last in Rathcormac. There was a mighty turnout of teams for this great event the catchweight open in which the late Michael Hallahan Memorial Cup was the silverware to be won.

A total of seven teams competed in this and they were Glenhill, Knights, Ballyhooly, Harps, Donoughmore, Cappoquin, and new team Ballyclough, from outside Mallow.

There was very little between any of the teams in the round robin where Harps ended on top points of 16 without losing a end, Ballyhooly were next on 13 pts, and Donoughmore on 9 pts.

So in the semi-finals it was Harps v Donoughmore and Ballyhooly v Glenhill, and after tough pulls in both contests the two teams that went into the final were Harps v Ballyhooly. Ballyhooly raised their performance here and beat Harps in two straight pulls to take the gold medals and the Michael Hallahan Memorial Cup.

In the inter-pub section three teams competed in which there was great excitement with big support for all teams they were Rathcormac Inn, the Big Tree Bar, and Ballyclough Bar, this was a great contest between the three teams with nothing between any of them. Eventually Ballyclough emerged winners by a narrow margin, and the Big Tree came runners-up.

In the final competition of the day which was the five-a-side senior, five teams competed, they were Knights, Donoughmore, Harps, Ballyhooly, and Glenhill. This was another great contest with nothing between any of the teams, and the two teams to go into the final here were Harps v Donoughmore, Harps ended on level points with Glenhill, so they had to have a pull off.

After a very tough battle Harps took the pull 2-1, so they were well shaken going into the final, Donoughmore being that bit fresher had the edge in the final and went on to win in two straight pulls, so Donoughmore took the gold medals and Harps took the silver. Our thanks to the vintage committee for hosting this great event.

This Sunday sees the last pull of the season being held at the Coolagown Vintage and Fun Day in Coolagown, here there will be a 5-a-side open catchweight competition held, so we are hoping for a good turnout of teams for this the last outdoor pull of the season, starting time will be 2.00pm.

18 Hole Stableford

This weekend we held an 18 hole stableford and the continued high scoring was in evidence yet again.

Lismore’s Paul Quinn (18) shot a superb 44 points which included the luxury of blanking the first hole but a quality back nine of 23 points including a tasty birdie on the 12th helped him claim first prize on a countback.

Another Lismore man James Coleman (19) also shot a superb 44 points with nothing worse than a bogey on his card, a model of consistency.

Third place went to Ballyduff’s Seamie Daly (16) with a fine 41 points, which included two birdies on the back nine on the 11th and 15th holes.

CLUB BARBECUE AND SPONSORS NIGHT

Our annual club barbecue took place on Saturday, 29th August. Following a fun nine holes of golf we were then treated to some gorgeous foods fresh from the barbecue, with thanks to resident chef Kieran Alcock assisted by ‘Young Chef of the Year’ Martin Power with cooking that was second to none. Thanks to club caterer Mrs Bernie Glavin for her delicious table of foods.

The club would like to thank lady captain Anne Bennett, vice captain Declan Glavin, Joan Cahillane and lady vice captain Esther Hornibrook for making the night a tremendous success. Special thanks to Eamon O’Shea, Jim McGrath and Paul McCarthy who all sponsored food on the night.

Mr Tim O’Leary spoke on behalf of the club sponsors, he realised from his time as captain how vital and generous sponsors have been to Lismore Golf Club and he has no doubt this will continue even in difficult times. Finally we all danced the night away to round off a lovely evening.

Thanks to all members who supported our annual barbeque.

CLUB SWEEPSTAKES

Our very successful club sweepstakes ended when Y E Yang saw off Tiger Woods in the USPGA. This guaranteed popular club member Pat Murphy first prize. Declan will face club sponsor, Courier Pat Moore in the final after he overcame the odds to defeat John Whelan with an excellent 3 & 2 win. KILWORTH G.A.A.

- County semi-final for Intermediates -

Kilworth’s intermediate hurlers will take on Blackrock this Saturday afternoon in the semi-final of the 2009 intermediate hurling championship. This is a hugely important game against stiff opposition and a date in the final against Valley Rovers awaits the victors.

This game will be held in Pairc Ui Rinn and throw in is at 3.30pm. We would hope for a good local turnout on the day to give the lads as much support as possible. The club would like to wish all involved the very best of luck.

JAHC SEMI-FINAL

Kilworth 2-15 Ballyclough 3-10
This was a keenly fought contest held in Kildorrery on Sunday afternoon last with a place in this year’s junior A hurling championship final up for grabs. Kilworth were slow out of the blocks and were behind on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-0 inside 15 minutes.

We got back in the contest thanks to a free from distance courtesy of Justin Aherne which went all the way to the net. Justin then picked Will Condon out who tacked on a point to steady the sails. A great defensive clearance from Noel Flynn saw Mark Kenny find Justin who added another point.

Kilworth built on this and when Kevin Whelan sent a low ball to Mark Kenny, he found Damien O’Donoghue in space for another point. Two Ballyclough points extended their advantage but Damien was then upended giving Justin another opportunity which he gladly capitalised on.

John Horgan then cleared his lines finding Justin in space and this narrowed the deficit to just five points, 1-5 to 0-7 at half-time.

Early in the second period, Will Condon reacted quickest to a long Chris Kenny free for his second point of the game. Mark Kenny then pounced on a sloppy clearance from the Ballyclough keeper to send over another.

The momentum was now with Kilworth and this was proved when we goaled on 38 minutes to level the game. A long free from Chris Kenny found Ned O’Brien on the edge of the square and his pass left Damien O’Donoghue in for a fine finish.

Our defence were well on top at this stage with Kieran O’Donoghue organising the full back line well while Sean Beecher provided ample cover in the half back line. Austin O’Hara also impressed in this period.

Brian Whelan and Damien O’Donoghue then earned successive frees and Justin was once again on hand to convert giving us a two point lead. Our opponents pointed but when Paddy Moakley drew a foul up the other end, we once again gained our two point advantage through Aherne.

Great play involving Sean Beecher, Chris Kenny and Ned O’Brien then saw Paddy trade points with the opposition. Brian and Kevin Whelan then linked up nicely on the wing which resulted in Will Condon pointing once more.

The sides exchanged frees before Ned O’Brien sent over a lovely effort with just three minutes remaining. Mark Kenny extended our lead to five points when he drove over from long range and this looked like sealing the result.

However, Ballyclough had other ideas and made for a nervy few moments when the goaled on the stroke of 60 minutes. They looked like snatching victory in added time but a tremendous save from Michael McCormack ensured Kilworth advanced with a deserved win.

Team and scorers: Michael McCormack, Austin O’Hara, Kieran O’Donoghue, Noel Flynn, Chris Kenny, John Horgan, Kevin Whelan, Sean Beecher, Justin Aherne (1-7, 1-5 frees), Brian Whelan, Paddy Moakley (0-1), Damien O’Donoghue (1-1), Will Condon (0-3), Ned O’Brien (0-1) and Mark Kenny (0-2).

SYMPATHY

The club would like to extend sympathy to the McCarthy family, The Square, Kilworth and the Crowley family, Fermoy on their recent bereavements.

CONGRATULATIONS

The club would like to congratulate Adrian Mannix who was part of the Cork intermediate team who claimed victory in the All-Ireland intermediate hurling championship final last Saturday.

Cork overcame Kilkenny in Dungarvan and Adrian played his part on the day contributing a lovely point in what was a fine win. Well done also to Johnny Keane form Liscarroll who managed this side to success.

Last weekend also saw success on the juvenile front with both the U12 and U16 hurling teams claiming North Cork championships. This has been a majorly successful year for the juvenile club thanks to a lot of hard work put in from both young and old and they are reaping the rewards from their efforts.

Congratulations to you all and long may your success continue.

LOTTO

There was no winner of this week’s lotto jackpot of ˆ7,200. Numbers drawn were 5, 8, 9 and 13. ˆ20 lucky dips went to Maurice McNamara, Noel Daly, Anthony Cannon and Robert Abernethy.

Next weeks draw now rolls over to ˆ7350. Your continued support is much appreciated.

FIXTURE

Intermediate hurling championship semi-final Kilworth v Blackrock in Pairc Ui Rinn this Saturday at 3.30pm.

KILWORTH JUVENILE G.A.A.

- Great triumphs -

U12 Hurling Championship North Cork Final Our U12 hurling team played Micheal McCarthaighs in the championship final at Castletownroche on Sunday last. This was a very good game of hurling.

Micheal McCarthaighs were first off the mark with a very nice point. But Kilworth replied with a point, then followed by a good goal. But Micheal McCarthaighs kept putting pressure on the Kilworth backs, who in turn were able to handle the situation, with some great clearances.

Kilworth then upped the anti and got some very good goals and a point. Micheal McCarthaighs had a further two points to leave the half-time score: 4-2 to 0-3. Kilworth’s favour. In the second half Micheal McCarthaighs had a fine goal and a point.

Within three minutes of this half. But the Kilworth centrefielders and all forwards kept the big pressure on Micheal McCarthaighs backs and on doing this they scored a further brace of goals and points. There was no stopping this team. They were just on fire.

Again our goalie Darragh had some fantastic saves, good puck outs. Shane, James, Caroline. Cleared their lines very well, a job well done. Leanne, Sean and Owen won all around them, kept getting stuck in giving no shots to Micheal McCarthaighs. Some fantastic clearances up to the forwards.

Midfield: Simon and Jeremy caught some great ball running at the opponents. No let up. Some great heart. Cormac, Jamie Kenneally, A O’Brien, Jamie Sheehan, Nathan and Kieran, all in mighty scoring form, with some great goals and points. So well done.

So to our subs: Sean, Joseph, Kieran, Luke, Andrew, Ethan, Tiernan and Conor. Well done to you, you played a big part of this team on winning the final. Well as you can see Kilworth had a great win in this final. Winning on a scoreline of Kilworth 8-6 to Micheal McCarthaighs 1-4. So well done to you the team and subs and the best of luck in the county.

Also well done to Tommy Sheehan, Willie Heffernan, Andy McGrath your team mentors, for being so patient in their training and for helping you the team to win this North Cork final. (Also the team say thanks to you)

P.S. After the final whistle Tom Fox chairman of the North Cork Juvenile Board presented our captain Sean Lotty with the cup. Sean then in turn thanked Castletownroche for the pitch looking so well. Many thnks to the referee Willie Magnier. and team mentors.

Then three cheers for Micheal McCarthaighs. Then it was back to the village for parade and some light refreshments. Scorers for Kilworth: A O’Brien 2-2, N Roche 2-2, J Kenneally 1-1, S Walsh 1-1, J Sheehan 1-0, K Heffernan 1-0, C Donnellan 0-2. U16 NORTH CORK HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Our U16 hurling team played Mill Rovers in the U16 hurling championship final played at Ballygiblin on Thursday evening last. This was a very tight game all the way through some very good scores on both sides. This game was played at a very fast pace. This was a very low scoring game.

But some great pulling on the ball all the skills. Kilworth led the game from the start. But Mill Rovers kept in touch throughout but couldn’t get the extra score to draw the game and Kilworth did hold out to win by one goal on a scoreline of Kilworth 1-9 to Mill Rovers 0-9.

Kilworth played well as a team from goalie, to full forward line. So well done to the team and subs. Also well done to Mossy McNamara and his selectors and best of luck in the county. Team scorers: N McNamara 1-5, M Wade 0-2, J Condon 0-1, D Mannix 0-1. Best of luck to the intermediate hurlers on this weekend when they play Blackrock in the county semi-final. We know you can do it.

CLUB MEETING

Club meeting on this Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 in the club house at 9pm.

FERMOY G.A.A. PITCH & PUTT CLUB

- Encouraging turnout for competition -

THE FERMOY MEDICAL HALL COMPETITION

The above competition, which was sponsored, by Brian Whelan and staff at the Fermoy Medical Hall over the past weekend had a large number of players out on the course and this was very encouraging to see.

It should be mentioned that the course, despite all the rain, was in great condition thanks again to John Richards and his stall. We had some very good scores returned in the event, the winner being Anthony Ronan on 49 points, Anthony beat Oliver Doyle on the back nine.

Oliver went on to win first net with second net going to J.J, Quirke with a score of 46pts, J.J. beat Paul Doyle again, on the back nine. The gross was won by the evergreen John Cahill on 46 pts playing off plus two! What a man! In the ladies section, category 0—10 went to Kim Quirke on 41pts. Kim and J.J are keeping the Quirke name well to the fore but then it goes to show. Practice pays off!

The 11-18 grade was won by Tina Didriksonon 39pts. Well done to everyone and thanks for turning up in such great numbers. We were delighted to have Nicola Gormley at the presentation of prizes on Sunday evening. Nicola is one of the friendly staff at the Medical Hall, she presented the prizes and congratulated all the winners.

Club captain, Noel McCarthy thanked the Medical Hall for their sponsorship and thanked Nicola for attending, hopefully they will be able to continue their support in the coming years.

If you haven’t been to the Medical Hall you should give yourself a treat and pay them a visit, it is beautifully laid out and as mentioned previously, Brian and the staff are more than willing to help out with advice whether you have a medical problem or you just need to choose a gift for some special occasion.

THE BARNES JEWELLERS MATCHPLAY COMPETITION

This was another event, which took place over the past two weeks, and, as promised in the last report, we have the results of the finals to hand. In the juvenile boys contest the competitors were Ryan Sexton and Daniel O’Regan.

This game will be long remembered for its brilliance, both players gave their best with Ryan coming out the winner at the thirty-second hole.

Unbelievably, he was fourteen under at this stage and won the contest by 5 & 4. Ryan’s round included not one but two holes in one! Daniel was eleven under at the conclusion and in any normal game, this would be enough to win.

Congrats to both for a wonderful display of pitch and putt. In the girl’s section, first place went to Kelly Flood; she got the better of Laura Flynn after a well fought out game. These two girls will be ones to watch out for in the future, you can write it down!

Now to the ladies, the winner here was Sharon Bowes she defeated Ger O’Keeney 6 & 5. Ger put her nerves to one side and if you had to face Sharon in any competition, let alone a final you would know what I mean, she is ‘almost’ untouchable! Ger gave her a very good contest going all the way to the 30th hole; this was nearly as good as winning, well done to both.

The gents was an even closer game going all the way to the 35th hole! It was won by Anthony Cody by 2 & 1 over Daniel O’Keeffe. Anthony’s win was all the more exciting when you consider that he was down four holes at one stage in the game, what a come back, congrats to everyone for dishing up such fantastic fare.

Noel Barnes attended the presentation on Sunday evening and was more than helpful throughout his stay. The prizes were lovely, beautiful watches for the gents and necklaces for the ladies. The overall for the ladies was a beautiful cut glass bowl, everyone was happy with their win.

Noel said that they were glad to be associated with the club, he said they have been sponsoring this competition for thirty-seven years and hoped they would be able to continue for many years to come. A large crowd attended the presentation and a good night was had by all.

THE SHAWS SCRATCH CUP PRESENTATION

This competition was held three weeks ago but the presentation was held over until tonight. Sharon Roche was present for the occasion, Sharon is a member of staff at Shaws and she was representing the company on this occasion, she didn’t make a speech as she said that it would be impossible to outdo partner, Noel since he became a councillor twice over, he’s had too much practice!

Again we thank Shaws for their continuing support, without this we couldn’t survive as a club, we realise how difficult the retail trade is just now and that makes us all the more appreciative of sponsorship.

The junior scratch cup was won by Dave Daly with the second place going to Tom Egan. The intermediate scratch cup went to Ryan Conway and the runner up was Dinny Fanning, in the senior section, the honours went to Robbie Donovan and second place went to Darren Quirke.

Since Dave Daly and Ryan Conway were absent and Tom Egan had used up all his speeches during his council years, it was left to Robbie Donovan to say a few words! He did this with the humour to which we have become accustomed from Robbie and he finished up by thanking Shaws for the lovely prizes, all in all, a very successful evening.

The officers and members of the club wish Shaws the very best for successful trading into the future, you’ve been a long time in Fermoy and we hope that it will be just as long again God willing. Thanks to everyone for making the evening such a success.

THE JUVENILES

The juvenile captain, Daniel O’Regan had his big day last Thursday when his captain’s prize competition was held, almost thirty young people took part and this is great to see. Without young blood we would have no future!

The overall prize went to Justin McCarthy and first net to Bryan O’Keeffe. Second net was won by James Devonshire with third net going to Dale Dawson. The gross prize was claimed by Ryan Sexton and Ryan went on next evening to win the Barnes match play as already mentioned.

The prize for best boy went to Conor Barry and best girl to Kelly Flood. Best girl beginner was Holly Milward and best girl 14-18 was won by Michelle Flynn. Numerous lucky dips went to the non prize winners and everyone was happy with the results of the evening.

We would like to see another big turnout this Thursday evening when the Juvenile officer, Cathy Doyle will have her prizes on offer. This game will start at 6.15 as the darkness is beginning to win the fight with daylight now that September is here!

Well done to Daniel for a great competition and for all the lovely prizes, he has made a great success of his year, congratulations.

CONGRATULATIONS!

The honour of the club is safe as long as we have players of the calibre of Sharon Bowes and Damien Burke among our numbers. This pair contested the mixed foursomes V/par event in Cunnigar, Dungarvan last Sunday and came away with the gross prize on a score of +16.

The weather conditions were terrible through the game and this makes their achievement all the more worthy of praise. A hearty congratulations to both.

It would be wrong not to include a word of praise for the other club members who played there on that rainy day and they came close to winning also, especially Ger O’Keeney and Declan Freeman who finished +15 but were not rewarded for their efforts, well done to everyone and thanks for holding the club’s name on high.

THE MICHAEL HANLEY COMPETITION

This coming weekend we have the Michael Hanley, news agency competition to look forward to. This will be stroke in format over eighteen holes and it will be a multi-card game.

We are grateful as always to Michael and family for their support. Don’t forget, this week’s lotto is worth a beautiful ˆ20,000.
