PARK UNITED U12S

Park United 8 Ballinhassig 0
A polished performance saw Park advance to the next round of the Local Cup at Brigown Park last Sunday. Always looking dangerous when they played some great football and were too strong for our opponents Ballinhassig.

Their superiority was evident from the start as they had our opponents goal under siege from the kick off. On Park’s first attack Kieran Garrahy, captain on the day, made a great run up the wing followed by a fine shot forcing the keeper to show a safe pair of hands.

Shane O’Neill who showed all through the game why he is on the Cork U12 schoolboys team, collected a ball well cleared out of defence by Donal Shinnick, Shane’s strength and great footwork was too much for Ballinhassig as he passed with ease and class up the wing followed by a great low shot into the box but there was no Park player available to put the ball away.

The deadlock was broken just four minutes into the half when Sarah Connolly cleared her lines well where Jack White won the battle for the ball and he gave a great lay off to Shane who gave the keeper no chance to put Park ahead.

Darren McNamara, Sarah Connolly, James Mullins and Donal Shinnick in defence were seeing very little of the ball as was our keeper Aidan Donegan, as our wingers Jerome Fitzgibbon, Kieran Garrahy and midfield of John O’Sullivan and Shane O’Neill were in total command giving great service to Jack White and Davin Richards.

Johnny and Shane were valuable assets in carrying the ball forward and increasing pressure on our opponents defence. Jack White made a strong run through the middle giving a great through ball into open space Jerome and the keeper came face to face for the ball with the keeper just getting a slight touch to deny Jerome.

With the momentum now behind them the lead was doubled ten minutes into the opening period once again coming from the foot of Shane. This was created with some fine team work by Sarah, Jerome and Davin who won Park a throw, quickly dispatched by Jack to Shane who sent a mesmerising drive into the bottom corner.

Both Jack and Davin had two opportunities to put Park further ahead but the keeper did well with two fine saves to keep his team mates in the game. But there were no signs that Park would slip up as they were in control all over the pitch displaying some fine passes and moves.

Ballinhassig’s first attack at goal came from a free but our Cork U12 centre half James Mullins came out with a dashing run from defence. A good lay off by Kieran Garrahy to Davin Richards saw our top goal scorer unlucky not to score with the keeper saving from the lethal boot of Davin with twenty minutes on the clock Davin found the net with a flick from Jerome.

It was twenty two minutes into the half that our keeper Aidan Donegan got his first touch of the ball. Now three up and with the signs of more goals to come, it was time to give our subs a taste of the action as it was a cold afternoon to be standing on the touch line with Ronan McGrath coming on for Jerome.

Any chance Ballinhassig had of getting back into the game early in the second half were dealt a severe blow with Park scoring two goals in the space of minutes. First Kieran got a well deserved goal coming from a James Mullins free.

The second came from Shane to complete a hat trick, Jack Ryan came on for Davin and got straight into the game passing with ease two defenders followed by a powerful shot that was not far away for what would have been a beauty for the Burncourt lad who is improving with confidence in every game.

But he got on the score sheet minutes later with Ronan combining well with James who delivered a great cross into the box. The ball came off a defender into the path of Jack who drilled the ball into the top of the net for a well taken goal.

It was now all one way traffic and time to give the rest of the bench a run. Aaron O’Grady, Jack Bailey, Gavin Browne, Ricky Ryan and Conor Doyle came on for Davin, Sarah, Mac, Shane, Sullie and Aidan.

Park continued to show no mercy to their opponents as they continued to play with all guns blazing. A foul on Donal earned Park a free. The keeper saved from James, but he failed to hold onto the ball it looked as if the ball was going to cross over the line but the keeper made amends and got down quickly to save.

Kieran got his second of the day ten minutes from time with some good lay offs from Aaron O’Grady, Jack Bailey and Ronan Ricky Ryan, but a halt to a Ballinhassig attack clearing a good ball to Jack Ryan who earned a Park corner.

Kieran, who was very impressive all through the game playing a captain’s part, gave a pin point cross from the wing deep into the box. Gavin Browne, who had made a dashing run looked as if he was about to get his name on the scoresheet, but just as he was about to shoot he slipped.

With just seconds to go to the full time whistle Park scored when Jack Bailey took a quick free to James Mullins and from a very difficult angle near the touch line James hit a rasper with the ball nesting in the top of the net, giving the keeper no chance for goal of the game.

This was a very impressive Park performance but it must be stated that Ballinhassig play in a lower division. They had played four games with three wins and had scored 16 goals with only 7 against, so Park went into the game not taking anything for granted with full respect for our opponents who even well beaten all over the pitch they did their best from the first to the final whistle and there was not one dangerous or bad tackle during the whole game.

So we have now got over the first hurdle and into round two. This will be played on Saturday or Sunday, February 27/28. As yet our opponents are not known.

Our next league game is away to Everton on Saturday, February 13th. Team v Ballinhassig: Aidan Donegan, Sarah Connolly, Darren McNamara, James Mullins, Donal Shinnick, Kieran Garrahy (cpt), Jerome Fitzgibbon, Shane O’Neill, John O’Sullivan, Jack White, Davin Richards. Subs all used Conor Doyle, Aaron O’Grady, Jack Bailey, Ricky Ryan, Jack Ryan, Ronan McGrath, Gavin Browne.

KILWORTH SQUASH CLUB

- Division 2 giant killers -

DIVISION 2

As had been coming for a while, Kilworth A finally had a bit of luck in fielding a near full strength side last night and on a score line of by 14 to 7 comfortably eased past competition leaders Highfield A, who are running away with this competition.

Trevor Slattery in only his 2nd league appearance put in a fantastic showing against the highly regarded Ricky Chisholm rapidly winning the first 2 games. Slowly Chisholm got the pace of the colder court and gradually upped his game. Trevor had match ball in the 3rd and then the 4th but couldn’t quite nail it.

9 all in the 5th and unfortunately again it was Chisholm who just had enough in the tank. A very good display by Trevor nonetheless.

Garth Littlejohn got off to a good start against fellow club member Dave Ronayne winning the first 2 in a tough battle. The 3rd was a real ding dong affair going to 9 all but Garth just had enough to close it out in 3.

Brian Carey was at 4 and had a tough match against a quality opponent. Although asleep in game one, Brian woke up and gave the next two a good shake. At 8 all in game 2 Brian had a chance to claim a point but couldn’t quite get over the line. He showed good speed at times but just made the odd unforced error at crucial moments.

With Aidan Kenny getting a walkover, Pat Hanley had the job of closing out the match and duly obliged in 4 games. Unfortunately his was the 8th game on court that day and the walls were very wet making shot making very difficult.

Genuine boasts were ending in the middle of court and the wet ball shooting along the floor from drives. Nevertheless Pat did enough to get the lads home and continue his fine record.

Next week we have Highfield B and a 20 pointer will make it interesting in our bid for 2nd place in the league.

DIVISION 4

The front running division 4 team had two resounding wins last week. Kilbrin and UCC were the victims of a 20-1 and 20-0 pounding respectively. These lads are determined to retain the trophy the club won last year and they are doing a fine job of going about it. This week they will face Midleton C at home, good luck lads.

KILDORRERY G.A.A.

- Enjoyable joint social -

By the passing last Thursday morning/ in his 96th year, of John Leo Fitzgerald, Farahy, the club has lost one of its most respected and ardent supporters and indeed, a vice-president of the club.

Reputed to have been a fearless and proficient hurler in his day, Leo, as he was affectionately known, played his last game in 1949, the year that the Kildorrery club was founded.

In that year, he won his second North Cork championship medal with the Farahy team coming back to back with that won by the same team the previous year.

While he never played for this club, he was always an ardent supporter and passed on his love of Gaelic games to his family. His sons John, Denis, Pat and the late Michael all wore the club jersey right through from underage level.

In a fitting tribute to the oldest member of the community of the parish, his coffin draped in the club colours, was given a guard of honour, as family members shouldered it through the grounds of the parish church on Friday night and at the funeral to Farahy Cemetery on Saturday afternoon.

Last Monday night’s weekly meeting was adjourned as a mark of respect. To his wife Ina, sons, John, Denis and Pat; daughters Breid and Goretti, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren and relatives, sincere sympathy is extended.

Out of Tom Creedon Cup Forced to line out without Shane Fitzgerald and Dave White of the team, which defeated St. Michaels the previous weekend, our intermediate footballers lost 1-5 to 1-8 to a fresher and sharper Nemo Rangers side at the home venue, last Sunday afternoon.

Both sides were guilty of poor shooting in this first half and at the break the visitors led 0-4 to 0-2. Kildorrery’s points coming from John Howard and a Stevie Coughlan free in the 29 minute.

Nemo continued where they left off, after the interval, extending their lead to four points by the 38th minute. John McCarthy cut the deficit to a single point, with a great goal two minutes later. However, this was quickly negatived by a like score from Nemo just before the end of the third quarter.

Andrew O’Brien did pull back a point for Kildorrery, only to see the winners forge ahead again, with two points. But, it was Kildorrery who got the last two scores of the game from Eamonn O’Connor and Andrew O’Brien (free) Team and scorers. Dave Roche, Sean Kelly, Tom Paul Murphy, John Cremin, Jerry McCarthy, Michael Walsh, Richie McEniry; Andrew O’Brien (0-2), Liam O’Keeffe, John Howard (0-1), Eamonn O’Connor (0-1), Liam Kelly, John McCarthy (1-0), Stevie Coughlan (0-1), David Kelly. Subs. David Aherne for Jerry McCarthy (inj.). Pio O’Regan for L. Kelly.

Before the game, a minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect to the late Leo Fitzgerald.

EMIGRATED

The club has recently lost four of its dual players through emigration. Peter O’Brien and Tom Monaghan are in Australia. Paudie Hanley and Ciaran O’Connor headed for New Zealand. While their loss to the Club is immense, we wish them well. Minor League The minor football league gets under way this weekend. The draws were to have been made at last Wednesday night’s North Cork Board meeting.

GOING TO THE DOGS

Congratulations this week to Club President/Tommy Dunne who was the winner of a night for two at Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium, in the Cork G.A.A. clubs’ draw/ last Friday night.

LOTTO

There was no winner of the ˆ1,800 jackpot when the Club’s fortnightly lotto draw took place at Sheahan’s Hilltop lounge, last Sunday night. The numbers drawn were: 07,09/13,23. Three lucky dip winners of ˆ50 each were: 1. Pat Fenton, Farahy. 2. Patricia Roche, Farahy Road. 3. Margaret Fenton, Farahy. The next draw will be held at Ollie’s Bar on Saturday February 13th, when the jackpot will be ˆ2,000.

SOCIAL

The annual social, held this year, jointly, with the Camogie and Ladies’ Football clubs, last Saturday night, at Mitchelstown Golf Club was a most enjoyable event.

Guests of honour on the night were Very Rev. Canon Twomey P.P. and North Cork Board Chairman, Christy Morrissey and his wife. Club cathaoirleach Barry O’Connor presided- North Cork Junior B hurling championship medals were presented to the members of that victorious team by Christy Morrissey.

Chairperson of the Ladies’ Football Club, Eileen Murphy, and president Charles Hanley presented the medals to members of their team who won county junior football championship and league in 2009.

Presentations for long service to the club, were made to William Duggan, Treasurer and Nicholas Hickey, PRO by Barry O’Connor and Tommy Dunne, president, respectively.

FERMOY BOXING CLUB

- Good results -

CORK V DUBLIN
Last Saturday night week at The Riverside Hotel, in Macroom, Cork squared up to Dublin in an inter county clash. Stepping into the ring for Fermoy Boxing Club and making his debut was 13 year old Paul Connolly Murphy.

Paul was squaring up to Aidan Kelly of Crumlin Boxing Club in the 44kg weight division. The sound of the first bell saw Adrian come out with all guns blazing landing head, body head combinations which Paul had difficulty dealing with. As the round went on Paul started to settle into the fight and round 1 ended with the score 3 points to 1 point to Aidan.

Round 2 started with Paul throwing powerful well timed 1-2 combinations which put Aidan on the back foot. Paul used the ring well cutting off his opponent and gave Aidan little chance to score. Paul by now was taking control of the fight and the round ended with the score 6 points to 3 points to Paul.

Third round saw Aidan launch an all out attack on Paul but Paul’s quick movement and counterpunching was causing Aidan all sorts of problems. After 3 rounds of first class boxing Paul ran out the winner by a scoreline of 10 points to 4 points.

CORK LEAGUES

Last Thursday night Fermoy Boxing Club had 2 boxers taking to the ring in the Cork leagues. First into the ring was 11 year old new kid on the block Shane Hegarty. Shane squared up to Stephen Daly of St Colmans Boxing Club.

With the sound of the first bell these 2 young lads went toe to toe in the centre of the ring trading punch for punch. After a fast paced first round the score was 2 points each.

Round 2 started with Shane launching an all out attack on Stephen catching him with strong jabs back up with accurate right crosses. Shane kept the pressure up for the whole round and won round 2 by a scoreline of 9 points to 4.

Round 3 saw Shane continue where he left off in round 2 throwing punch after punch and keeping Stephen’s defence working overtime. Shane never backed off until the final bell and ran out the winner by 12 points to 6. Second into the ring was Paul Connolly Murphy who was squaring up to Daniel McCarthy of the Glen Boxing Club.

The sound of the first bell saw these two lads launch straight into each other landing hard combinations on each other. Daniel found it hard to land accurate punches as Paul’s lightning quick movement was causing him all sorts of problems.

After a hard fought first round the score was 2 points to nil to Paul. Round 2 started with Daniel finding his range catching Paul with well timed combinations but midway through the round Paul started replying with accurate combinations of his own. After a cracker of a second round the score was 3 points to 1 point to Paul.

With the score being tight Paul and Daniel came storming out for the last round going toe to toe in the centre of the ring. Midway through the round Paul upped the tempo and ran out the winner on a scoreline of 7 points to 5.

GALBALLY R.F.C.

- Wins for Galbally -

Galbally beat Thomond 3-0 in the 2nd round of the Munster Junior Cup in Galbally last Sunday. Galbally will now play Kilfeakle in the next round in Galbally on Sunday, February 14th at 2.30. Karl Bourke got the game’s only score from a penalty midway through the 1st half.

Galbally forwards were excellent on the day and made a lot of ground from mauls at the back of rucks. In the dying stages of the game outhalf Liam Casey intercepted a Thomond pass and was just held up short of the Thomond line.

Thomond then ran the ball from inside their own 22 and Galbally were grateful to Niall McNamara and Willie Casey for making important tackles in the last play of the game.
Galbally lined out as follows: Niall McNamara, Karl Bourke, Tony Henebry, Jim Stapleton, Eoin Bourke, Liam Casey, Philip Moore, Timmy Casey, Ian Ryan, Martin Mulrey, Willie Casey, Paddy O’Brien, Brendan Childes, Jack Hedigan and Steven Bourke (capt). Subs used: James Taylor and George Costello.

Fethard then took the lead from an excellent penalty near the touchline midway through the 2nd half. Then with about 5 minutes remaining, after good work from Kevin Denihan out on the wing, Richard Stapleton passed to full back Frank Cussen who collected the ball at great speed and scored a try under the posts.

Kevin Hickey added the conversion to leave the final score 12-6.
