- Poor turnout for AGM -
Last Friday evening, 30th January, the Galbally Square Golf Society held their AGM in O’Connell’s Bar, Galbally, to a very disappointing turnout.
The meeting was opened by Brian Chaplin who welcomed those who attended and accepted apologies from others. He then went on to say that, as our present chairman had left the area and was no longer in contact with anyone, we should first elect a new chairman/president.
Charlie McCarthy was proposed and seconded and he agreed to take the position for the next two years. The outgoing captain, Mike Fitzgerald, then took the floor and thanked everyone for making his year a success. He also congratulated the officers for their running of the society.
The next item was the treasurer’s report that was given by Brian Chaplin who presented an ‘account sheet’ to everyone showing the income and expenditure incurred during the year. He then went on to thank his fellow officers and particularly the members for turning up on time to outings and for having the correct money thereby making his duty easier.
This was followed by the secretary’s report presented by Denis Ryan. Denis gave a full account of the past year’s outings and the match play competition giving a report on each outing together with the results. He also thanked his fellow officers and said that he was looking forward to the coming year.
Declan Wallace then stood up to present the handicap secretary’s report. Everyone said that they were happy with the way the handicaps are dealt with for society outings but it was agreed that in the match play competition three-quarters of the handicap difference be used in future instead of the full difference.
The meeting then went on to the election of officers. The captain for 2009 is Marcus Browne, vice-captain Martin Dineen, secretary Denis Ryan, treasurer Brian Chaplin and handicap secretary Declan Wallace.
The incoming captain, Marcus Browne, then thanked everyone for the honour that they had bestowed on him and promised that he would do his utmost in keeping the society to the high standard that it had obtained.
The secretary, Denis Ryan, took the floor again to announce the fixtures for the coming year which are Dromoland Golf Club on Saturday, 21st March, Dundrum Golf & Country Club on Saturday, 18th April, Cahir Golf Club on Saturday, 4th July, Mitchelstown Golf Club on Saturday, 29th August, and the captain’s prize to be held at Ballykisteen Golf Club on Saturday, 26th September.
It was proposed that a ‘president’s cup’ be established and played for between the April and July outings. This was agreed and Denis said that he would find a suitable venue. Denis went on to say that, as last year’s golfing trip to Portugal was such a success, he has organised another trip for the weekend 16th to 19th October.
Denis also mentioned the society website that is full of information about all the forthcoming outings, results of past outings, and copies of press releases. It is hoped that soon we can upload photographs onto the pages for added interest. He was pleased to say that during the past year the site had over 1,500 hits. The website can be accessed on www.galballygolf.com
Under ‘any other business’ it was suggested and passed that we would no longer have a ‘visitors’ prize. In future visitors and guests to outings will play in the main competition but will not be eligible for the first prize.
With the meeting coming to an end a draw took place for free membership amongst the members who attended, the winner being Michael Casey.
- Spring league falls foul of the bad weather yet again -
DERMOT O’LEART AGRI SPRING LEAGUE 1ST ROUND
Our annual spring league kindly sponsored by Dermot O’Leary Agri once again fell victim to the weather with the course closed on Saturday. Round two has been extended for another week but competitors are advised that it must finish by Sunday next, 8th February.
In very difficult playing conditions Pat Moore (18) found it to his liking shooting a superb 31 points. The well known courier and club sponsor had no less than eight fours on the card. Second place went to our hon club secretary Willie Henry (13) who also liked it testing underfoot as he also shot 31 points which included two excellent birdies at the 4th and the 11th.
In third was Richard Ormonde Junior (8) who signed for a level par round of 29 points. An excellent approach shot into a stiff wind at the 7th set him up for the easiest of birdies in an almost flawless round.

We offer our condolences to our 1998 lady captain Mrs Bernie Burke and family on the untimely passing of her sister Mrs Kathleen Keane, Co Wexford.

But in the doubles Colm and his partner from Mallow P Buckley went on to win the All Ireland final at intermediate and took home the gold medal in the singles. Colm had to give best to Gavin Buggy from Wexford in the county scene.

- Colaiste capture another county basketball title -
Colaiste an Chraoibhin, Fermoy returned to the winners’ rostrum for the second time in 8 days, when the U 16 boy’s team put in an inspiring all round performance to capture another county basketball title. The final was held in Parochial Hall, and their opponents on the day were Beara Community College, Castletownbere, 34-30, and Scoil Mhuire, Beal Atha ‘n Ghaortaidh, 36-13.
Colaiste an Chraoibhin 34 Beara Community College 30
In a hugely entertaining game, there was very little to choose between the sides. Colaiste were the dominant team early on. They opened the scoring, but Beara responded with a fine 3 pointer.
It was basket for basket for the remainder of the quarter, but Colaiste had the slight edge, and led by 4 points, 9-5, at the end of the 8 minutes. Both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes of the second quarter, before Colaiste stepped up a gear and took hold of the game. Colaiste were superb.
Rory Sexton and James Flynn were doing an amount of damage, as they combined well in the fast breaks, to score 8 points between them. Colum McCarthy and Daniel Hayes were fantastic in defence, as they grabbed rebound after rebound, and their quick passing led to some further scores for Colaiste.
Colaiste were well in control, as they held their opponents scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, to lead 21-9 at the interval. Colaiste continued to dominate the opening minutes of the third quarter, and went 15 points clear of their opponents.
This was the turning point for Beara. Beara were soon cutting into the lead, and they went on to score 9 consecutive points as Fermoy struggled to come to grips with their attack. There was just 6 points, 24-18, separating the teams, as they entered the final quarter. It was still all to play for in the final quarter.
Midway through the quarter, Beara led for the first time during the game. This was the wake up call for Fermoy. Colaiste had to pull out all the stops. They began to settle back into the game, and some excellent passing led to some scores.
With 60 seconds left on the clock, the game could have gone either way. Colaiste stood tall and chased everything while covering every inch of the boards. They managed to win back possession twice at the crucial stage, and up stepped Evan Harris O’Sullivan, who calmly slotted home 4 points to finally kill off the game.
The final score was 34-30, a great win for Colaiste. Team and scorers: Padraig Clancy, Rory Sexton (10), James Flynn (6), Daniel Hayes (6), Colum McCarthy (6), Nicholas Critch, Oliver Critch, Evan Harris O’Sullivan (6), Ricardo Varanda, Zoltan Szachari, Stephen Sinclair, Kenneth Dawson, Brian Sibiya, David Bracken.
Colaiste an Chraoibhin 36 Scoil Mhuire 13
Next up were the winners of last year’s final, Scoil Mhuire, Baile Atha ‘n Ghaoraidh. Colaiste an Chraoibhin were their opponents last year and had to be content with runners-up prize. But this year, there was no mistaking Colaiste’s intentions. They had waited twelve months for this! Colaiste took control of the game from the tip off.
They applied all the pressure, and the hard work paid off. Colaiste were on song with a series of baskets to open a 6 point lead, 8-2, at the end of the quarter. Fermoy continued to run the court in the second quarter. The Fermoy defence was solid, leaving Scoil Mhuire with little chance of scoring.
Some deadly shooting from Rory Sexton, stretched Colaiste’s lead to 11 points, 16-11, at the interval. Scoil Mhuire fought back in the third quarter. Daniel Hayes and Padraig Clancy were working hard in defence, and were a constant threat in attack.
It was basket for basket for the entire quarter, but Colaiste held their nerve and led by 11 points going into the final quarter. Fermoy increased the tempo in the final quarter.
It was all 1 way traffic, with Colaiste pushing further ahead. Colaiste held their opponents scoreless for the entire quarter. Colum McCarthy was fantastic in defence, as he rebounded well and was a great support to his team mates, and up front he was putting his name on the scoresheet.
Colaiste won on a 36-13 scoreline, to claim the silverware and become county champions. Team and scorers: Padraig Clancy (2), Rory Sexton (10), James Flynn (2), Daniel Hayes (8), Colum McCarthy (10), Nicholas Critch, Oliver Critch, Evan Harris O’Sullivan (2), Ricardo Varanda (2), Zoltan Szachari, Stephen Sinclair, Kenneth Dawson, Brian Sibiya, David Bracken.
- U12s keep good run going in tough conditions -
Ballylanders 8 Cappamore 0
On Saturday, 30th January Ballylanders kept up their chase and challenge for every point and tackle they could win on the field. As they are trying to achieve league success, it is vital to play well and put in an effort every time they take to the field.
This team are a team that can win games and must continue their season to the very end just as they have been playing it so far. Unfortunately I do not have the scorers’ names, but do have the times of the goals scored and in each half Ballylanders dominated.
The first goal came on one minute and thirty seconds after a fine passing move. (1-0) The second came in the ninth minute, with a break away a slotted finish, after Cappamore seemed to start to make a fight of it. (2-0)
The third goal in the twenty third minute, with Bally on the break, the shot was lifted over the keeper from outside the box and into the top corner for a classy finish. (3-0)
Ballylanders had missed a hat full of chance, where passing into the net would have done, instead powerful shots were tried, it was lucky they could afford these misses.
As both teams tired, the goals got less frequent and there was another just before the break, on twenty ninth minute, as the Bally manager and coaches rallied their team it paid of with quicker passing and another break saw another goal, not unlike the break away goals before them. (4-0).
The second half started with the same pattern as before with Bally scoring in the thirty second (5-0), the thirty sixth minute (6-0) and the was the pick of the bunch, the headed goal from a corner. In the fiftieth-minute Bally made added another. (7-0).
The scoring still wasn’t over in this match after some good defending, tackling and all-round play through out the game by the home side, late on fifty fourth minute Bally made it eight. (8-0).
This team need to carry on fighting for every ball and playing the way they know how, this will bring them victories.

- Charlie Macs division 4 team win third in a row -
Charlie Mac’s Division 4 Munster Squash League Team On Thursday, 29th Jan our division 4 team took on Kilbrin at home. On the night every game more or less went to the wire and in the end a hard fought win by the Kilworth lads ensued.
Marc Gallagher got the night off to a flyer with a very tough win by 3-2. Brian Carey took the spoils in his game by a margin of 3-1. This left Aidan Kenny with the chance to win the match on the night. In a stunning encounter Aidan was pipped to the line by a very strong Kilbrin player, again 3-2 was the score.
Conor Cooney went in at number 2 on the team and put the seal on a great night for the home team by winning his match 3-1. Trevor Slattery finished the night with a 3-1 win also. That meant the team had taken almost maximum points from both opening games. On Tues., 3rd Feb we made our first trip away from home.
The Orchard was the venue and the same five players took part. Once again we had a resounding victory. Conor, Trevor, Aidan and Marc all won 3-0, with Brian taking his match 3-1. At this early stage of the competition the Kilworth team are very happy with the start they have made.
There are some very tough outings coming up however, starting with Silversprings at home this Thursday, 5th Feb. All are welcome to come along as your support is much appreciated by the lads.
