• Not too many years ago the farm advisory service were giving talks around the country about the ideal ‘turning out’ date for cattle. Farmers were advised that early March should be the targeted date if at all possible. Now, however, the weather has put a bit of a dent on those lofty ideals as many farmers, facing a real fodder crisis, suffer the affects of 8 month winters. In Rodger O’Farrell’s picture this week, JJ Sheehy of Ballyporeen has taken some dry stock off the land and started feeding round bale silage. JJ said that the climate is so bad outside that the cattle are thriving better in the sheds.
