FERMOY G.A.A. PITCH & PUTT CLUB

- Great turnout at open week -

THE OPEN WEEK

The games got underway with a stableford event, this ran through Tuesday also and over 350 players took part. This was a great turnout despite gloomy forecasts for the week. The first man to appear on Monday at 8.45am was Declan O’Shea from the Claycastle club in Youghal, Declan played eleven games in this competition over the two days!

Eventual winners in the ladies section were: Overall Sonia Quirke with a score of 83 points. The 0-10 grade went to Mary Geary on 82 points and the 0-10 gross to Kim Quirke on 72. The 11-18 nett was won by Norma Buckley and the 11-18 gross by Caroline O’Flaherty on 65 points. The gents overall was a very close affair with Damien Burke and Michael Cahill coming in with the same score, 94 points, Damien took the honours on the back nine and Mick claimed the gents senior nett. The senior gross went to J.J. O’Connor on 88 points. Intermediate nett was won by Brendan Cronin with 93 points and inter gross by Noel Ring on 83 points. The junior nett went to Paddy Power with 87 points and the junior gross to Anthony Cody on 68.

We had a foursomes competition on Wednesday and again we had a photo finish, the overall went to Richie Hanley and Brendan Cronin on 41 nett and the same score was returned by the pair who took second nett, Sonia Quirke and Sean Kearney.

Gents nett went to Darren Duffy and Daniel Quirke with 43 nett, the ladies nett was won by Donna Kearney and Sonia Quirke on 47 nett. The mixed nett went to Jim Doyle and Cathy Doyle on 44. The best gross was taken by Damien Burke and Darren Quirke with a score of 43.

The real fun began on Thursday when the competition was a three ball scramble, The overall nett was won by three junior players who returned an incredible score of 29.5 nett!

They were Hugh O’Sullivan from the Deerpark club in Killarney, Liam Farrell and John Cooney from Kilshannig. Second nett went to Declan O’Shea from Claycastle in Youghal, Dave Cowell and Mag Rea from Fermoy, their score was 30.66 nett.

Claycastle were well represented in the ladies section with Joan Hyde, Rita Ryall and Maureen Broderick coming in with 33.5 nett. Best gross was snatched by the Bruff club in the persons of Billy Farrell, Patsy Farrell and Liam Donovan, they returned a 36, great shooting all round, well done.

Friday was the day when the weather got really nasty, we had no option but to close the course in the afternoon when water lodging on the greens made play impossible. At that stage only forty-four cards had been played, we allowed the results to stand out of respect for the people who had battled the elements, below are the results,… overall J.J. O’Connor and Sean Kearney, second nett were Tom Daly and Donna Kearney.

The gents nett went to Anthony McGrath and Robbie Donovan and the ladies nett was won by Theresa O’Keeffe and Kim Quirke. The mixed nett prize was won by J.J. O’Connor and Angela O’Connor. On a score of 47, the best gross went to Jonathan Collins and John Dennis.

The big competition took place on Saturday and Sunday, this was a scotch foursome over 36 holes and the contest was very animated!

In the gents section the overall went to Colum O’Connor on 82 nett, overall gross to Darren Quirke on 87. Senior 1st nett was won by Declan O’Shea from Claycastle and inter 1st nett by Noel Hanrahan on 83 net, Junior 1st nett went to Jimmy Noonan on 88 nett.

BALLYPOREEN HANDBALL AND RACQUETBALL CLUB

- Golden masters double!-

The clubs golden masters Pat Ryan and Billy McCarthy recorded a double in the Munster 60/30 golden masters (A) championships recently.

Pat had a good win in the singles where he overcame D O’Connor (Limerick) in the semi-final and then in the Munster final he had an easy win over J Dillon (Limerick) in two straight games. Pat teamed up with Billy McCarthy in the golden masters (A) doubles and they are the current All-Ireland champions in this grade.

In the Munster championship they had two comfortable wins. In the semi-final they easily beat D O’Brien and S Daly of Cork. In the Munster final they comfortably beat D O’Connor and J Dillon (Limerick).

They now move onto an All Ireland semi-final where they meet J Rossiter and N Clancy (Carlow). This should be a great match with two very even pairs but hopes are high for a Munster win.

MIKE O'BRIEN IN ALL-IRELAND ACTION

The club’s other representative in All-Ireland action, Mike O’Brien will team up with Paul Maher (Clonmel) in the All-Ireland 60/30 semi-final of the masters (B) doubles this Sunday, August 9 in Wexford town at 2pm where they take on Wexford in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Mike and Paul had a good win in the Munster final where they beat Cork but the Tipperary lads will have to be at their best form against a strong Wexford pair. Best of luck to all our lads this weekend!

RYAN LOOSES SEMI-FINAL

One of the club’s top players, Pat Ryan turned in a good performance in the All-Ireland 60/30 semi-final of the Golden masters (A) singles before losing out to Johnny Brennan, Kilkenny.

Before a good sized crowd in Ballyporeen last Friday night, Pat put up a brave show in an excellent semi-final clash before losing 21-14, 13-21, 21-9. Pat started well going into an early lead, but Brennan came back well to take control of the 1st game to win 21-14.

Pat made a major effort in the 2nd game and took full control, with good serving and power play to win the 2nd game 21-13.

But in the 3rd game, Brennan gained the upper hand to win comfortable 21-9. Tough luck Pat after a great show, hopes will be light going into the doubles.

JUVENILES DO WELL

Our 60/30 juveniles have been doing well in the county 60/30 juvenile championship recently. In the U12 singles – Tiernan O’Brien lost out to J Moroney (Carrick-on-Suir in two very well contested games. In the U12 doubles – John Ryan and Mikey Maher did well with a good win over Cashel in the South final and then beat Lahorna in the County final in Thurles. Then they played Kerry in the Munster quarter-final and easily overcame them.

They now play Clare this weekend in the semi final. In the 14 singles – Jason Cahill turned in a great performance before just losing out to S Moroney (Carrick-on-Suir) in the South final. In the U16 singles – Anthony Crotty won the county title with a good win over Ballina in the final in Thurles. Anthony now meets Clare this coming weekend in the Munster semi-final. Well done to all our young handballers.

60/30 REOPENED

The 60/30 court has now re-opened after further work on the lighting. The court is now in top order with many of our 60/30 players in action there most nights of the week. The club wish to thank all the lads who helped with this work on the lighting and scaffold.

40/20 COUNT

The 40/20 court is in top order after a full makeover, repairs to ceiling, painting of walls and floor and painting of gallery. Also both ladies and men’s dressing rooms have been upgraded to top order. So both courts are now in top class condition. So now for the coming autumn season, we would encourage all our local handballers and racquetballers to use both courts. Come along and enjoy this great local amenity!

WELL DONE FLY

Congrats to Anthony Crotty on winning the County U16 handball final, Anthony won in two straight games a very talented young lad who puts in great effort in training.

All-Ireland Golden Masters Semi-Final Pat Ryan – Billy McCarthy, Ballyporeen v John Rossiter – Martin Clancy, Carlow. This game to be played in Garryhill on Saturday, August 8th. Best of luck lads.

Hard luck on Pat Ryan on losing All-Ireland Golden A Singles semi final. Pat lost in two straight games to Johnny Brennan of Kilkenny. U12 doubles pairing of John Ryan and Mikey Maher who are already county champions and also beat Kerry in the first round of the Munster, they are now in the Munster final.

LISMORE GOLF CLUB

- Ten open days before the grand final of Kelleher’s -

CAPPOQUIN SUPERVALUE OPEN QUALIFIER

Kelleher’s Cappoquin Super Value Open Qualifier Our very popular Kelleher’s Cappoquin SuperValu open qualifier has only ten open days before the grand final on Saturday, 19th September.

This week saw popular committee members vice captain Declan Glavin and 1999 president/greens chairman Michael O’Regan both winning on Thursday and Monday respectively.

Club Mixed Foursomes sponsored by Goldcrop Round 1 of the club mixed foursomes kindly sponsored by Goldcrop has been completed.

Sheila O’Leary and Dave Lonergan defeated Gerty Murphy and Philip Walton in a tight game on the 17th. Nora O’Sullivan and 2008 president Pat Bennett gained revenge in a value for money match winning on the 22nd hole over Marie Condon and mixed manager John McGrath.

One down playing the last Nora sank a brilliant 15 foot birdie putt to send the match to extra holes and then sank a tricky downhill 10 footer to win the match competition secretary Mag Morrissey and 2003 captain Paddy O’Leary lived up to their tag as pre tournament favourites with a solid victory over 2008 captain Tricia Bolger McCarthy and Liam Buckley.

2006 champions Joan Cahillane and Colm Burke bowed out on the 20th hole after a ding dong battle with Mary Tom Joe Murphy and her son Waterford hurling star Eoin. The husband and wife pair of Mary and Seamus Beecher gelled well to see off lady vice captain Esther Hornibrook and 2007 Captain Tom O’Donovan on the 16th.

2007 champions Brenda Barry and Paul McCarthy also got their marching orders with the experienced pair of Anna Murphy and Nicholas Walsh playing good golf when it mattered to win on 17th.

In a night of atrocious weather ladies PRO Jo Tobin and Anthony O’Rourke coped best with the conditions defeating Siobhan Moroney and president James Bennett on the 17th.

The husband and wife pair of Sheena and PJ Coughlan also advanced to the next round with our captain Maurice Cahillane was unable to play due to illness and all club members wish our most active Captain a speedy recovery.

Members take note that the final date for the completion of the next round is the 17th of August. The competitions committee has been instructed by captains Anne Bennett and Maurice Cahillane that there are to be no extensions, so get playing.

GOLFER OF THE YEAR

After 6 rounds of our Golfer of the Year competition the leaderboard could not be tighter. Spring league sponsor Ted O’Leary has been holding pole position all year but some serious golfers are bearing down on him. One point back is 2009 captain’s prize winner Frank Roche.

Popular handicap secretary Paul McCarthy is only two points back and is confident of a good autumn run after a recent round of golf with a retired Cork golf professional. Others in striking distance are Lismore’s Brian Shanahan, vice captain’s prize winner Denis Galvin and Cappoquin’s Martin Power.

Four events remain to decide the destiny of the 2009 Golfer of the Year and we wish all the best of luck.

TIMESHEETS

It has been brought to the attention of our captain that some members are treating the weekend timesheets with complete disrespect.

Members take note on the weekend morning you are playing, moving forward and backwards on a timesheet is not allowed. Several members have been left without playing partners and were forced to rely on other groups, who were on time in their allotted slot, to break up. This conduct is completely unacceptable. It has also been highlighted to the captain that numerous groups are not starting at their allotted time; this then is causing significant backlogs on the turn.

Finally any member, who has a slot booked and is unable to play, must cross their name off the timesheet or contact a committee member to do so. The captain plans to oversee the timesheet over the next number of weeks to eliminate this problem.

Third place went to another Conna man Barry Rumley (6) 2 up, continuing his rich vein of form following on from his big part for the family team in the Club Classic win last weekend.

MITCHELSTOWN GOLF CLUB

- July 25th was Paddy’s day -

No need to get alarmed folks. The date of our national saint’s day hasn’t been moved or anything like that by some stroke of some ‘divine authority’. Jerry O’Riordan did however present his captain’s prize on July 24 and 25. The captain’s prize is always the highlight of the men’s club’s golfing calendar.

Once again it proved to be exactly that this year. Joined by family and friends, our captain experienced two days of superb golf, which culminated in a 9 hole play-off to decide the eventual winner. The weather was excellent for most of the occasion.

Nothing however was going to dampen this occasion for anyone. Two days of superb golf over a testing but fair course is just part of the story of this year’s captain’s prize competition. In excess of 230 members played in the event. The popularity of our captain was there to see over the two day event and was also evident from the size of the attendance at the presentation of prizes.

The event got underway on Friday, July 24 and by the end of the first day’s play the clubhouse lead was held by Michael McGrath. The charismatic left hander produced a superb round to return a five under par nett score of 66 off a handicap of 12. Playing conditions were tough by this proved no obstacle to Michael.

As is the case every year there were the traditional horror holes for some competitors. Michael, however, managed to avoid any disasters to lead the way at the end of play on the first day and was certain of qualification for the 9 hole play-off on Saturday evening. The target score for best qualifier had been posted on Friday.

Play got under way just after 7am on Saturday. The last 3 ball commenced just after 12.15pm. The event ran smoothly. This was due in no small way to the assistance given by member of our junior club. Ball spotters were on hand at the fourth fairway and this helped to keep play moving. Everything worked like a well-oiled clock.

Brendan English (18) headed the leader board after all cards were returned after the 18 hole qualifier was completed. He returned a superb nett score of 65. Brendan has been threatening to produce a score of this magnitude for some time.

He gave an indication of this during the recent president’s prize, an event in which he finished sixth. He managed to hold his form to produce the best qualifying score and was assured at least of that prize in advance of the play-off.

The manner in which the whole event was organised was testament to the experience of this year’s men’s club committee. Vice captain, Stephen Slattery was the organiser in chief and nothing was left to chance. The play-off started on time. The top 27 players commenced together in a shotgun start and the battle for the honour of collecting the top prize began in earnest.

Frantic last minute betting forced the bookies to send Clem Leonard off as favourite. With nine tough holes ahead of the 27 qualifiers, it was anyone’s guess as to who would emerge as the 2009 captain’s prizewinner. John Maguire, Michael McGrath, Oliver Walsh, Paddy Dunne, Brendan English and Clem Leonard were all well fancied.

The weather deteriorated and added to the test. It was going to come down to who had the bottle or that little bit of luck. Who would be able to handle the pressure? Who would be able to deliver a score to win?

As the play-off continued it became evident that the 3 ball involving John Maguire, Paddy Dunne and Oliver Walsh were going well.

The spectators began to congregate around this group heading to the closing stages. Paddy Dunne (13) and John Maguire (8) had both returned nett 18 hole qualifying scores of 66. Oliver Walsh (9) had returned a score of 68. Paddy Dunne played the play-off holes in 40 strokes. This was 2 more than John and Oliver.

However, when the handicap allowance was applied Paddy emerged as the winner on a combined nett score of 99.5 as against John’s combined nett score of 100. Oliver finished 100.5.

John Maguire won’t come as close again to winning. However, it was Paddy Dunne’s day and he proved to be a most popular winner. The presentation of prizes commenced a 10.30pm. The clubhouse was full to capacity.

Men’s club secretary Tom Nugent was master of ceremonies for the night. Angela Mullins, president and Eithne Bermingham, captain of the ladies club, both congratulated Jerry on the occasion of his captain’s prize competition.

Jerry’s address to the members and guests was well received. He thanked the members of the men’s club committee for their work in organising the event. He paid special tribute to the work put in by vice captain, Stephen Slattery.

Paddy Dunne received his prize to rapturous applause. His winner’s speech was both complimentary and witty. He proved to be a most popular winner of the 2009 showpiece event. John Maguire took the runners-up prize and third prize went to Oliver Walsh.

Michael McGrath and Brian McSweeney finished fourth and fifth respectfully. Brendan English took the best qualifier prize and the front and back nine prizes went to Ger Hellen and Kieran Walsh.

The best past captain was Colman Murphy with a nett score of 73. The best golfer over the 18 hole qualifier was Clem Leonard. Clem won the gross prize with a 2 over par score of 73. Pat Luddy won the best veteran prize with a nett score of 69. Kieran Clancy was presented with a prize for his hole in one at the third hole.

The presentation was followed by a meal. Once again Jennifer Hurley produced the goods. The evening concluded with superb music and dancing. The memories will last a lifetime for Jerry and his family, guests and friends. Susan, Roy, Dean and Bree Ann will hold this special day in their hearts forever. For them 2009 will be a special year.

The memories will last a lifetime. Congratulations to Jerry also. His leadership qualities are stamped all over 2009. He has taken the club forward in difficult times. He is never shy in making his point. He has to be respected for that.

Well done to all concerned. Thanks to all those who competed. Congratulations to Paddy Dunne. Many happy days golf in comfort. Enjoy your prize.

As the dust settles on another year of ‘majors’ at the club, the men’s club wishes to take this opportunity to wish every success to the ladies club and in particular lady captain Eithne Bermingham for the ladies captain’s prize event on August 15th.

GLENROE G.A.A.

- Important win for intermediates -

Glenroe were lucky to grind out a win over Caherline in the second round of the county championship, played in Knocklong on Friday evening last. They were defeated by Hospital/Herbertstown in the first round.

This was an important victory in that it ensures that Glenroe now have a reasonable chance of reaching the quarter-final stages provided that they can account for Newcastle West in the third round.

For some reason Glenroe were lethargic throughout the game and in no way displayed the same standard of hurling, which they showed in a recent challenge game against Mungret.

GLENORE 2-7 CAHERLINE 0-11

Caherline opened the scoring with a point from a 55m free in the 1st min. John Quane responded with a point from play in the 4th min. Eoin Walsh won possession of the ball and broke through the Caherline defence to score a goal to give Glenroe the lead in the 7th min.

Fouling by the Glenroe backs conceded two points to the opposition from close-range frees. They added a point from play to put the teams back on level terms by the 18th min. Glenroe came more into the game in the second quarter and scored three points from play (one each by Declan O’Connor, John Quane and Stephen Walsh).

Both teams exchanged points from frees in the final few minutes of the first half to leave Glenroe leading by 1-5 to 0-5 having played with the advantage of a stiff breeze.

The conceding of a soft free within 30 seconds of play resuming gifted Caherline the chance to add a further point to their score, which their accurate free-taker, Donnacha O’Loughlin, easily converted. They scored a further point from play in the 31st min. to reduce the margin to a point.

Glenroe introduced three substitutes over the following ten minutes (Justin McCarthy, Donal Kelly and Maurice Kelly for Philip Coffey, Mike Mansell and DJ Sheehy respectively). Mark O’Connell pointed from a 25m free at the three quarter stage.

Caherline scored four points in succession, three of them from frees, to lead by 0-11 to 1-6 at the 55th min stage. The game appeared to have gone from Glenroe at this stage.

However, lady luck came Glenroe’s way one minute later when a free on the 50m line taken by Mark O’Connell, ended up with the Caherline goalie crossing his own goal-line with the ball to concede a goal.

Glenroe responded well to this score and a free on the 50m line was scored by Mark O’Connell in the final minute to give Glenroe a two point advantage at the final whistle. Glenroe as a team played poorly in this game and were relieved to see victory at the end. The conceding of silly fouls gifted eight points to Caherline.

Kevin Hickey played well in goal and brought off an important save at a critical stage in the game. Stephen Fox, Johnny Murphy, Mike O’Brien and Stephen Walsh played well in defence. The battles at centrefield and in the forward line were mainly lost throughout the hour, with Eoin Walsh offering the biggest threat at corner forward.

The scores by Mark O’Connell, making his first championship appearance at intermediate level, were crucial in sealing the victory at the end of the game. Team and scorers: K Hickey, S Fox, J Murphy, P Coffey, S Walsh (0-1), M O’Brien, D McCarthy, JB Murphy, J Quane (0-2), M O’Connell (1-2), T Crawford, DJ Sheehy, M Mansell, D O’Connor (0-1), E Walsh (1-1; 0-1 from free).
