GLANWORTH G.A.A.

- Excellent attendance at Harbour AGM -

Glanworth GAA’s annual general meeting attracted an excellent attendance and outgoing chairperson, Kevin O’Callaghan opened proceedings by paying a well deserved tribute to the players and mentors who had brought so much success to the club in 2009.

Kevin said that the winning of the junior A football county title had given an inestimable boost to the morale of the people of the parish in what had been a difficult year on the economic front.

Secretary, Lynn Fahy gave a comprehensive report on every area of the club’s activities while joint treasurer, Pauline O’Dwyer showed that the club is on a very sound financial footing.

Michael (Monty) Healy presided over the election of officers for 2010 and the officers elected were: chairperson Kevin O’Keeffe; vice chairperson Seanie Pierce; secretary Liam Brennan; assistant secretary Liam Cotter; treasurer Tom O’Keeffe, registrar Lynn Fahy, assistant registrar Claire O’Callaghan, membership officers Kathleen Finn and Bernie Caffrey; insurance officer Paul Cotter; PRO Ollie Ryan; Scor co-ordinators Marian O’Callaghan and Daithi Pierce; County Board delegates Arthur O’Keeffe, Frank O’Flynn (proxy Daithi Pierce); North Cork Board delegates Seanie Pierce, Arthur O’Keeffe and Owen McAuliffe; club referees Ciaran Cotter, Barth O’Keeffe and Denis Healy.

Further details of the AGM will be included in next week’s notes.

SYMPATHY

We offer our sympathy to the family of the late Jimmy Corbett, Ballinacahera, Ballindangan. The late Jimmy was a highly respected member of the community and we share in his family’s loss.

Our condolences are also sent to the family of the late Mary O’Keeffe, Banteer, Rylane and Ballindangan. We are particularly mindful of the grief of her sister Phil and the Walsh family.

We also extend our sympathy to the family of the late Kitty King, Mitchelstown. All club members bear in mind the loss to her brothers, Jack and Tommy and their families who have a very close association with Glanworth GAA.

May their souls rest in peace.

MEETING AND LOTTO DRAW

The first meeting for 2010 will be held in the clubrooms on Tuesday next, January 12 at 8.30pm. The club lotto will take place in the same venue at 9.30pm and everybody is invited to attend.

GREETINGS

We wish all our readers and supporters a happy and prosperous 2010. Our supporters were magnificent, as always, in 2009 and we hope that we can give you more cause for joy in the coming year.

FERMOY CYCLING CLUB

- 2010 cycling season approaches -

With the new year just begun, the cyclists of the Fermoy Cycling Club are looking forward to the 2010 racing season, which will get underway on Sunday, February 28 in Tralee, Co. Kerry, where the local club will be promoting the Lacey trophy race.

Unfortunately, the weather over the Christmas and new year holiday was not suitable for cyclists, so the cyclists who had been looking forward to getting in plenty of training miles, found themselves very limited in the amount of cycling they could do on the open road.

However, no doubt the weather will change shortly and the cyclists will be able to make up for lost time. One event that fell foul of the weather, last Sunday, was the Blarney Memorial Sportive, which had to be postponed and will now be held instead on Sunday, January 17.

Indoor training this week will be on Wednesday night only, at Colaiste an Chraoibhin at 7pm. All cyclists, who are interested are invited to attend, young and old.

Cyclists are reminded that Cycling Ireland licence application forms for 2010 are available from the club secretary, Michael O’Connor or from Hennessy Cycles.

FERMOY HOCKEY CLUB

- Weather not deterring Fermoy hockey -

Fermoy’s division 3 team started 2010 in difficult conditions when they faced Dungarvan on Sunday last. Fermoy started the game slowly with Dungarvan attacking well in the first ten minutes.

However, once Fermoy settled and began to get used to the grit pitch they were playing on, they began to attack more and began to gain possession over Dungarvan.

A first goal in after 20 minutes was a great start scored by Natalie Guile with assistance from Liz Sweetnam and Maria Daly. This settled Fermoy and more chances were to be got from Nicola Howard and Trish Fitzpatrick but they were misfortunate in not finding the net.

The second half was dominated well by Fermoy with Orla Cotter playing some great attacking hockey and unlucky not to have scored. Dungarvan pushed forward at times, putting pressure on but our defenders were strong at all times with Aine O’Brien on the left having a tremendous game and not leaving her Dungarvan attackers in at any stage.

The game ended 1-0 to Fermoy, which gives Fermoy a 9/9 win to date. Aine O’Brien received player of the match, sponsored by Vanilla Boutique, Fermoy. Conditions were difficult and from the start Aine played to the pace of the game.

Dungarvan attacked strong in the first ten minutes and Aine was exceptional in repelling the attacks.

Playing in defence, she made some attacks forward where she directed them up to our forward line but was equally versatile in getting back to her defending position. Team: Elaine O’Flynn, Aine O’Brien, Liz Barry, Liz Sweetnam, Aisling Cotter, Maria Daly, Ann Galvin (capt), Mary Howard, Trish Fitzpatrick, Natalie Keniry (1), Nicola Howard, Orla Cotter, Ide Ryan, Niamh Barry and Trisha Coughlan.

FIXTURES

Our division 3 team take on Harlequins at Fermoy this Sunday at 12.30pm. The division 4 team are not in action until the following weekend.

BALLYHOOLY G.A.A.

- Ballyhooly compete in Scor na nOg county final -

The club launched its new range of sportswear last Saturday evening in Ballyporeen Ballyhooly ceol uirlise and trath na gceist teams competed in the co final in the Eire Og Club in Ovens on Sunday evening. Both did well but failed to finish either as winners or runners-up.

However, it is a great achievement to get to a co final and most of Sunday’s participants are eligible again next year, so maybe we can go one better then.

The music group of Ciara and Lisa Howard, Sandra Dineen, Melanie Ryan and Aine Roche upped their co semi-final performance with good renditions of ‘The Humours of Innistimon’ and ‘Kilabil’ but Millstreet won this competition with Ballinora in the runners-up spot.

Our quiz team of Siobhan Roche, Fintan Linehan and Eamon O’Reilly also did well but Boherbue and last year’s winners Micheal MacCarthaighs took the honours.

A big thank you to all our supporters who braved the bad road conditions to travel. Also of course thanks for supporting us in the rounds leading up to the co final. Also thanks to Gus and Nuala O’Reilly who made the long journey from Louisburg, Co Mayo in hazardous weather conditions on Sunday morning to make sure Eamon was in Ovens on time.

Well done also to Fear an Ti, Daithi Pierce from Glanworth, who did an excellent job in introducing the competitors and keeping the show moving.

POC FADA

Our annual poc fada for the Connie O’Connell Cup was held on Sunday, 27th December. Weather conditions meant a number of defections including last year’s winners, who were unable to travel.

However, competition was still keen and the proceeds went to Fermoy Hospital.

This year’s winner was Bride Rovers and Cork senior player Barry Johnson, who pipped our own Kieran McCarthy and Patrick O’Connor. Kieran and Patrick tied for the runner-up spot and in the play off Kieran won with the longest puck of the day.

As usual Christy and the O’Connell family were present to present the prizes to the winners. Thanks to Christy, who also sponsors the prizes for this annual event.

LOTTO

The numbers drawn in Poachers on Monday night were: 31, 33 and 35. There was no winner of the ˆ2,400 jackpot.

Lucky dip winners ˆ20 each: Brid Fenton, Glenville; Hannah May O’Connell, Ballymacphilip; Mossy O’Connell, Ballymacphilip; Ger Barrett, Glaise na mBreac; Pauline O’Callaghan, c/o SuperValu.

The next draw for a jackpot of ˆ2,600 will be in The Roundy House on Monday, 18th January.

JOHN O'KEEFFE RIP

In early December we were all saddened to hear of John O’Keeffe’s death at a relatively young age. John had been a key figure in the great work done in our community by the Tidy Towns Committee and the Senior Citizens Group over a long number of years.

He was also a GAA supporter and when Derry, Donal and Noelle were involved at juvenile level he was always on hand at meetings, games, socials etc. John will be missed by us all.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Noreen, his mother Ellen, his daughters Noelle and Irene, sons Donal and Derry and all the O’Keeffe family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

BLACKWATER ROVERS

A special meeting of Blackwater Rovers U14, U16 and minor clubs will be held in Ballyhooly Community Hall on Saturday next, January 9th at 9.00pm. All parents and anyone interested in helping out is asked to attend.

JUVENILE GAA

Ballyhooly Juvenile GAA held a very constructive AGM on Monday night in the dressing-rooms. Chairman, Liam Dineen, secretary, Mary O’Driscoll, and treasurer, Majella Roche, all presented concise and positive reports and all were re-elected for another year with Brendan McCarthy as president.

The juvenile highlight of the year was of course the winning of the U14 hurling championship. The juvenile club are doing Trojan work and we all wish them well in 2010.

LISMORE GOLF CLUB

- ‘Jack Frost’ spoils Christmas golf -

For the last 3 weeks we have been starved of golf due to the abnormal long run of cold harsh weather. The frost has made ground conditions unplayable so the course has been closed for its longest spell in recent memory.

In the middle of last week our captain, Declan, had to postpone our annual captain’s drive in and also all of our planned Christmas competitions. With little chance of play in the early parts of January we have set up an ongoing 12 hole competition from 31st December up until 10th January.

OUT OF BOUNDS

Members are advised to take note of two new out of bounds areas on the course. On the left of the second fairway beyond the wall the white stakes have been extended out further so if your drive is left of the big tree you could end up out of bounds.

Also the heavy growth area to the right of the 13th tee when playing the old 8th hole is now also out of bounds. Both of these areas were spots where people were having lots of difficulty finding their ball.

Even if the ball was found it was 50-50 if you could advance it forward, so in an effort to speed up play these areas are now out of bounds. Please familiarise yourself with these new white stakes as soon as possible.

COURSE LAYOUT

Due to the introduction of our excellent tunnel initiative we have for the last 2 months been testing out new ways to play the course. This was done on an experimental basis and will continue up until 10th January. A further trial will revert the course back to its original format from 11th January for the duration of the spring league.

So from 11th January when you go across the road you will enter the course below the 8th green and cross over the fairway to the original 4th tee. Again this is a trial run so that when we are ready for 18 hole competitions we will all have a better feel for which route is the best option going forward.

We would like to thank our members for their understanding and patience whilst all these experiments are in place. All feedback and suggestions are also welcome.

CAPTAIN'S DRIVE IN

Our annual captain’s drive has been rescheduled and will now take place on Sunday, 11th January at 12.30. This will be followed by a 9-hole mixed competition and some light refreshments. Members are asked to come along to support and enjoy what should be a fun day out for all.

DERMOT O'LEARY AGRI LTD - SPRING LEAGUE

The ever popular 2010 Dermot O’Leary Agri Ltd Spring League has been delayed for one week due to the weather. With Christmas being a freeze out some people have yet to get their name on the entry sheet.

Members are asked to do so as soon as possible as the closing date is next Sunday 10th. The 1st round of the spring league is now planned to commence on the 11th of January, weather permitting.

MONTHLY MEETINGS

The men’s 1st meeting for 2010 has been rescheduled and will now take place on Thursday, 7th January at 8pm. The parent 1st meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 12th January at 7.30pm.

NEW YEAR WISHES

On behalf of all the officers of Lismore Golf Club we would like to wish all our sponsors, staff, friends, and our members a very prosperous new year.

2009 was a difficult period for many so as a new year is upon us we hope that 2010 brings some good to you all.

We look forward to seeing you in our club during the year.

FIXTURES

Thursday, 31st December – Sunday, 10th January 12 Hole Stableford; Sunday, 10th January – captain’s drive in at 12.30 followed by 9 hole mixed. Monday, 11th Spring League commences.

KILWORTH SQUASH CLUB

- A game every three days -

CLUB WINTER LEAGUE

If you have not yet started to play your league games, then please start as soon as possible. With only 31 days until the cut off date, you have a game about every 3 days in order to get all of your nine games completed before the cut off date of the 25th January, 2010.

Just a reminder, there are no fixtures as such. You just ring any opponent in your line and arrange the games yourselves. We used to have the court booked for a whole evening before but there might have been only two games played which meant that others couldn’t use the court either, thus the reason for this new format.

Remember, the entry fee is only a measly ˆ5. Please pay this at the earliest possible convenience to any committee member along with any outstanding membership subs. See website for more details on the league.

MEMBERSHIP

As of yet, there are still very few memberships handed in. As you are aware, the membership subs play a crucial role in the running of our club. Undoubtedly, for many, it is just a case of not meeting committee members to pass this on.

So, alternatively, memberships can be put into an envelope marked with your own name and handed into the letter box at 10 Cois Coillte, Kilworth (Conor Cooney’s house), if you are finding it difficult to meet any committee members.

Adult membership is only ˆ50, family membership is ˆ80, Students (Secondary and Third Level) is ˆ20 while Juveniles (U16’s) cost only ˆ10 for the year. If you don’t already have a key for the front door, we can provide you with one for the paltry sum of ˆ3.

Membership fees can be handed in to any committee member. Thanks again for your valued support.

CONTACTS

If you are interested in joining or have any queries please contact Trevor 086-947 7210 - trevor@slatterytravel.ie or Conor 086-823 9754 – conor.cooney@arup.com. Our website is now up and running. The website address is http://sites.google.com/site/kilworthsquashclub/.

DIVISION 2

Kilworth v Orchard: After a long wait Kilworth A were finally able to field a full strength side against The Orchard, as Trevor Slattery made his long awaited return and nearly claimed their first big scalp of the season.

Oh so close, but this will help the confidence going into round two.

Trevor played his match on the Tuesday prior due to business commitments and had a gut wrenching 9-11 loss in the 5th after levelling things up from being 2 games down. A great effort first up, however The Orchard man who reffed told us the next night that Trev missed out on about 8 strokes due to being too friendly!!

Could have been the difference! Pat Hanley kicked things off on the Wednesday with a 3-0 demolition of league secretary Richard Fitzgerald. Pat was on fire again, taking the ball nice and early, with amazing court coverage and by the end of the second game Richard had all but flagged it away.

Unfortunately Conor couldn’t repeat the dose at No 4, going down in 3. Con was in each game till late on and had his chances to gain vital points for the team, setting many rallies up nicely, but then fluffing the vital winning stroke.

Garth got off to a flier against his opponent who had to walk straight on to the chilly court from the car going 2 up. A combination of the opponent getting used to conditions and a slight loss of focus saw the match levelled at 2 all, but Garth managed to close the 5th out comfortably enough. This left Brian with a chance to lead the team to glory.

He gave it all, but too many lengthy rallies took their toll and although the match was poised at 1 game each, tiredness lead to too many mistakes being made and Brian went down 1-3. So a loss 9-14, but getting very much closer to a big scalp.

DIVISION 4

A well deserved break for the division 4 team last week as they headed into the Christmas break with a 15 point lead. Well done lads.
