COLAISTE AN CHRAOIBHIN SPORTS

- Colaiste triumph over rugby cup favourites -

Colaiste an Chraoibin, Fermoy 12 Youghal Community School 7

A wise man once said that it’s not the size of the team in the fight; but the size of the fight in the team and this was never more suited to this cup tie. Colaiste entered into senior rugby O’Brien Cup with a number of huge obstacles in their path but succeeded regardless with great passion and pride.

The first difficulty was the opposition. An impressive Waterpark team recently beat Colaiste but Youghal comprehensively defeated this Waterford school in the development league final. The second problem was that due to the weather Colaiste lost home advantage so had to travel to Youghal and finally when one considers that the Youghal U18 club team are flying high and undefeated in the league, Colaiste were always huge underdogs.

However, the fight in these heroic underdogs was never in doubt from the opening stages when number 8 Darren Hartnett caught the kick off and despite a nasty blood injury broke a number of tackles to put Colaiste on the front foot. The game was keenly contested in the opening 10 minutes as neither side wanted to give the opposition a foot hold to build on for the remainder of the game.

However, after a pulsating 17 minutes Youghal took the lead after an unforced error from the Colaiste side. Youghal attempted to kick a penalty from a good distance out but as this drifted under the crossbar the ball was knocked on for a Youghal scrum.

The Fermoy school were unable to defend this scrum and Youghal crossed for an unexpected converted try. To their credit Colaiste bounced back and played the remainder of the half camped in the Youghal 22. On three different occasions Colaiste crossed the line but on all three times there were judged to be held up, knocked on or in touch in the build up play. Therefore Youghal held on to their 7-point lead until half time.

Colaiste heads did not drop at half time despite not being able to break down the Youghal defence and simply vowed to give it their all for the second period or else their rugby year in Colaiste was all but over. Colaiste nonetheless got off to the worst possible start as Youghal set up camp in the Colaiste 22, but eventually got out of jail with a huge kick from out half Thomas McAuliffe.

Colaiste began to put on a bit of pressure of their own after this and the Fermoy school forwards started to dominate up front. This left Edward O’Connell to orchestrate every attack and eventually after a number of phases Thomas Donegan stormed over from close range to leave the Colaiste trailing by two points. This deficit turned into a level pegging game after the conversion, as McAuliffe nailed his kick into the breeze from an almost impossible angle.

There was only one team who was going on to win this cup tie from here as Colaiste surged forward again and again in search of winning scores. Unfortunately after a mix up in communication Colaiste found themselves back on their own 22 once again. McAuliffe, who kicked almost the length of the field, again relieved the pressure. Amazingly this kick was chased and when Colaiste’s flying winger Stephen Pratt blocked the Youghal full back’s attempted clearance, he somehow gathered possession to score the winning try.

Colaiste now held a 12 to 7 lead and this was never going to be let go as the Youghal pack had no answer to the strength and commitment of the Colaiste forwards. The last 9 minutes were played in the opposition half as Colaiste kept the ball tight and eliminated all mistakes as well as keeping the Youghal defence thinking with some clever kicks. The final whistle was greeted with joy and elation from all linked to the Fermoy school.

The manner of the comeback will live long into the future in the school, as it was an immensely proud day for the brave players who put their bodies on the line for the navy and sky blue jersey. The pack was colossal throughout the cup-tie. Darren Hartnett was incredible right the way through while he was well supported by a fantastic back row duo of Wayne Fitzgerald and Laurence Lomasney. The pair were super around the park, they stole numerous amounts of opposition ball and competed throughout in the lineout also.

The try scorer Thomas Donegan got the vital score despite an ankle injury, while his second row partner Thomas O’Donoghue continues to have the season of his career with outstanding performances on every occasion. The front row also worked tirelessly and had a huge role to play in the success. Kenneth O’Flaherty never shirked responsibility all day, James O’Driscoll responded well after a few missed line-out throws and shows confidence beyond his years while Roy Gallagher caught the eye for making himself available for every crash ball off almost every ruck.

In the backs, Edward O’Connell played a captains part in the victory while Thomas McAuliffe made his comeback after a long-term injury to be an inspiration to his teammates. The centre pairing of Geoffrey Shanahan and Owen McCarthy were outstanding and strong in defence but always made themselves available to break the valuable gain line throughout the contest.

The back 3 of Kevin Walsh, Aidan O’Sullivan and Stephen Pratt were faultless, dependable and illusive all day. Their heart to chase lost causes was rewarded with the winning try while the subs used (Raymond Slattery and Lewis Mitchell) contributed in times of need to and definitely gave the team the extra innovation needed to win a tight game like this one.

What’s next for the courageous Colaiste characters you might ask? Yes it’s another away day, this time against St Caimins in Shannon, so watch this space!!!!

Colaiste an Chraoibhin: Roy Gallagher, James O’Driscoll, Kenneth O’Flaherty, Thomas O’Donoghue, Thomas Donegan, Wayne Fitzgerald, Laurence Lomasney, Darren Hartnett, Edward O’Connell, Thomas McAuliffe, Kevin Walsh, Owen McCarthy, Geoffrey Shanahan, Stephen Pratt, Aidan O’Sullivan. Subs used:Raymond Slattery and Lewis Mitchell. Subs: Adrian Clancy, Kieran Dorgan, Jeffrey Daly, Jason Pratt.

LISMORE GOLF CLUB

- Great scores despite bad weather -

12 HOLE STABLEFORD

Despite the poor weather we still had some excellent scores again the week. The winner of the 12 hole competition this week kindly sponsored by David Walsh, Dungarvan, was Gary Baverstock (22) who posted an excellent score of 31 points. The highlight of Gary’s round was at the 4th where his birdie 3 secured an invaluable 5 pointer for his card. In second place this week was Martin Power (14) who shot the best score of many 30 pointers this week.

Martin’s card was boosted by having 2 birdies on his card at the easy 4th and 7th holes! In third place was last week’s winner Michael O’Grady (22) who just edged out James Bennett on the last 6 holes with 30 points. This was all the more impressive as Michael had been deducted 2 penalty points from last week’s win.
