The tragic death of 76 year old Mary Bradfield, who was killed in a road crash on Tuesday last, has caused great sorrow amongst the local community, not just in Kilbehenny, but also throughout the whole area.
A former member of Kilbehenny ICA, the deceased, although well into her 70s, was sprightly and very active. Described locally as a ‘quiet’ woman, Mary was mother to local publican Noel Bradfield, the proprietor of the Three Counties Bar in Kilbehenny. She was predeceased a number of years ago by her husband Billy.
Gardai are investigating the fatal road traffic collision which occurred at Corracunna, between Mitchelstown and Kilbehenny on the main Dublin/Cork road north of Mitchelstown, on Tuesday last, February 5 at 6.20pm. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, the victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
The body of Mrs Bradfield was taken to Cork University Hospital where a postmortem examination was scheduled to take place. The driver of the lorry is reported to be uninjured, but suffering from shock.
The road at the scene was closed on Tuesday night at the roundabout north of Mitchelstown near The Firgrove Hotel while garda forensic collision investigators carried out their enquires. It was reopened on Wednesday morning.
The location where the tragic accident occurred is a notorious black spot where a number of people have been killed in vehicle crashes. The remains of Mary Bradfield will repose at O’Sullivan’s Funeral Home, Kilbehenny from 6 to 8pm on this Thursday evening, February 7, before removal to the local parish church.
Burial will take place in the local cemetery on this Friday after requiem Mass in Kilbehenny church.
The Avondhu wishes to express its deepest sympathies to the Bradfield family.
