BALLYHOOLY GAA

- Footballers lose by narrowest of margins -

Kilworth 2-5 Ballyhooly 0-10
The disappointment etched on the faces of the Ballyhooly players at the finish showed how they felt about losing this nail biting junior ‘A’ football semi-final by the narrowest of margins in Castletownroche on Saturday evening.

They had matched their fancied opponents in every aspect of play except in goal scoring, however the old cliche that goals win games once again proved true and Kilworth’s ace marksman Elton Pierce got two in the second half - one was fortuitous from a free and the one that proved the winner was a superb strike from play in the 28th min. at a stage when the teams were level.

In the remaining minutes, Ballyhooly managed to reduce the margin to a single point but time ran out on their comeback effort. In ideal conditions Kilworth got a point from the throw-in but in the 2nd min wing back Eoin Hegarty won a ball at midfield and soloed through for a fine equaliser.

Kilworth got their 2nd point in the 4th min but Joe Dowling finished a fine movement over the bar in the 7th minute after a movement started by Gerry O’Connor and carried on by Kevin O’Driscoll and Barry Noonan.

Barry Noonan was causing all sorts of problems for the Kilworth defence at this stage - he finished a movement involving Kevin McCarthy and Joe Dowling in the 11th min and when he was fouled in the 16th min Cathal O’Keeffe put us 0-4 to 0-3 ahead. It was obvious at this stage that there was little between these two evenly matched teams.

Defences were generally on top and the Ballyhooly sextet were playing well as a unit - Garry was in sparkling form at full back, Roy Dorgan was keeping a close eye on Kilworth danger man Paudie Lynch and Eoin Hegarty was doing excellent work in the half line.

There were no further scores in the half but on three occasions in the 2nd quarter goalkeeper Patrick O’Connor came to Ballyhooly’s rescue with superb saves and on each occasion cleared his line or sent it out for a 45.

Kevin Kiely came in at corner forward for Michael Whelan after the break and Cathal O’Keeffe put us two points clear when he pointed in the 4th minute after Eamon Hanrahan was fouled.

Elton Pierce got a point back for Kilworth almost immediately and in the 7th min Pierce’s 30m free slipped through Ballyhooly hands into the net - the sun directly shining into the Ballyhooly defences eyes was obviously a factor. That goal stirred on Ballyhooly to renewed effort.

In the 10th min Kieran McCarthy drove forward from defence and set up Eamon Harahan for point no 6 in the 10th min and in the 16th min Joe Dowling finished a movement involving Barry Noonan and Roy Dorgan over the bar - teams level once more 0-7 to 1-4. In the 17th min Kilworth went a point clear and the tempo of the game increased.

Ballyhooly switched Joe Dowling to No.14 in a move with Kevin McCarthy and when Kevin was fouled 30 metres out on the left in the 25th min Cathal O’Keeffe pointed. Kevin O’Driscoll came to midfield at this stage in a switch with Denis Beecher - Denis Kiely had moved there in the 1st half in a switch with Cathal O’Keeffe and over the hour the different combinations all had their moments.

In a low scoring game the next score was going to be vital and when it came in the 28th minute it was a goal for Dilworth - a long pass out of defence found Elton Pierce in space running up the right wing, he carried the ball about 20 metres to the 13 metre line - I think most people thought he would go for a point but Elton had different ideas and he sent a pile-driver low into the left corner.

Time was not on Ballyhooly’s side at this stage but again they showed great spirit and determination to hit back. Denis Kiely won the kick out and when Kevin McCarthy was fouled he parted to Barry Noonan who pointed. In the 32nd minute Joe Dowling pointed after a pass from Cathal O’Keeffe.

The final whistle came before we could manage an equaliser but well done to everyone involved. We wish Kilworth all the best in the final against either Glanworth or Mitchelstown.

Saturday nights game was a fine sporting game - a credit to both teams and experienced referee Dave O’Farrell had an easy night with two teams playing open football. Hopefully we can put Saturday night’s narrow defeat behind us when we face old rivals Araglin in the junior ‘A’ hurling semi-final in Fermoy on Friday night at 7pm.

Araglin of course have been concentrating on football and have had two very impressive wins against Beara and Kilbrin in the county junior ‘B’ football championship. However they are equally good with the small ball and Friday night’s contest will be keenly contested - Best of luck lads.

Team: Patrick O’Connor, Colm O’Connor, Gerry O’Connor, Roy Dorgan, Eoin Hegarty, Kieran McCarthy, Kevin O’Driscoll, Cathan O’Keeffe, Denis Beecher, Denis Kiely, Joe Dowling, Barry Noonan, Ml.Whelan, Kevin McCarthy, Eamon Harahan. Subs used: Kevin Kiely.

Referee: Dave Farrell (Mitchelstown)

FIXTURES

Friday, 8th August in Fermoy at 7pm: Junior ‘A’ Hurling Semi-final Ballyhooly v Araglin Tuesday 12th August in Mallow at 7pm Minor ‘B’ Football championship - Blackwater Rovers v Clyde Rovers

LOTTO JACKPOT is now ˆ2,600. The numbers drawn in Vinnies on Monday night were: 18, 24, 33. There was no winner of the ˆ2400 jackpot. Lucky dip winners ˆ20 each: 1. Paudie Beecher, Mitchelstown, 2. Mattie Ferrick, Fermoy, 3. McCarthy family, Rahard Rd. 4. Mary McCarthy, Fermoy, 5. Donie O’Keeffe, Bloomfield. The next draw for a jackpot of ˆ2,600 will be in The Roundy House Bar on Monday, 18th August.

Thanks to everyone who helped out with the stewarding at last Sunday afternoon’s junior ‘A’ football semi-final. The replay is now likely to go ahead in mid August.

CLUB MEETING

The club executive meeting is on Monday, 11th August in the dressing rooms at 9pm. Blackwater Rovers beaten in Semi-final Ballyhea 1-19 Blackwater Rovers 2-7 Blackwater Rovers bowed out of the minor ‘B’ hurling championship at the semi-final stage in Doneraile on Tuesday, 29th July.

The teams were level at 0-1 each after 10 mins but even at that stage it was obvious that they would face and uphill battle against a better balanced Ballyhea 15. Ballyhea led by 1-13 to 0-4 at the break but Blackwater Rovers came out with all guns blazing after the break.

A great goal by James Roche was the ideal start to the 2nd half and when substitute David Roche got goal no. 2 and Adrian Browne and Ian O’Gorman sent over points the lead was down to 6 points after 10 mins 1-15 to 2-6.

However, that was as close as Rovers got as Ballyhea recovered their composure in the final quarter and were deserving winners. Apart from those already mentioned Rovers had good performance from Darragh O’Reilly, Cian Lombard (in goal), James Magner and Sean O’Regan.

They now turn to the football championship and face Kilworth in Fermoy on Tuesday, 5th August and Clyda Rovers in Mallow on Tuesday, 12th August. Hopefully they can again get to the final stages of the football championship and maybe go one better than the hurlers and win it out. Best of luck lads.

Team: Cian Lombard, James O’Driscoll, Kevin McCarthy, Fergus Linehan, Sean O’Regan, Kevin Kiely, James Magner, James Roche, Darragh O’Reilly, Pat Cronin, Ian O’Gorman, Tommy Sheehan, Sean O’Mahony, Tommy Donegan, Adrian Browne. Subs used: Diarmuid Emery and David Roche.

Referee: Declan Lehane (Doneraile).

CARRAIG NA BHFEAR ATHLETIC CLUB

- Doubles for Ciaran and David at Midleton Open Sports -

The Midleton annual open sports day took place at the local CBS school grounds, on Sunday, 27th July last. These popular sports, drew large crowds from Cork, Waterford, Kerry and Limerick, “where some top class competition ensured an exciting day for all concerned”.

Carraig na bhFear AC travelled in large numbers to the sports, where our athletes won their fair share of competitions throughout the day. Action got underway with the under 6 boys 60m sprint, here Carraig’s Ben Atkinson of Watergrasshill opened a winning account for his club with a pillar to post victory that caught the attention of the big crowd of supporters who cheered home this up and coming sprint champion.

In the U8 boys,60m race, Carraig na bhFear Timmy Hegarty of Carraig and Seamus Ahern of Bartlemy, ran very well and we could see them in the winners’ enclosure following this top performance in Midleton”.

In the U9 boys 80m sprint race, up and coming sprinter Ciaran Nugent of Bartlemy was all the rage when the Carraig lad recorded a pillar to post victory here, continuing a winning sequence of late.

Ciaran was in action next, in the U9 boys 300m race, he hit the front from the off, and never looked like he could be caught, “ as this talented youngster kicked for home entering the home straight, receiving a huge applause beating a lot of fancied runners on the day from Cork, Waterford, Kerry and Limerick.

Ciaran looks set for a big cross country season in this year’s calendar, where he hopes to be back in the medals again. Ciaran also tried his luck at the U9 boys’ long jump and finished a very close 3rd here on the day.

In the U9 girls 300m race, Carraig na bhFear’s Rachel Atkinson finished well up in 3rd place with her club mate Arrianne O’Flynn right there in 4th place. Arrianne finished 4th also in her U9 long jump event and better things lie ahead for this Carraig youngster. Katie Hegarty ran very well in her U10 girls 300m race, and now looks to be coming into some useful form for the future.

Meanwhile Arrianne O’Flynn moved up an age to finish 3rd in the U10 girls ball throw competition, and this granddaughter of former world veteran weight throwing champion, Dinny Howard of Rathcormac, looks to be following well in the footsteps of her world champion grandad.

Carraig na bhFear’s Maeve Ahern of Bartlemy, current Cork county and Munster track and field and cross country champion for 2007 was in action in Midleton in the U12 girls 100m sprint race, where Maeve was fast away to finish a close 3rd on the day, but in the 600m competition Maeve was electric, as she sat in the lead group for the first 300m, before kicking for home with a lap remaining, and nobody could stay with Maeve here, as she set sail for home with a commanding lead, going on to win here pulling up at the line with a lot left in the tank, and she too looks set for another very exciting 2008 cross country season.

In the U12 boys 100m sprint Carraig na bhFear’s David Akinson recorded the first half of a double at the Midleton meeting when he won here in fine style with his club mate Denis Hegarty also having a fine run finishing 4th.

David next lined out in the U12 boys 600m race where he played the waiting game in for the first lap with his club mate Denis Hegarty leading out here, David kicked for home with 200m to go and his double victory never looked in doubt as he crossed the winning post well clear of Daniel Colbert of Midleton in 2nd place and Denis Hegarty, David’s club mate was bang there for 3rd prize having led this race for the first lap.

Carraig’s Rachel Merritt of Glenville and Chloe O’Flynn of Rathcormac, went to post in the U12 girls 100m race, a Midleton girl won here with Rachel Merritt bang there in 2nd and Chloe O’Flynn close up in 4th place.

In their U12 girls 800m race Rachel had a big run here to finish right there in 2nd spot again, and Chloe was right there in 3rd. The relay competitions were exciting with Carraig’s U8 boys’ team of Timmy Harty, James Ahern, Ben Atkinson and Seamus Ahern going in this mixed relay side to finish a good 2nd on the day.

The U10 girls mixed team of Katie Hegarty, Angela O’Flynn, Arrianne O’Flynn and Rachel Atkinson were just outside the prizes when the 3 children and one adult squad finished a very close 4th following a big run.

The Carraig U12 mixed relay squad of Maeve Ahern, Donal Hegarty, Denis Harty and David Atkinson had a mighty run here winning in fine style to take 1st prize on the day.

And finally the Carraig U14 boys’ mixed relay squad of David Atkinson, Frank O’Halloran, Chloe O’Flynn and Rachel Merritt ran well here also when the quartet finished a very close 2nd on the day.

The best overall club on the day saw a narrow victory go to Midleton AC on home ground, just ahead of a gallant Carraig na bhFear side, who had some top drawer performances that saw them go very close to winning the best overall prize at the sports.

Congratulations to all those young and not so young Carraig na bhFear athletes who performed brilliantly at the Midleton sports recently.

Liscarroll Sports Liscarroll Athletic Club holds their annual open sports on this coming Sunday1(0th) in the Liscarroll GAA grounds, commencing at 1pm sharp.

Carraig na bhFear AC will travel in strength to the sports, for further enquiries contact Ger Foley on Tel: 086-3317710.

ARAGLIN GAA

- County final spot secured -

Araglin 1-11 Kilbrin 2-07
Yet another excellent showing by our footballers saw them qualify for this year’s Evening Echo sponsored junior ‘B’ football county championship final. The opposition keeps getting tougher and Kilbrin were by far and away the best opponents we’ve faced since our county final defeat to Dripsey in 2005.

If the opposition is getting tougher the level of performance from Araglin teams is rising accordingly. Pushed all the way by a fast, incisive and attack-minded side anything less than a 5 star display would have meant elimination from this competition.

In the end Araglin answered all the questions that were posed and emerged deserving winners by the narrowest of margins. Played on a fine Doneraile pitch and in very warm conditions this was an action packed affair. From a neutral’s point of view, two very evenly matched, ensured a fascinating contest.

The first score of the game was a point from Gus, however in the 6th minute Kilbrin announced their arrival with a well-worked goal. Possessing some very pacey players the Duhallow champions were a constant threat going forward. Our opponents edged ahead 1-01 to 0-01 before Dave Browne shot over to double our points total.

Dave’s positive start was to be no flash in the pan and he went on to have one of his finest ever games in an Araglin jersey, a view point backed up by experienced Irish Examiner reporter, Brendan Larkin who described the Fermoy-based mechanic as one of the best players on view.

Plenty of possession and a nice combination of foot and hand passing meant we carved out plenty of scoring opportunities. Peter O’Loughlin was frightfully unlucky to see his blaster come back off the crossbar, his next goal bound effort hit the upright. Dave Browne then turned provider to set up Gus for our third point.

The Kilbrin goal was being peppered with confident Araglin forwards needing no invitation to shoot for goals. Busy corner forward John Condon was the next to have a go at beating the Kilbrin keeper, however John Sheehan spread himself well to prevent a green flag from being raised.

All this pressure finally paid off and fittingly it was the persistent Peter O’Loughlin who got the 3 pointer, a lovely finish from close range, just before that he helped himself to a nice point. At 1-04 to 1-01 we had a good degree of control and most pleasing of all was the work ethic that ran right through the team from 1 to 15.

Working as hard as anyone was Sean Allen who played a lot of ball and was duly rewarded when he kicked over our 5th point. An irrepressible Dave Browne got his second point of the half to make it 1-06 to 1-02. A foul on Sean Allen provided Gus with a relatively straightforward point scoring opportunity, which he nailed.

Half time score Araglin 1-07, Kilbrin 1-04. John Condon kept up our scoring momentum by shooting over a great point from out the field. At 1-08 to 1-04 it looked like we might press on. Instead it was Kilbrin who seized the initiative and following a defensive lapse, a ball that should have been dealt with was snapped up by an inrushing Kilbrin forward who cannoned the ball to the net giving James Kenneally no chance.

This gave Kilbrin a major lift and they upped their game considerably. A pointed free from Gus was a most welcome score and the recently introduced Pat Buckley showed good feet to get point number 10 (1-10 to 2-05).

Sustained Kilbrin pressure resulted in them tying up the match at the three quarter stage and the gauntlet was well and truly thrown down. Showing the same maturity that saw them home against Liscarroll in the North Cork final, Araglin soaked up everything Kilbrin could throw at them and it was the midfielders and defenders that kept the Barbarians at the gate.

Full back Sean O’Doherty, flanked by James Kearney and Paul Hickey were on red alert status for all of this game and with the exception of one lapse they did a magnificent job.

Captain Paddy Kenneally and one of our main ball carriers Michael Kearney had a massive amount of defending to do in the second half and they passed the test. Dooner may have finished the game without his name on the score sheet but he was immense when Kilbrin had the kitchen sink out of its fittings and it was heading in his direction. Great positional sense and the ability to get something on every ball proved invaluable.

Really disciplined defending and being able to sustain a breathless work rate proved the difference - a late point from Gus gave us victory by the slimmest of margins. Araglin’s ability to win the midfield battle was another reason we won.

For the first time in a long time established midfielder Shay Russell was without the other twin tower, Seamie O’Gorman (unavailable due to injury). Shay performed up to his usual high standard and won a lot of vital possession.

What he didn’t win, ‘new boy’ Tom Lyons hoovered up. Despite a bit of contact lens trouble, the player drafted in to do a job in the middle of the park gave an exhibition of high fielding. His two catches in quick succession midway through the second half were priceless.

Like all those around him Kevin Fitzgerald despite covering acres of ground was going strong at the end, the levels of fitness displayed by both sides was commendable. Having passed a late fitness test goalkeeper James Kenneally had a solid game. There was no way he could have stopped any of the two goals and his kicking was very consistent. The game was sporting throughout with no nastiness of any description.

Well done to the team and the Araglin supporters who turned out in such numbers. With every passing game attendances are growing that’s great to see. The subs that were introduced, Pat Buckley and Tommy Feeney didn’t leave the side down.

Those not directly involved in the action also played their part from the sidelines. The water carriers had an especially busy day and they were in to refuel the boys at every available opportunity.

Team, panel and scorers: James Kenneally (GK), James Kearney (Propogue), Sean O’Doherty, Paul Hickey, Tom ‘Dooner’ Kenneally, Paddy Kenneally (captain), Mike Kearney Jr., Shay Russell, Tom Lyons, Kevin Fitzgerald, Dave Browne (0-02) Sean Allen (0-01) John Condon (0-01) Peter O’Loughlin (1-01) and James ‘Gus’ Kearney (Ballyheaphy) (0-05, 2 frees). In the end it was decided to call it a draw and give medals to all the players involved.

Final score Kilworth 8-03 (27 points) Ballyduff 5-12 (27 points).
Well done to Eoin Hickey for organising the fixture. Mick Cunningham and John Condon jnr assisted.
