- 16th annual open pairs bowling tournament a continued success -
The 16th annual open pairs bowling Tournament was held in the hall in Conna from Thursday 25th to Sunday, 28th September last. There was a big entry of 104 teams, which compares favourably with 92 for last year. The Conna club itself had 11 teams entered.
The four teams that emerged from the Thursday evening matches were: J O’Driscoll (DCS), John Martin and Michael O’Regan (Conna), Danny Twohig (Ballincollig Com.) and P. McEvoy (Mitchelstown).
From Friday evening we had Con Delaney (Ballincollig Com.), Conor Middleton (Crosshaven), Keith Middleton (Crosshaven) and Paddy O’Leary and Noeleen Tanner (Conna).
Saturday afternoon’s foursome were: Phillip Walton and Tom Finn (Conna), Eamon Stroker (BEDA), Sean O’Riordan (Watergrasshill) and M.White (Killarney).
The winners on Saturday night were: C. O’Sullivan (Midleton), M.Canning (Glounthaune), Tony O’Shea (Midleton) and Jim Caplice (Midleton).
On Sunday the 16 teams were reduced to 8 and then to 4 to give us the semi-final pairings. In the first of these Conor and Mary Middleton of Crosshaven narrowly defeated Danny and Anne Twohig of Ballincollig Com. on a scoreline of 7-6. This reversed last year’s final result between the same pairings.
In the other semi-final Tony O’Shea and Marie Triggs of Midleton had a decisive victory over Eamonn and Gertie Stroker of BEDA. The final was a tight and tense affair with the Middletons coming from behind to beat Tony and Marie on a scoreline of 9-5.
During the presentation ceremony Conna Bowls Club Captain Bernadette Feeney congratulated the prize winners and thanked everybody who helped make the tournament the success it was.
She had a special mention for main sponsors Dave Feeney and Sons, hard working secretary Noeleen Tanner, canteen supervisor Liam Hannigan, raffle sponsors, umpires and neighbouring clubs who lent mats and other equipment.
Derek Feeney then presented the prizes to the winning teams and Bernadette also presented the club’s perpetual trophy to outright winners Conor and Mary Middleton.

Castle Celtic 2 Los Zargos 4
On Saturday last at home the lads were down to play a skilful L Zargos outfit, which proved in the end what a fine side they are. As the game began we found it hard going with the away team doing all the attacking.
Then with ten minute gone we found the away team struck their first of four in this half, mind you we were lucky to be just four down at the break. Just as we thought we were getting back into the game the unthinkable happens our centrehalf lost the ball out on the right wing and from that mistake the away team’s striker went clean through on goal.
Out came stand-in keeper O’Regan, who had a fine game. He tried to two block the angle, which he did, but before he knew it the ball was coolly chipped over him 2-0 down, that goal hurt us the most.
Things got worse ten minutes before half time the Zargos striker picked up a pass from midfield and at the end of our box, with a quick turn, he hammered a left boot bullet into the bottom corner.
Regan got a hand to it but to no avail 3-0. Just on the stroke of half time, a ball in from right to the back post the smallest man plants a bullet header into the bottom corner 4-0, game over. The ref blew for half time.
A few hard words were spoken at the interval, in the meantime the first change took place. Adrian Scully Callaghan goes off injured so is replaced by Shanballymore man Brian Sheedy, who I have to say played really well after coming on.
So a quiet second half opened, 10 minutes gone and a lovely waited ball from midfield by Mick Browne to Mick Linehan’s feet, Linehan took off on a dazzling run that brought him into the box, out came the Zargos defender and upended Linehan, who let’s just say took one amazing dive in the box.
The ref pointed to spot conned. Linehan took the pen and shot into bottom left, 4-1.
Maybe a turn around was on the cards with Celtic well on top. Two more subs on Alan Sheedy for Seanie Browne and Garvan O’Callaghan. To be fair the two lads gave their best when they came on.
Now we went searching for goal number two for which didn’t have to wait long for. A nice cute ball by Relihan up the left wing for Linehan who took control. He fed a lovely ball for Biscuit who was baring down on the goalkeeper who came flying out, Biscuit hammered the ball into the roof of the net, a great finish 4-2. Now we had hope and the vibes began to echo around Celtic Park.
Then with tem minutes left, Biscuit let fly from 25 yards, only for the ball to hammer off the bar and be cleared away. As they say ‘chance gone’ and the game fizzled out.
Zargos won 4-2, their first half show proved to be the winning period. As for our guys, well if we can play two halves next Sunday, away to Macroom, we might get something from that game.
Team: R Regan, D Butler, S Browne, C Relihan, J Enright, Alan Biscuit Driscoll, Micky Whelan, Tom Foley, Scully, Mick Linehan, Mick Brown, capt. Subs used Alan Sheedy (Tevez), Brian Sheedy, Garvan O’Callaghan.
Macroom v Castle Celtic, Sunday, October 12th, 3pm kick off in Macroom Town Park. Players outside Castle Arms 1pm.

- Tallow must take out Gunners to advance -
Senior Hurling Quarter-Final
Some nine months after most teams started training we are finally into the business end of the Waterford senior hurling championship. We are down to the last eight with no second chances.
The quarter-final draw has thrown up some interesting pairings with the clash of neighbours Lismore and reigning county champions Ballyduff along with our own game against Ballygunner sure to attract a big crowd to Fraher Field on Sunday.
Mount Sion and Ballygunner have between them dominated club hurling here since ’94 taking 13 out of 14 titles. Ballyduff broke that stranglehold last year. With the elimination of Mount Sion, Ballygunner now stand alone as clear favourites with the bookies to take the county title. They are coming into good form following a convincing win over Fourmilewater in a challenge game last weekend.
Tallow and Ballygunner met recently in the Sargent Cup but little could be deduced from this encounter as Ballygunner were well below full strength on the day. The Gunners will undoubtedly see Tallow as an easy draw en route to the semi-final. Manager Colin Cunningham is happy with the way preparations have gone.
“We have a few injury worries but overall we are happy with preparations given the time lapses between games. We know we will have to lift our game but we know the lads have it in them.”
Our lads are under no illusions as to the challenge facing them. That said they have no reason to fear Ballygunner. Our recent form against Stradbally was not impressive but was far from a true reflection of the quality of our squad.
We have a seasoned bunch of players now well capable of beating Ballygunner if they hurl to form. It’s time Tallow stepped up to the mark. I’m sticking my neck out here but I believe they will. As I said our game is part of a double header with the Ballyduff/Lismore game in Fraher Field on Sunday.
Our game has a 2 o’clock start, so get the dinner over early. Your support for hurling in Waterford would be very much appreciated.

COMHBHRON
The late John Joe Murphy was affectionately known as “The Carrick Man.” The origins of this nickname are somewhat obscured through the mists of time but his brother Willie told me it came about because of John Joe’s admiration for the legendary Cork hurler Willie John Daly of Carrigtwohill.
A stylist exponent of the game himself, John Joe appreciated the quality of excellence in others. John Joe’s other great passion was point-to-point races, one shared with Willie John.
It was only fitting that the two would become friends as they met at race meetings over the years. John Joe hurled with Tallow for two years in the early 50s before the Shamrock club was formed. He hurled with distinction for the Shamrocks, mainly at centre forward in the years that followed and was renowned for his ability to pick off the points.
Tallow GAA Club extends deepest sympathy to the Murphy family on the sad passing of John Joe. I measc laochra na bhflaitheas go raibh a anam uasal.

- Defeat in league finals -
Our junior B footballers were beaten in the Cavanagh’s J.B.F.L. final by Liscarroll played in a downpour in Shanballymore last Saturday. Liscarroll were 3 points up but a great goal by Lee Tobin leveled the game.
This was followed up by a point from the same player with Mick Roche, Paul Browne, Patrick Howard, Lee Tobin, Brian Cashman, Fergal Fitzgerald, Derek O’Shea all playing well. Two points by Brian Cashman but Liscarroll scored a great goal. Half time score Liscarroll 1-6 Grange 1-3.
In the second half Liscarroll started the better team scoring two points. Grange replied with two points from Brian Cashman. Now it was Grange’s turn to up the game with Daithi Noonan getting the better of his man. Paudie Hannon who replaced the injured Lee Tobin, played well and when Brian Cashman was fouled in the small square, referee Owen Walsh awarded a penalty.
Derek O’Shea stepped up to score a goal giving the goalkeeper no chance but Liscarroll came down field to score a point from a free. With PJ Roche now on at centrefield Andrew Calnan on wing back and Kieran Kelleher on at full forward, Grange scored a point by Brian Cashman (unlucky not to score a goal), the Liscarroll goalkeeper brought off a good save.
Now a point down and into injury time Grange got two chances to level the game. With the last kick of the game K Kelleher won a great ball on our wing. The ball dropped into the square was flicked on by Niall McCarthy and it went inches wide. Following the kick out it was all over. We congratulate Liscarroll. This was a very sporting game all through.
Referee: Owen Walsh was fair with both teams in the conditions on the day. Team: M Roche, P Browne, P Howard, N McCarthy, D Cahill, C Roche, D Roche, J Roche, D O’Shea, L Tobin, G Howard, B Cashman, S Barry, F Fitzgerald, D Noonan, Subs: P Hannon, PJ Roche, A Calnan, K Kelleher.
Coach and Selectors: The club would like to thank our coach Turlough O’Rourke who did a great job this year. We hope he will be back next year and also the selectors. Liam O’Flynn, John Roche and James Roche and all the players who put in great efforts all throughout the year. We hope to see you all back next year.
