WEST WATERFORD AUTOGRASS LTD

- All-Ireland finals in Lismore this weekend -

ALL-IRELAND AUTOGRASS SERIES FINALS AND IRISH FASTEST PERSON ON GRASS 2009

West Waterford Autograss Ltd, based in Ballysaggart, Lismore, Co Waterford, will on this weekend September, 12th and 13th host the final round of the All-Ireland Autograss Series and the Irish fastest person on grass.

In its 9th year, the AIAS consists of 2 or more rounds. The 1st round of this year’s series was hosted by the Down Autograss Club, the 2nd round was in Carlow and West Waterford Autograss are hosting the finals.

There is a very big entry from the 4 Southern Ireland league clubs, which are based in Mallow, Enniskeane, Lismore and Carlow, the 2 Northern Ireland league clubs, Down and Causeway (Antrim) as well as some of the top drivers from Wales, Scotland and the UK including some of the national autograss champions fresh from their wins in the UK recently.

WHAT IS AUTOGRASS?

For those of you not familiar with autograss racing, it’s a form of motor sport, which evolved from jalopy racing in the UK in the late 1960s and made its way to Ireland over 10yrs ago.

There are 11 different classes in the sport to ensure that everyone’s budget can be adhered to. It starts with saloon cars 1,000 cc and if you have a car of this particular class then it can be driven in 3 different classes in the 1 day, in men’s class 1, in the ladies class and in the juniors class which has drivers ranging in age from 12-16, so one car could do the whole family!!

The top of the classes are single seater ‘specials’ which can either have car engines or for the more powerfully minded, can also have twin motorbike engines. This year we are again looking forward to a big entry from a relatively new class that has been introduced to autograss.

This class is ‘Formula 600’. These are single seater ‘specials’ which have a 600cc motorbike engine in them and the class has already become renowned for very close and competitive racing at low cost and are sure to bring an extra something to what is already promising to be an exciting weekend.

It was a driver from the Down Autograss Club, John Wylde who took the coveted title of The Irish Fastest Person on Grass 2008 and it was the class 4 Micra of James Brady from Carlow who took the coveted title of being the All-Ireland Autograss Series Champion of Champions.

The Irish Fastest person on Grass As well as being lucky enough to have been drawn to host the final round of the AIAS, as a huge crowd is expected from Wales, Scotland the UK and Northern Ireland as well as all the competing members of the Southern Ireland League, West Waterford Autograss will hold ‘The Irish Fastest Person On Grass’ this weekend and there is huge interest in this coveted title.

SPONSORS

West Waterford Autograss would like to express its sincere thanks to Mike Ennis of Avondhu Motor Factors who for the 4th year running has come on board as the main sponsor of this weekend.

Sponsors are very important to a club and Mike’s support is very much appreciated. Thanks must also go to one of our other sponsors for the weekend, The Clonea Strand Hotel, where the prize giving will take place on the Sunday night after racing.

INFORMATION

Racing is held over the 2 days, and with over 40 races each day and in excess of 250 racing cars, come along on whatever day suits you, or both days to the West Waterford Autograss race track situated in Ballysaggart, Lismore for plenty thrills and spills and very quick and competitive racing on Sat. 12th and Sun., 13th September.

Such a large volume of cars is expected that a change has been made to the start time and people should take note of this: racing starts at 11am each day.

Any of you spectators out there who were with us for last year’s finals in September will remember the excellent racing and top class entertainment all weekend and for any of you that didn’t make it, then please do so on any of the 2 days mentioned, it’s a great days entertainment for all the family.

On the Sunday night in The Clonea Strand Hotel, the prize-giving for both the All-Ireland Autograss Series and The Fastest Person On Grass will take place. This is always a great night and a disco will provide the entertainment into the small hours.

All club members are reminded that this is going to be a very busy weekend for the club and members are reminded that help will be needed from every angle.

For more information or directions to the track, please contact Norma Sheehy on 087-6104958 or Eamonn Sheehy on 087-6811330 or e-mail normapatrick@eircom.net or Sheehy.eamonn@gmail.com or log onto our website www.wwautograss.com

FERMOY YOUTHS RUGBY

FERMY U17 RUGBY

The U17s started the season with a hugely entertaining friendly against a strong Castleisland outfit at the Showgrounds on Saturday afternoon. In perfect conditions, the visitors started well scoring a well worked converted try.

Fermoy’s powerful pack was on top in the set pieces with Brian O’Donoghue and captain Michael Hickey showing well. A rare back line move saw the ball get to new boy Liam Brakspear who rounded the cover to score a great try under the posts. Dylan Lacey added the extras.

The game was finely balanced but Fermoy looked the more likely to score and so it was with another fast delivery out wide.

This time Dylan Rea was the scorer with a fine finish. Peter Clancy converted with a superb kick from the sideline to leave Fermoy 14-7 ahead. Castleisland now started to get back into the match with some fine passing and kicking. Their pack was beginning to compete at the breakdown and they looked dangerous with the increased possession.

From one such move their excellent No 8 went over under the posts to level the scores. With 10 minutes left, Fermoy upped the pressure. A series of forward drives resulted in a fine try for Stephen Fenton, the conversion was just wide.

All credit to Castleisland, they mounted a series of ferocious attacks on the Fermoy line but just couldn’t breach a resolute defence. Fermoy ran out 19-14 winners. Team: Rory Clancy, Liam Brakspear, William Keane, Sam O’Driscoll, Dylan Lacey, Dylan Rea, Peter Clancy, Dean Moorehouse, Caolan Gubbins, Brian O’Donoghue, Darragh Lombard, Kyron Lyons, Peter Clancy, Tom O’Donoghue and Michael Hickey (capt). Subs (all used): Ray McSweeney, David Treacy, Raymond Lau, Padraig Fitzgerald, Chad Pelley, Owen McCarthy, Conor O’Gorman and James Ryan.

One of the more pleasing aspects of the game was the number of players that showed up for the home side. The club are always looking for new talent so if you fancy giving rugby a go, come along on Monday or Thursday nights at 7:30pm for training at the showgrounds. U17 are those players born in 1993 or 1994. Contact Mark O’Driscoll on 086-1725634 for more details. Our next match is at home to Dungarvan at 7.30pm on Saturday evening under lights.

FERMOY U19 RUGBY

The U19s played 2 friendlies at home this week. They had a good win against Ballincollig on Wednesday evening. On Saturday, they beat Castleisland on a scoreline of 45 - 13.

After putting the opposition under pressure early on Fermoy conceded a penalty and a try before they got off the mark. 2 Tries by Muiris Bartley and John McCarthy along with tries by Darragh O’Reilly and Geoff Daly ensured they ran out easy winners in the end. Francis Flynn also contributed 8 points with the boot.

Dungarvan provide the opposition this coming Saturday in Fermoy at 7:30. Training this Thurday evening will be taken by Munster junior props James Mullane and Stephen Flood.

Training continues next week on Monday and Wednesday evening at 7:30. Munster Academy coach Courtney Canning will be taking Wednesday’s session. All players please make an effort to attend both sessions. New players are always welcome - contact Ger Murphy on 086 2236254 or just turn up at training.

UPCOMING FIXTURES

COURSE UNDERPASS

After months of preparation Monday, 7th September sees the commencement of our underpass. This project has been high on the works agenda of the club for some time with both young and old forced to cross the road.

The tunnels installation over the next couple of days is imperative for the health and safety of all our members and guests. While the club realises that the roadworks over the next week will be of considerable inconvenience to the local residents, on behalf of the club we would like to apologise for the difficulty this will cause.

For the second week in a row Lismore’s Paul Quinn (16) won first prize shooting a superb 63. Birdies on the first and ninth holes were the foundation for a super round. Jacksie’s Golf Society captain Tony Hennebry (22) took second spot with an excellent 64 helped no end by a quality chip in on our signature hole Rothwells.

Gross went to Cork man Micheal Fitzgerald (5) who turned four over (must be all them late night bottle feeds) but got a second wind to shoot an excellent one under par back with a birdie on the 10th followed by eight straight pars.

Third went to Cappoquin’s Eamon O’Shea (14) with a fine 66.

CLUB MIXED FOURSOMES SPONSORED BY GOLDCROP
We are now down to the final of the Goldcrop sponsored Club Mixed foursomes matchplay.

Jo Tobin and Anthony O’Rourke upset the odds when they defeated favourites Nora O’Sullivan and Pat Bennett 4 and 3 playing some top drawer golf. In the final they will face club photographer Sheila O’Leary and Dave Lonergan. Club bookie the great Michael Burke has considerable respect for Dave Lonergan’s golf and with Sheila’s highly regarded short game they’ll be very difficult to beat.

In saying that Jo and Anthony have taken some serious scalps on their way to the final and it should be noted that Anthony has won the club singles and fourball in recent years, which should give his team a significant advantage. The final is to be played by the 21st September.

CASTLELYONS JUVENILE G.A.A.

- Two wins for U16s as both U14s and U12s lose finals -

U16 EAST CORK FOOTBALL LEAGUE
(Monday, Sept 7th)
Castlelyons 4-8 Kiltha Og 4-5

Our U16 team were back in action on Monday night this time in the East Cork football league. Many of this team had already been training with St Colmans earlier in the day, so understandably were a little tired going into this game.

Castlelyons played with the wind in the first half and centre back Cian O’Leary was first on the score sheet with a fine long range point. The same player then converted a 40m free before Kiltha Og showed their class when they got two quick goals in the next 4 minutes. However, Castlelyons responded and Alan Fenton coolly slotted our first goal on the 9th minute mark.

For the remainder of the half Castlelyons enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but Kiltha Og were always dangerous on the break. Anthony Spillane added 3 points for Castlelyons in this half and Alan Fenton capped a fine opening half when he added a goal and a point to his tally.

It wasn’t all one way traffic and the Castlelyons backs especially Colm Barry, Stevie Joyce, Cian O’Leary and Thomas Carroll had to work hard to limit the flying Kiltha Og forwards. Half-time score read Castlelyons 2-6 Kiltha Og 2-2.

In the second half Kilta Og had the wind advantage and they made this tell early by scoring a goal and a point in the first 5 minutes to level the game. Castlelyons regrouped and strong play from our two midfielders Colm Spillane and Eoin Maye provided a platform for our forward division.

Anthony Spillane, Darragh Lawlor and Ronan Bransfield all worked hard in the half forward line and covered back also to help out our defence when required. Eoin Barry at full forward always showed for the ball and was the focus of several attacks.

Alan Fenton and Ronan O’Regan in the corners were full of running all through and made and took several scores. Anthony Spillane pointed in the 7th minute to restore our lead and Darragh Lawlor extended this lead when he pointed in the 9th minute. Kiltha Og reduced the deficit to one point when they scored a close in free in the 10th minute.

Castlelyons were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute, which was expertly converted by Anthony Spillane to put us ahead by 4 points. This was followed 3 minutes later by a fine move up the field, which resulted in Ronan Bransfield goaling leaving Castlelyons ahead by 7 points.

However, this is a good Kiltha Og side and they came back and scored a goal and a point before the 20th minute to leave just 3 points between the teams entering the final 10 minutes.

Castlelyons should have added to their tally in the last 10 minutes but a lack of composure in front of goals resulted in some poor wides. However, our defence held tight in the last 10 minutes especially our full back line where Sean Cronin and Liam Moroney in the corners stayed tight to their men and Colm Barry at full back made some great interceptions and clearances. Ned Daly was introduced for the injured Stevie Joyce and Ned also defended admirably.

Behind these Stephen Hickey was always alert in goals. In the end Castlelyons deserved their 3 point win and this performance was all the more noteworthy in light of the fact that this was the lads first football match in over 3 months.

U16 HURLING

Our U16 team are back in action on Saturady when they take on Bishopstown in the U16 county hurling championship. This game is due to be played in Bishopstown at 3pm.

U14 EAST CORK HURLING LEAGUE FINAL
(Sat, Sept 5th)

Castlelyons 2-11 Carrigtwohill 6-16
Last Saturday evening our U14 hurlers played Carrigtwohill in the U14 East Cork league final. Earlier in the year Carrigtwohill had beaten Castlelyons in the East Cork championship semi-final and had subsequently gone on to win the county so Castlelyons faced a huge task on Saturday evening. Carrig blitzed our lads from the start and scored 2-3 in the first 10 minutes.

Castlelyons looked a bit shell-shocked at this stage but came more into the game as the half wore on. Cian O’Flynn scored 3 points in an impressive 20 minute spell and we also had points from Shane Moroney, Stephen Hickey, Ronan Bransfield and two from Anthony Spillane.

Unfortunately Carrig added two more goals late in the half to leave the half time score reading Castlelyons 0-8, Carrigtwohill 4-5.

At the start of the second half Castlelyons opened brightly and a fine solo run from Colm O’Neill up the right saw him offload to Stephen Hickey on the edge of the square and Stephen goaled with a low shot.

Shane Moroney added a point in the 6th minute but all the time Carrig were chipping away with points of their own. A great catch and strike on the run from Brian O’Donovan netted him a fine score in the 14th minute and Anthony Spillane added another point in the 15th minute to reduce the deficit.

However, Carrig were the better balanced team and they scored two good goals in the 16th and 20th minutes to put the game out of reach for Castlelyons. Castlelyons mentors gave all the panel a run out at this stage and Stephen Hickey did goal in the 25th minute, which was no more than the lads deserved for their hard work.

However, in the end this high class Carrig team ran out convincing winners on the night on the scoreline Castlelyons 2-11, Carrigtwohill 6-16. U14 panel last Sat night: J Barry, D Varner, N Daly, S Fenton, D Healy, C Lawlor, M Geary, A Spillane, S Moroney, B Enright, R Bransfield, B O’Donovan, C O’Neill, S Hickey, C O’Flynn , Chris Murphy, D Beausang R O’Flynn and F Howard.

U12 EAST CORK CHAMPIONSHIP HURLING FINAL REPLAY
(Sat, Sept 5th)

Castlelyons 1-10 Bride Rovers 6-6
Last Saturday our U12 hurlers travelled to Watergrasshill to play Bride Rovers in the replay of the U12 East Cork final. Some injuries incurred in the initial game meant that the team had to be restructured somewhat but at least the pitch was dry on this occasion.

Castlelyons played against the breeze in the first half and this half was very similar to the drawn match in that it was end to end hurling from both teams. Rovers enjoyed more possession in midfield during this replay and they made this count early by scoring 1-2 in the opening 10 minutes.

Castlelyons lads fought back and by the 25th minute 3 close in frees from Keith O’Leary and a long range effort from Thomas Stephenson left just one point between the teams.

However Rovers finished the half stronger and scored 2 goals and a point in the last 5 minutes to take an 8 point lead into the second half. For the second game in a row we lost a midfielder through injury in the first half. Barry Murphy received a serious leg injury just before half-time after a wild pull caught him on the knee.

Due to the injuries Castlelyons mentors had to change the team again at the break, and despite the lads best efforts Rovers continued to dominate at midfield. However, Castlelyons lads battled hard in the second half.

Thomas and Keith scored 2 pointed frees in the first 10 minutes but Rovers were now enjoying more possession and scored two killer goals in the 16th and 17th minutes to extend their lead. Castlelyons lads never stopped trying and Alex Henley pointed in the 18th minute to reduce the deficit.

Keith O’Leary goaled from a close in free in the 21st minute and Mark Spillane and Keith O’Leary then scored two points that went narrowly over the bar rather than under it. Thomas and Keith scored two more pointed frees in the 23rd and 25th minutes to reduce the deficit further but what we really needed at this stage were goals.

Goals win games and Rovers got their 6th goal in the 28th minute to kill off any remote chance we had of staging a comeback.

Whether it was due to the injuries to key players or the exertions of the drawn match on the day this very young Castlelyons team never played to the same levels that they had shown throughout the summer (and also in the drawn game) and Rovers fully deserved their victory last Saturday.

Nevertheless Castlelyons played most of the two finals with what is effectively a mixture of our U11 and U10 teams and no doubt this team will be back next year competing again for U12 glory. Panel: J O’Leary (capt) J P Murphy, A Henley, S Moroney, N O’Leary, B Murphy, A O’ Neill, K O’Leary, J O’Leary, G Joyce, C Donnellan, M Spillane, B Geary, M Henley, R Ryan, I Riordan, P Varner, R Walsh and S Bargery.

U10 AGHADA EAST CORK HURLING FINAL

Our U10 hurlers have qualified for the finals of the Aghada East Cork and district hurling finals next Saturday. The lads have played 4 league games winning all 4 in this competition.

We are not sure of the opposition on Saturday or how long but we are to be on the pitch for 10.30. Cars will leave the centre at 9.45 and please make sure all players have a sandwich and drink. We expect to be home before 2pm.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to the U11 camogie team who drew with Carrigtwohill last Saturday in the East Cork semi-final.
