The Avondhu Press Newspaper was established in 1978 and covers the areas of North East Cork, West Waterford, South Limerick and South Tipperary. This successful weekly - published Thursday - boasts a readership in excess of 39,000. The first edition was a modest 4 page edition which has since grown to an average of 80 pages.

DAM BUILDERS SAVE THE DAY

The second flood to hit Fermoy in the space of two months did not have as much impact this week as initially feared -due mainly to embankments that were constructed by county council workers and Carrilion Irish Enco throughout Tuesday night.

FINAL STRAW AS FERMOY BAR FLOODS AGAIN

This week’s flooding in Fermoy marked a step towards the final straw for Avondhu Bar proprietor, Richard O’Flynn. The well known premises, severely battered and damaged by the November flood, was under water once again, just one week after renovations were completed to repair damage from the last occurrence.

TIMMY CALLS TIME ON ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER

Three-time All-Ireland medalist Timmy McCarthy from Castlelyons has called time on his inter-county hurling career. Retiring after over 10 years at the top of his game with the Cork senior hurlers, Timmy won three All-Ireland titles with the county in 1999, 2004 and 2005.

FIRE BRIGADE CALLED INTO WATER DELIVERY ACTION IN MITCHELSTOWN

Fire brigade trucks were used this week to deliver water to housing estates in Mitchelstown after numerous calls from residents to Cork County Council. Residents in Ardmhuillin contacted the county council engineers after their water supply failed at the weekend.

First it was major flooding, then sub-zero temperatures, freezing fog and snow, now it seems we should brace ourselves for the chance of more major flooding. As the thaw began this week and councils across the country warned of water shortages Met Eireann announced that gale force winds and heavy rainfall was next on the list of weather for the winter of 2009/2010.
