KILWORTH TENNIS CLUB

- Camp well underway -

This year’s camp commenced on Monday, 13th and will continue all this week under the watchful eye of tennis coach Liam O’Rourke and his assistants. There are 48 children taking part and this comprises of four groups ranging in age from 5- 14years - report and photos will follow for later publication.

While the All England championships took place, Kilworth juveniles had their own version of Wimbledon in the guise of the second singles round robin challenge! This has just finished and heartiest congratulations go to Timmy Dunne who was the outright winner, having won all of his 5 matches.

Congratulations are also due to the other 5 players who took up this challenge and played their matches with such enthusiasm - Brid Horgan, Megan Blackburn, Paul Noonan, Jamie Kenneally and Stephen Ross.

The next group are due to commence their challenge 20th July, so good luck to these players. All details on club house notice board.

Adult coaching is in its 4th week and is running smoothly with very positive feedback - 2 groups of 8 willing students are engaged in improving all aspect of fitness and tennis skills, ground strokes, developing effective serves and match play awareness and tactics.

Members can regularly be heard discussing their chopper grips and what they do with it!

Amidst all this learning, participants are having great fun and a sense of laughter is always in the air on Wednesday nights!

There had been a kick on effect from coaching to our Thursday club night, as many of those taking part in this coaching are coming out to put their newly acquired skills into practice - they may even want to impress fellow members, who knows?

For those who were unsuccessful in securing a place in this coaching block, have no fear as names are been taken for the next lot of coaching, which will take place in September - we hope this may include a morning coaching group.

Kilworth has 2 teams taking part in the South Tipp league, which is underway at present division 2 team Majella Blackburn, Ailis Murphy, Paddy Hanley and Dan Noonan and division 3 team consists of Rebecca Clarke, Clare O’Flynn, Mary Quigley Clancy and Ursula Gubbins, both teams are playing home and away matches each week.

Best of luck to these players as they represent Kilworth Tennis Club.

LISMORE YOUTH CRICKET CLUB

- U13s secure a fine win -

The season continued for Lismore’s U13 cricketers against Limerick at home last Thursday evening and, in securing a fine win the Lismore boys displayed a maturity beyond their years.

Despite being without several regular players due to holidays, Lismore displayed enough strength-in-depth to field a side that was too good for the boys from the Treaty City.

Lismore gave debuts to brothers Charlie and Nathan Bryan (nephews of Ray Bryan, a club stalwart of the 1980s and 90s), James Veale and Conor Scanlon.

On winning the toss Lismore captain Robert Cashman had no hesitation in battings, and he and Ben Hitchman got the innings off to a solid start, knocking up twelve off the first three overs until Hitchman was unlucky to be run out from a direct hit on the stumps from the outfield.

Thereafter, Cashman struggled to find a partner to stay with him, as wickets tumbled regularly. Cashman had little trouble with the bowling, however, striking five boundaries to keep the scoreboard moving along. When Cashman was sixth man out in the 14th over, he had scored 29 of the 40 runs on the board.

The tail rallied, however, and boundaries from Nathan Bryan, Iarlaith Daly and Cathal Lee brought the total to 59 for 9 at the close of the allotted 20 overs. This total was somewhat disappointing for the Lismore team, who had been eyeing at score nearer 80, but experience told them that they had to work with what they had, and if they gave a tight bowling and fielding display they still had every chance.

After a fine tea provided by Pamela Campion, Lismore took the field. Realising that early wickets hold the key to defending a small total, Lismore went on the attack, and were rewarded when Cashman clean bowled a Limerick opener with the second ball of the innings.

Cashman followed this up by repeating the feat with the other opener in his next over and Limerick were two down for ten. The number three batsman, who was looking dangerous and who had struck two boundaries, then attempted to slog Jamie Keating over point, but James Veale plucked a stunning catch out of the air and Limerick were in real trouble. Cashman bowled another batsman and at 15 for 4 Lismore were well on top.

Charlie Bryan came on his leg-breaks from the pavilion end, and, with shades of Shane Warne in 1993, pitched outside leg and took middle with his first ball in competitive cricket.

At the other end, James Veale, with his first over in competitive cricket, also struck, and Limerick were 6 down for 19, and the target looked a very long way away.

The Lismore fielding was very tight, with singles being prevented all around the field (in the first ten overs, only five singles were scored) and Benjamain Tindell gave a faultless display on his first occasion donning the gloves, with no byes or leg-byes conceded through the entire innings.

Further wickets from Fionn and Iarlaith Daly, aided by good catches from Jamie Keating and Charlie Bryan, moved proceedings towards their inevitable conclusion. Runs were added by some futile tail-end slogging, but Charlie Bryan and James Veale rounded off superb debuts by clean bowling two more Limerick batsmen to wind up the innings and give Lismore victory by 19 runs.

Man-of-the-match Robert Cashman finished with figures of three wickets for two runs, whilst Iarlaith Daly (two for three), Charlie Bryan (two for five) and James Veale (two for eleven) also had exceptional figures.

All in all it was a mature performance from the Lismore boys, who have clearly benefited from the experience of earlier games.

With competition for places hotting-up as players return from holidays, Lismore have certainly put down a marker for the other teams in the under 13 league. The team was: Robert Cashman (captain), Ben Hitchman, Jamie Keating, Fionn Daly, Charlie Bryan, Evan Mahon, Benjamin Tindell, Nathan Bryan, Iarlaith Daly, James Veale, Cathal Lee, Conor Scanlon.

LISMORE G.A.A.

- Excellent performance by Waterford minors -

Congratulations and well done to the Waterford minors on their historic win over Tipperary in the Munster final on Sunday last. It was a fantastic game and great credit is due to all concerned.

A special mention to our own club representatives namely Padraig Prendergast and John Prendergast who were members of the victorious panel.

Commiserations to the seniors but all is not yet lost as Waterford are still in the placings and hopefully luck will be on our side the next day out.

Well done to Lismore duo Dan and Maurice Shanahan who both proudly represented us on Sunday last.

BRIDE ROVERS G.A.A.

- All systems go! -

It’s a case of all systems go and all hands on deck at present with all sections of the club, juvenile, ladies and adult all having busy schedules.

On Monday last the seniors were training in the main pitch at 8 o’clock after the juveniles had finished their session. The minors were training in Pynes while our junior B hurling team were away playing Lisgoold in div 3 of the East Cork JHL. That was Monday night!

On Sunday night, the U21 hurlers played Carrigtwohill in a challenge game. On rain lashed Saturday, while the club’s U14 team were away in Kilkenny, Pairc na Bride hosted four games- a camogie match and three Co Juvenile Board U14 championship games.

Despite the inclement weather, the U21 players went ahead with their car wash in the Rathcormac Inn car park – thanks to all those who supported this venture.

The activities continue apace this weekend with minor championship and junior B hurling championship and a county board fixture in the pitch and of course Cork and Galway on Saturday night.

And don’t forget the ladies have a sweepstake night at Cork Greyhound Stadium in Curaheen Park.

U21 HURLING

In preparation for the forthcoming U21 East Cork hurling championship a game was arranged against Carrigtwohill in Pairc Seamus de Barra on Sunday evening.

The home side won by 1-14 to 1-10 after a good open game. Team and scorers; M Dooley, W O Leary, P Butler, F Collins, S Kearney, L Forde, B Collins, S Pratt, M Kearney, J Mannix, M Collins, D Dooley, G Murphy and D Lane. Subs: J O’Sullivan, E Collins and P Hornibrook. Scorers: D Dooley 1-4, S Pratt 0-2, M Collins 0-2, S Kearney 0-1 and M Kearney 0-1.

Well done to all the lads who helped out with the car wash on Saturday, all funds raised will go towards player development initiatives for the U21 panel.

JUNIOR B HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

On Tuesday night next, July 21st we are down to play Erins Own in the junior B grade hurling championship. This will be a clash between two ‘third strings’ and it’s great to be able to put out a third fifteen at adult level.

Back in the 1880s Fr Edmond Barry was delighted that the club back then was in a position to muster sufficient manpower for a third ‘21’ - twas 21-a-side at that stage. Fr Barry was a great believer in playing for the sport of it and ‘tis great that 125 years on the ‘pride of the parish’ is still important.

We face very tough opposition in Erins Own as their playing population is huge. Go for it lads, the game is fixed for 7.30 in Lisgoold.

JHL DIV 3

On Monday night, Lisgoold proved too strong for us in a league tie in Lisgoold, winning by 6 points - 1-10 to 0-7. Team: G Quill, M O’Connell, A Broderick, P Barry, N Hogan, P Butler, B Lahive, D Barry, P O’Brien, G Murphy, P O’Driscoll, J Mannix, J Bermingham, P Hornibrook and B Lynch. Subs: S O’Connor and D Quinlan.

SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

As it stands at present our senior hurling championship quarter-final v CIT is fixed for Sunday week, July 26th at 2.30 in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. The Glen Rovers v Newtownshandrum quarter-final follows at 4pm. There are several ifs and buts regarding these games however.

If Cork hurlers beat Galway on Saturday in Thurles they would be facing Waterford on 25th July so the Co SHC games would go off. A lot depends on what happens in Semple Stadium on Saturday.

The training is going well and there is a great buzz about the team. Some are dismissing CIT but they are a very strong, young and skilful side. On their results to date in the Co SHC they will probably be entitled to be favourites for the game.

We bid bon voyage to Dinny Fitzgerald who departs with his Irish Army colleagues for Kosovo next week. Congratulations to Donal and Josie on their recent nuptials. All in Bride Rovers extend best wishes to a great couple.

MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

On this Thursday evening, July 17th our minor hurlers face Cobh in round one of the league/championship. There are just 3 teams in this competition Cobh, Sars B and ourselves and each team plays the other two twice.

We played Cobh earlier in the football league and they beat us well. We won this competition last year but it will be hard to repeat this feat. The game on Thursday was fixed for Caherlag but when this venue became unavailable on Monday night a toss of a coin decided the game would be played in Cobh at 8pm.

COLLECTION

Many thanks to all who supported the recent collection for Fr Seanie Barry’s Mission in Kenya. Just over ˆ1,700 was collected and we know this sum will be of great benefit in Africa.

REGULATION PLAY-OFF

On this coming Friday night Pairc na Bride houses the final that no one wants to be in! Yes it’s the premier intermediate hurling relegation final for 2009. The ‘prize’ for the losers is the drop zone to the 2010 county intermediate hurling championship.

Since relegation was introduced in Cork a few seasons ago the reaction to it has been very mixed. On the one hand some will say that if a club loses 4 consecutive championship games in any one season then they should go down a grade.

On the other hand surely the best judges of any clubs playing strength is the club itself and the decision to drop down should be made by the club itself. One way or another the relegation regime is here in Cork now. On Friday night it’s St Catherines and Mallow who are in a struggle to preserve their premier intermediate status for 2010.

At the start of this season both of these clubs would have been high up on the bookies lists as possible winners of the PIHC title for 2009 but it is a very thin line between winning and losing. Both clubs have had spells at senior level and both have won two intermediate titles.

Mallow were county champions in 1959 and 1972 while St Catherines were winners in 1994 and again in 2004. Friday’s game is fixed for 7.30 so all club members who can are asked to be at the pitch at 6.30. We are producing a special programme for the game.

GOING TO THE DOGS

On this Friday night, July 17th there will be a mass exodus from the parish when the ladies club hold their fundraising sweepstake night at Curaheen Park Greyhound Stadium in Cork. Club members have been busy selling tickets for this venture and we wish them all the best.

CORK V GALWAY

Memories of last year’s epic encounter will come flooding back when the Leeside and Galway hurlers meet in Semple Stadium on Saturday night, at 7pm. Laois and Limerick open proceedings at 5 o’clock.

I met a daughter of Tom Semple, after whom the stadium is named, in Thurles last Friday night. She attended a Munster Council meeting in the Tipperary Institute at which she presented her late father’s 1906 All-Ireland senior hurling medal to the Lar na Pairce Centre in Thurles.

Stand tickets for Saturday nights can be pre bought while admission to the terraces will be by cash on the night. Best of luck to Brian, Timmy, Ciaran and Denis.

FERMOY ROWING CLUB

- Two gold, two silver, two bronze at the national rowing championships -

Fermoy Rowing Club had mixed luck at the national rowing championships held at the national rowing centre, Inniscarra, winning two gold, two silver and two bronze.

First victory came when James O’Mahony won the junior 14 single sculls ahead of Athlunkard, Carlow, Colaiste Iognaid and Commercial in the final.

The next gold medal was won by Hilary Shinnick also in the junior 14 single sculls beating Skibbereen, Killorglin, Cork Boat Club, Carlow and Portora.

Also in the junior 14 single sculls Zoe Sohun and Eimear Ryan finished 2nd place in both their finals. In the women’s junior 16 quad of Lesley-Anne Shinnick, Jesse Twomey, Hilary Shinnick, Marita Baker and cox Enda Gormley were beaten in the final by Portora and Cork Boat Club with Portora B in fourth place, Tribesmen in fifth and Neptune in sixth place.

The women’s junior 18 double of Jesse Twomey and Lesley Shinnick qualified for the final but finished in fourth place behind City of Derry, Skibbereen and Waterford Boat Club. In the men’s junior 14 quads both crews finished third in their finals. Crew A – James O’Mahony, Oscar Bradley, Dan Fisher and Eoin Donnelan who were coxed by Enda Gormley. B crew – Luke Myers, Ruairi Myers, Emmet Dorgan and Adam Fisher who were coxed by Scott Sheehan.

Scott Sheehan finished fourth in the junior 14 schulls, Sean Connolly finished second in the junior 14 sculls and Adam Fisher finished fourth also in the junior 14 single schulls. In the junior 18 double schulls of Owen Murphy and Evan Harris O’Sullivan, they failed to qualify for the final finishing fourth in their heat.

In the junior 16 single scull, Lachlan Martin Xavier Van Bysterveldt failed to row owing to a misunderstanding of time but was able to row in the junior 18 single sculls, however, he did not qualify for the final finishing fourth in his heat.

SENIOR EIGHT RACE

National University of Galway won the senior eights trophy by point four of a second, in this crew there were four members of Fermoy Rowing Club who represented the club at Henley Royal Regatta two weeks ago. The crew members were E. Donnelly, P. Bracken, H. Tindall and J. Wall. They were coxed by R. Cooke.

SENIOR QUADS

The senior quads was won by Carlow Rowing Club by point five of a second from University of Limerick, in the Limerick boat was also another Fermoy man Liam Rice.

The crew members of Fermoy will now take a well earned rest for the next couple of weeks before getting back into training for the Fermoy Autumn Sprints Regatta which will be held on September 13th.

The Captain, coaches and committee would like to congratulate all oars people in the championships in spite of the bad weather.

A delegation of Fermoy anglers and members of Fermoy Rowing Club met last week in Brussels with the European Commission Environment DG (Law Enforcement Section).

The journey was organised by outgoing Munster MEP Kathy Sinnott and proved to be a most productive exercise. A follow-up meeting with Minister Conor Linehan in the Dail is scheduled for today Thursday, 16th July.
