CASTLEBRIDGE CELTIC SOCCER

- Excellent coaching at soccer school -

FAI SUMMER SOCCER SCHOOL 2009

The annual summer camp took place this week in Bridesbridge and while numbers were back from previous years all the children participating had a great time and had excellent coaching from the FAI coaches working on the camp.

Thanks to Michael Looby, Sham McCarthy and Jenny who ran the camp and to Anthony, Joe and Geno for helping get the grounds ready and being around during the week to help out. We hope everyone that took part enjoyed the week and will be ready for our own under age season, which starts in September.

UNDERAGE TRAINING

Underage training will start this week on Thursday, August 20th with training for U15s and U14s at 5pm in Bridesbridge. Joe Hartnett will be looking for all players to get back in to training as soon as possible to get ready for the National Cup games, which will be coming up during the next month.

U12s and U11s will start training at 6.30pm on the same date. U8s and U10s (boys and girls) will start the following week on Friday, 28th August at 5.30pm. League fixtures should be out by next week and the leagues will start in September.

New players are welcome for all age groups and for any information on our schoolboy teams, contact either Joe Hartnett at 025-36928 or Paul at 086-8733738.

6-A-SIDE OPEN TOURNAMENT FINAL

Hunters Rest 2 Barber Shop 1
A very competitive final of the open 6-a-side took place last Friday night and the winners were the lads from Mitchelstown, who on form were the better side on the night but were pushed all the way by the lads from Glanworth. Overall the tournament was a great success and teams from all the surrounding parishes participated.

Great credit to Simon Drislane for organising the event and I am sure we will see a better and bigger competition next year.

JUNIORS START BOLGERS CUP WITH DEFEAT AT BALLYBRIDGE

Our junior team started the Bolger Cup with a game against Inch in Ballybridge. Both clubs had to opt for a neutral venue as they are putting the finishing touches to their pitches and getting them ready for the league season in September.

Again this was a very experimental team with a lot of new faces and lads who had played before but were not part of the team over the past couple of years. Inch started better and got an early lead but after that Castlebridge played decent football without ever really threatening to score.

A couple of late goals in the second half sealed a win for Inch but overall, this was a learning exercise for most of the lads and no doubt with more players due to come back over the next couple of weeks, the team will get stronger.
Junior fixture: Thursday, 20th August: Away v Watergrasshill 6.45pm. Players are asked to be at the pitch in Watergrasshill no later than 6.30pm. Weekend fixture not yet confirmed – players are asked to keep an eye out for the texts and make sure to respond when you get them!

MITCHELSTOWN LADIES GOLF

Saturday, August 15th was the biggest day of the year in the ladies’ club calendar, as lady captain, Eithne Birmingham hosted her prize. It was a tremendously enjoyable and successful day with almost 60 ladies competing in an effort to win Eithne’s beautiful prize. Compliments to Eithne on her prize table, it was a wonderful display.

Despite the very heavy rain overnight the day started bright and continued to improve with glorious sunshine by midday. The course as usual was in perfect condition and this was reflected in the scores returned

. Siobhan O’Mahony had a fantastic round of golf, especially on the back 9 where she shot a combination of birdies and pars to become the outright winner by two points, Siobhan playing off 15, returned 68 nett, with Brid Seymour (22) and Eileen Collins (23) scoring 70 nett points each for 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Gross was won by Orla Lee (10) with a score of 83 gross points.

Fourth prize went to Maire Ni Riordain (27) 72 nett, fifth to Margaret Coughlan (36) 73 nett and sixth to Emma Hanley(17) 74 nett. Best bronze was won by Noreen Anderson (26), best silver to Phil O’Sullivan (15) and best past captain to Margaret Ann Hanley (19), all with 74 nett points.

Eithne, a very popular lady captain, was delighted with the packed clubhouse which she addressed on Saturday night. She thanked all those who had helped her in any way since becoming lady captain and spoke of her great honour of being captain of Mitchelstown Golf Club. She thanked everyone for their cards, gifts and good wishes.

Eithne expressed her gratitude to her family, committee and staff for all the help and support that they offered her during this year. President, Angela Mullins and men’s captain, Gerry Riordan both paid tribute to Eithne and wished her well.

Mary Gory did an excellent job as MC for the evening and Siobhan O’Mahony, who expressed her delight in winning Eithne’s prize, thanked her playing partners along with Mossie and the boys in her acceptance speech. Eithne also presented her prizes to the winners of the Galtee Golden Girls and the men’s competitions.

The evening’s celebrations continued with a beautiful meal provided by Jennifer Hurley, followed by dancing to the great sound of Michael Collins. It was delightful to see the dance floor full all evening and many thanks to the singers who created a lovely atmosphere and a night full of memories for Eithne.

Another subject close to Eithne’s heart, is the junior foursomes team who are competing against East Cork in the Munster final in Douglas Golf Club at 3.00pm of Friday, 21st August. We wish them well and please come and support the team if possible.

The winner of the 18 hole stableford competition held on Wednesday, 12th August and kindly sponsored by Mary Kiely, was Eithne Bermingham (17) 38pts.

BLACKWATER TRIATHLON CLUB

- Mike approaching form for Blackwater Triathlon Blackwater -

TRIATHLON CLUB

With a little over a week to go to this year’s running of the Blackwater Triathlon race in Fermoy, our club athletes have been busy competing in Triathlon and road races, around Munster with great success.

One such athlete, Michael Lyons of Fermoy has continued to improve throughout the season, showing he has a big race to come from him yet this year.

Only on Friday night last, the 14th of August ,Mike travelled to the picturesque seaside town of Ardmore, Co. Waterford to compete in the Ger Wiley sponsored 5 mile road race held in conjunction with West Waterford Athletic Club.

In excess of 300 athletes came under starters orders for this one with Blackwater Triathlon Club athletes, Michael Lyons and Shane Maher well up there in the early stages.

Leading the race home in a blistering time of 24.35 minutes was Latvian athlete, Sandis Bralitis who now competes for West Waterford AC and right there coming home in a brilliant 2nd place was the mighty Mike Lyons in a very fast time of 26.39 minutes.

Rory Moloney of West Waterford was next home in 3rd spot in 26.44 minutes, with Brian Murphy of Carrick-on-Suir AC finishing 4th here in 26.49 minutes.

Celebration time for Mike Lyons and his Blackwater Triathlon Club supporters who along with Mike’s parents cheered home their hero to a brilliant 2nd place finish in this prestigious Ardmore race. Also fellow club athlete Shane Maher had a class run here to finish well up in 20th position in a quick time of 29.26 minutes.

Local Castlelyons athlete, Olan Barrett who only took up the sport a few months ago continues to improve also, finishing this tough 5 mile course, in 33.39 minutes. Mike Lyons posted a fast time to finish right there in 3rd spot also, in the recent Brian Boru Triathlon Race in Killaloe, Co. Clare where his time of 1 hour 20 minutes 29 seconds indicates a return to form for this Fermoy athlete, who is currently on a triathlon scholarship, with his brother Brendan at Kent University in England.

On Sunday, August 16th last the inaugural running of the John Hartnett Challenge in Ballyhooly was held over a tough and testing 9.5 miles off road and through forestry tracks.

A total of 56 runners came under starter’s orders for this one, with Kieran Meade of Tralee Harriers winning here in 55.29 minutes, a mere 20 seconds ahead of second place finisher, Mike Lyons in 52.49 minutes. Eoin O’Sullivan of Togher AC was 3rd in 56.24 minutes with Brian Hegarty of East Cork AC finishing in 4th place in 58.50 minutes.

Also Blackwater Tris Maurice Tobin had a huge run to finish 9th in 1.05.49 minutes. So some top form performances for Blackwater Tris Mike Lyons approaching the Blackwater Triathlon race in Fermoy on Sunday week, August 30th, commencing with the 750m swim on the River Blackwater, a race not to be missed by sports people of all interests.

Launch Night for Blackwater Triathlon on Monday next Blackwater Triathlon Club host the launch night for their up and coming race in Fermoy in The Grand Hotel, Fermoy commencing at 8.30pm sharp on Monday coming, August 24th.

GLANWORTH G.A.A.

- Harbour minors back in action -

Our minor A footballers have opened their championship campaign with a victory and a defeat. As the initial stages of the competition are played in a league format we are still well in contention to retain our North Cork title.

Team coach Liam Cotter and his fellow selectors Noel O’Neill, Paudie Walsh and Paddy Lucey will have seen what their players are capable of achieving and will have their charges well motivated to emulate last year’s success.

MINOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Glanworth 0-12 Kilshannig 0-10
We played excellent football against old rivals Kilshannig in Mallow and came away with a well deserved win. We jumped into a four point lead in the opening ten minutes and our scores came from three players who were very impressive over the hour.

Hugh O’Neill was on the mark with two points while Eoin Baker and David Pyne contributed a point each to open up the gap. In the next ten minutes Kilshannig came right back into contention and the sides were level with four points each after twenty minutes.

Ross Murphy scored a beautiful point to edge us in front and the ever dangerous Hugh O’Neill’s third point put us further ahead. David Pyne was fielding magnificently at centre-field and using his possession very intelligently. His midfield partner Martin Jackson got due reward for his hard work when he pointed after a surging run.

An injury time Kilshannig point left us leading by seven points to five at the interval. We were rather unlucky not to increase our lead in the opening five minutes of the second half as we dominated proceedings.

Francis John O’Flynn, who made an excellent return to action after sustaining a serious injury, pointed to give us a three point margin. Kilshannig closed the gap to a point before our ace marksmen Hugh O’Neill and David Pyne each drilled over a point.

We now had to withstand a period of sustained Kilshannig pressure which gave them three points to level the game.

In this sequence of play, centre-back Sean O’Keeffe and his wing-backs Johnny Magnier and Thomas Condon were heroic. William Jackson was cool and authoritative in goal and we did well to weather the storm. We regained the upper hand and the brave efforts of Sean Finn in securing hard earned possession was of immense importance.

David Pyne put the seal on a superb individual performance by landing the two points that gave us our winning margin. Team: William Jackson, Philip Jackson, Shane O’Riordan, Padraig Dineen, Thomas Condon, Sean O’Keeffe, Johnny Magnier, David Pyne (0-4), Martin Jackson (0-1), Ross Murphy (0-1), Eoin Baker (0-1), Francis John O’Flynn (0-1), Hugh O’Neill (0-4), Sean Finn, David O’Sullivan. Subs used: Eamonn Gallagher, Brian Roche, Callum Robinson.

MINOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Glanworth 0-10 Clyda Rovers 1-9
In the game against Clyda Rovers we did not play with our usual fluency or consistency. But we were still very competitive over the hour and had we capitalised on the chances that we created, we would have emerged as victors.

We opened proceedings very positively when Ross Murphy, who had a very good game, slipped over a neat point after fine approach work from Sean Finn. A pointed free from David Pyne doubled our lead and we were now playing good attacking football.

David O’Sullivan was on hand to raise a white flag after Sean Finn and Hugh O’Neill combined well to set up the chance. David was injured in the Kilshannig game but he defied the pain barrier to put in another successful performance. T

he big hearted Sean Finn won possession while under severe pressure and slotted over a trademark point. A Clyda goal against the run of play plus two quick points edged them ahead. We had squandered a few good chances at this stage while Clyda seemed to be making better use of their limited possession.

Dave Pyne steadied us with a good point and the ever willing Francis John O’Flynn clipped over an equalising point. Two late Clyda points saw us trailing on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-6 at half time. We opened the second half brightly when Francis John O’Flynn scored another lovely point.

Once again we were causing difficulties for the Clyda defence and our persistence was rewarded by two well taken points from David Pyne. We could have added to our total at this stage of the game but were somewhat overtaken by four Clyda points.

The final score of the game came when the stylish Dave Pyne pointed. But we were two points adrift when the final whistle called proceedings to a halt. While we were disappointed not to win there were some more than enough positives to make us confident of progressing to the final stages of the championship.

There is real quality in this squad and coach, Liam Cotter will not be daunted by this setback. Team: William Jackson, Philip Blackburne, Shane O’Riordan, Padraig Dineen, Thomas Condon, Sean O’Keeffe, Johnny Magnier, Martin Jackson, David Pyne (0-5), Ross Murphy (0-1), Eoin Baker, Francis John O’Flynn (0-2), David O’Sullivan (0-1), Sean Finn (0-1), Hugh O’Neill. Subs: C Robinson, E Gallagher, J Foley, B Roche, E Rice.
