With the cocaine abuse that is endemic in Ireland making the headlines of late, parents will be relieved to learn that a new drugs awareness enterprise has started in Mitchelstown. The initiative is a joint venture between youth development group Foroige, the Southern Regional Drugs Taskforce of the HSE and with support from the Mitchelstown Lions Club.
The Mitchelstown Community Based Drugs Initiative (CBDI) will aim to enable young people between the ages of 12 and 23 in the area who misuse drugs or are at high risk of alcohol or drug abuse to involve themselves in their own development, including taking positive steps to cope with and alleviate problems in their lives linked to drugs and alcohol issues.
Objectives of the projects include identifying those at risk, to utilise intervention based approaches to tackling the problem, to help deliver accurate information on the subject, to enable young people to develop life skills and offer support to families where children have drug or alcohol abuse problems. The project can be accessed either by referral through a concerned person or agency or self referral.
The Mitchelstown CBDI is non-judgemental, confidential, informal, relaxed, flexible and free and can be found at 1 Thomas Street in Mitchelstown. Neil Halligan of the CBDI can be contacted at 025-41511, mobile number 086-0439702 or by e-mail at neil.halligan@foroige.ie.
