WATER CHARGES NOTHING NEW FOR MANY SCHOOLS

A survey has shown that the recent high profile issue of water charges has been a reality for many schools in the locality for years. The controversial topic has been in the limelight following revelations that some schools may face the prospect of paying up to ˆ10,000 a year in usage fees should plans for imposing further water charges be brought in across the country.

Marian White, principal of Ballylanders National School this week said that the school has yet to receive a bill, but expects one from the council in the near future. However, having spoken to other principals in the area The Avondhu has learned that many schools already face extensive fees for water supply.

Angela Hennessy, principal of Kilfinane National School says both staff and pupils are conscious of water usage as they have been metered all along. It is not only the primary schools that have been paying fees, as principal of Loreto Secondary School in Fermoy Mary Ryan admitted she was slightly surprised at the recent controversy surrounding water charges, given that her school has paid fees for the past two years.

She added that these fees prove to be a “great burden” on the school and that the cost comes from the students’ capitation grant, revealing that Loreto paid ˆ2,904 between September, 2006 and August, 2007.
