BURNCOURT CELTIC F.C.

- Tense clashes for Celtic-

BILLY TATTEN MEMORIAL FINAL FIRST ROUND

Tom Tatten XI 2 Galbally 2
Galbally progressed 5-4 on a penalty shootout. The pick of the matches in the first round were the clashes between Tom Tattan xi v Galbally and Vee Rovers v Clonmel Celtic B.

The first match got off to a tense start with Ian Fitzgibbon opening the scoring from close range for Tom Tattan xi midway through the first half from close range.

However in the 2nd half Galbally took control and equalised early in the half and with 65 mins gone Galbally grabbed the lead with a lovely strike from 25yds. From then on it was all Tom Tattan xi and under pressure yielded the equaliser with 15 mins left with a crisp low drive from 12yds into the bottom corner.

In the last few minutes Tom Tattan xi piled on the pressure and created 3 very good chances but failed to take them. In a tense shootout Galbally edged it 5-4.

Vee Rovers 3 Clonmel Celtic B 3 (Rovers progres on penalties)
In the final 1st round match Vee Rovers played Clonmel Celtic B. It was a highly entertaining game with good soccer being played by both sides. However, it was Vee Rovers who had the better of it by half time putting themselves into a 3-1 lead.

Early in the 2nd half the Clonmel team put pressure on the Vee Rovers goal and got their reward with an early goal. From then on the game ebbed and flowed until Celtic dramatically grabbed a last minute equaliser. However, Vee Rovers kept their composure to go through on penalties.

BILL TATTEN MEMORIAL CUP FINAL

Burncourt Celtic 4 Vee Rovers 2
Burncourt Celtic retained the Bill Tattan Memorial Cup with a performance of great heart and plenty of skill to overcome near neighbours Vee Rovers who contributed greatly to a highly entertaining game played in terrible weather.

It was Vee Rovers who got off to the perfect start when a deflected shot ended up in the back of the net to give them the lead. This seemed to spur Celtic into life with Eamon and James English starting to win the midfield battle and creating chances going forward.

On the 20 minute mark James English won possession off the Rovers defence to feed the ball through for Tom Conway to finish smartly into the bottom corner. Celtic’s belief grew from here and they added two more goals before the break with Danny Walsh finishing off a great passing sequence and Alan Carter with a cracker from 25 yds into the top corner.

Rovers regrouped at half time and applied pressure in the 2nd half but found it hard to break down a resolute defence marshalled by James Mulcahy. However, after 70 minutes Rovers got the break they were looking for when a deflected free kick brought them back to 3-2, game on.

Again Celtic responded to the loss of the goal by attacking and it yielded dividends when a corner was only half cleared and fell to Brian Irwin to smash the ball home from 25yds, thoroughly deserved for a player who had a brilliant game. Burncourt Celtic saw out the remaining minutes with some fine defending by Paudie Fitzgerald in particular and some commanding goalkeeping from Michael Houlihan.

Overall the tournament was a thoroughly enjoyable one with some good soccer played and terrific goals. The tournament has grown from four to eight teams this year and this greatly contributed to a competitive and a highly entertaining event. The only downside was the poor weather conditions.

Despite this all teams played with great skill and commitment. We would like to thank all the teams that took part and their mentors, players and supporters for contributing to an exciting tournament.

I would like to thank fellow committee members and all the Burncourt Celtic players for their help, and especially our manager Pat Enright for his huge input into the event. The club would also like to thank all the match officials for contributing to the sporting manner in which the games were played.

I would especially like to thank the Tattan family for putting up the trophies for the tournament, they have been at all the matches, encouraging everyone involved. Since its inception in 2005 it has grown and developed. This is a credit to Thomas Tattan and his mother Bridie.

We all look forward to the shield final between Tom Tattan xi and Clonmel Celtic B (date to be confirmed).

Finally I would like to wish all teams best of luck for the coming season and an injury free one..

BALLYHOOLY TENNIS CLUB

- Two successful tournaments -

The club has just finished two very successful tournaments. The first being the under 12 contest for the John Ryan Trophy which was won by Jamie Collins who defeated Calum McClean. It was a good contest with some great tennis being played. Conor Donegan just overcame Peter O’Driscoll to win the plate in the same tournament.

The men’s tournament was won by Michael Daniels and his partner Enda McGrath who beat Jerry Linehan and Liam Dineen. Our thanks to our sponsors Charlie McCarthy Insurance for this.

The ladies tournament was sponsored by Lancome of Mellerick’s Pharmacy. A very competitive final with Kitty Collins and Sandra Bohan just beating Ann Feehan and Evelyn Hartnett in a tiebreak! We were blessed with lovely weather for each tournament, which added to everyone’s enjoyment.

The under 14 tournament is on next Friday 3.30 so good luck to them. Thanks to all who organised all tournaments.

GLENVILLE GOLF CLUB

- Wet, wet, wet! -

On Sunday, August 17, Mitchelstown golf course was the venue for our golf outing. With 24 names on the list, RTE and TV3 weather presenters were under close scrutiny for their forecasts. Unfortunately for us they got it right this time.

At 12.30pm Sunday, teams of 3 took to the course in “stay at home” weather conditions. The battle began in swamp like conditions. From flying clubs to sunken golf balls scoring was bound to be low.

Some of our leading golfers are out due to illness, so we wish a speedy recovery to all. After 4 hours of exciting and challenging golf, players returned to the clubhouse for a hot meal and prize giving. With our scorekeeper James Curtin and captain Ger O’Herlihy setting the scene for presentations.

In 4th place (for the umpteenth time) Bernard Doolin, in 3rd place our captain Ger, 2nd place Petie Curtin and 1st place Barry McGurkin. Prizes also went to Davy Doyle and Enda Duggan and also new faces for prizes to Bart Dunlea, David O’Driscoll and Diarmuid Hickey.

Our next outing will take place on September 28, in Kanturk. Look forward to seeing you all there.

GRANGE FERMOY ATHLETIC CLUB

- Athletes enjoy a fine run at the Clogheen 5km road race -

CLOGHEEN 5KM ROAD RACE, SPONSORED BY ELVERY SPORTS

The Clogheen 5km road race took place on Thursday, 31st July last. The weather leading up to the race was appalling, with torrential rain being experienced all the way down to Clogheen and then, as so often happens at a road race, the skies cleared and the race got underway in near perfect conditions.

A very small field of 70 athletes chose to ignore the weather forecast and were rewarded by a very fine run around the scenic village of Clogheen. Support from local spectators was very welcome, as were the refreshments after the run.

It wasn’t an easy course, with a good few hills to contend with, but the winner Sergiu Turea of Clonliffe Harriers, covered the distance in a great time of 15.36, with Grange Fermoy Athletic Club’s Timmy Murphy taking 2nd place in 15.54. Shane Mullaney of Thurles Crokes posted a time of 15.57 for 3rd place.

Other Grange Fermoy Athletic Club athletes competing were Michael Lyons, home from his studies at the University of Kent, finishing 4th in 16.17, Brian O’Connor in 16th place in 17.54, just ahead of the club’s Shane Maher 17th place in 17.57.

In the women’s race, Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane took top honours, finishing the challenging course in 17.51, with Madeline Dorney of Thurles Crokes finishing 2nd in 18.31.

Grange Fermoy Athletic Club had four competitors in the women’s race, with their top female athlete Mary Sheehan first home for the club and winning the O50 category in the process, Terry Hennessey and Mary Fitzgerald putting in great efforts, and club veteran Maggie Dunne winning her O60 category. Well done to all competitors and thanks to organisers and officials who made it such an enjoyable event.

FORTHCOMING RACES

The next race under BHAA race will be the PTAA 5km in Togher on 3rd September, commencing at the earlier time of 7.30pm. This is a very nice race, easy on the legs at and well worth doing. Details from Seamus Casey on 021 4885655.

The final race in the Ballycotton Summer Series takes place in Ballycotton itself, on Thursday, 28th August, also commencing at 7.30pm. There is likely to be a huge entry for this race. So it’s advisable to arrive early in plenty of time to register.

This is the time when all athletes who have completed the series will receive their commemorative plaque, and the moment we realise the pain and suffering wasn’t in vain!

John Desmond’s running blog Anyone wishing to find out stacks of information on the Cork running scene should check outhttp://corkrunning.blogspot.com, for race information, weather predictions, directions and race results. It’s probably the most comprehensive site there is about the running events in County Cork and well worth a look.

TRAINING RUNS

The two long races coming up are the Cork to Cobh 15 mile race on Sunday, 5th October and the Dublin City Marathon on Monday, 27th October. Maurice Tobin is in charge of Grange Fermoy Athletic Club senior training schedules and he is always on hand to help runners new to the game.

You can contact him on 025 32101 after 7pm for further information.

FERMOY G.A.A. PITCH AND PUTT CLUB

- Chairman defies the weather! -

On Friday night and again early on Saturday last, it looked very likely that the chairman’s prize would have to be cancelled but whatever John did to please the man above, it did manage to go ahead!

Saturday wasn’t a perfect day especially for the players who had opted for an early start, but later on through the afternoon, the clouds parted and the sun even managed to make the occasional appearance, much to the delight of the later participants.

Our grounds man, John Richards was tireless in his efforts to keep all parts of the course in good order and the greens were really in great condition after all the rain. In fact, John was on the job at six o’clock on the relevant morning and he received due praise from all quarters for the way the course was presented.

At one stage during the chairman’s speech, John was on his feet with excitement as it seemed from the content that he might even be in line for a pay rise, however, this was a misunderstanding and John soon returned to teaching his sorrows to swim in a pint of beer.

Club captain JJ Quirke in his address said that John O’Keeney was one of the great officers and having been a member for the relatively short period of seven years, he had put in a lot of work from day one.

He said that John had risen through the ranks from player right through all positions in the governing body to the position which he has held for three out of the last four years, that of chairman. In this capacity, John O’Keeney stands alone in the time and effort, which he has put in for the greater interest of the club.

When we see John at the clubhouse during a competition, it’s easy to forget that his participation doesn’t end there, he spends many hours in discussion with different people and makes numerous phone calls and attends meetings with the GAA executive, all in the interest of the club.

Mentioning the GAA, John was lavish in his praise for Brian Shinnick for his help and willingness to be of assistance to the club in any way he could during John’s tenure.

Brian was always on hand if we had a problem and always found an answer to it. John said that Brian would soon have new competition in his own business, with some new outlets opening up in close proximity to his shop and reminded us that we should remember how loyal Brian has been to our club in the past.

Perhaps it is now time to appreciate that loyalty when doing the weekly and incidental shopping. How true this is especially now when recession is biting and times are getting tough for local retailers who have given great service to the community in the past.

This writer concurs completely with the sentiment expressed by the chairman (and I’m not after his job) so remember the man who remembered you when spending your euro in the run up to Christmas, which will begin soon enough. We thank you Brian for your continuing concern.

JJ thanked John for his assistance during JJ’s time as captain; he said that John had been a great help to him on many occasions. He then went on to comment on the prizes on offer for the competition, JJ said that these were magnificent and we all agreed with that.

The prizes were exquisite and anyone who was lucky enough to win one would surely treasure it forever. So let’s get down to the results.

The chairman’s prize for the juveniles, which was held on Thursday evening, was won by Michael Shane McDonagh, well done to him. The Friday evening fourball went to Nell McCarthy and Dinny Fanning on a score of 39 nett, in second place Tilly Noonan and Willie Cahill on 41.5 nett.

The mixed was won by Frances Tobin and Jim Bartley on 42.5 nett and the gross to Jim Doyle and Robbie Donovan with a score of 45. The overall winner in the main event was John Cahill with a great score of 91 points; Noel Doyle was second also on 91 points and was only beaten on the back nine by John.

Overall gross went to Darren Quirke on 85, 3rd nett James Noonan on 90 and 4th nett Ned Rice also on 90, senior nett Declan Freeman on 88 and senior gross Damien Burke on 84.

Inter nett Eamon Joyce on 89 and inter gross Dinny Fanning on 80. Junior nett to Dave Cowell on 86 and junior gross to Jim Noonan on 68.

In the ladies, grade 0-10 nett went to Sharon Bowes on 84 and 0-10 gross to Liz Ducey on 70. The 11-18 nett went to Norma Buckley on 85 and the 11-18 gross to Theresa O’Keeffe on 59. The gents first 18 was won by Pa Daly on 45 and the second 18 by Jim Barry on 46.

First 18, ladies Sonia Quirke on 44 and second 18 to Annette Roche on 42 and the hole in one went to Mark O’Keeffe. So ended a great day and a great event for a great man. Here’s to 2009.

Also on the same day (24) the National mixed foursomes qualifiers will take place at the Collins course.

ARAGLIN GAA

- Countdown to Saturday -

The words county final have a nice ring to them and regardless of the grade securing a place in a county decider is always a huge occasion for any club. A good run in North Cork, victory over Liscarroll in the final and 2 fine performances against Bere Island and Kilbrin have brought the footballers to this juncture.

As useful teams like Churchtown and Ballyhooly (both junior ‘A’) have found out winning a junior ‘B’ county is not an easy task. Argideen Rangers are our opponents in Saturday’s final. Those who saw them beat Ballyphehane in their semi-final went home impressed by a big, strong, rangy team who are well capable of picking off plenty of scores.

With more or less a clean bill of health Araglin should be in a positive frame of mind ahead of this final especially if we repeat the work rate and intensity of the Kilbrin game. This team have shown themselves to be very dogged in tight games and our discipline has been excellent all year.

Morale is high, we have good people looking after the team and if we’re within striking distance at half time then anything is possible. The team, under Tony White are as prepared as they can be and everyone at the club wish the boys the very best on Saturday.

GREAT SUPPORT

Araglin teams have never wanted for support and while we won’t fill Pairc Ui Rinn you can be sure we’ll have an enthusiastic and vocal following in Cork. With our underage structure at a low ebb the good year we’ve enjoyed so far has been all the more important.

We started a training fund to bring in a few euro for the team and the response has been brilliant. Individuals and local business people have given generously and we thank them all sincerely.

This level of support is really heartening and it would be great to have a county trophy to show for our efforts.

LOTTO NEWS

The weekly lotto is a regular, consistent and valuable source of income for the club. Those who oversee it are doing a very good job. There was another big crowd in Christy’s last Thursday night to see the numbers 05, 07, 17 and 19 drawn. No one succeeded in matching these numbers.

The lucky dip prizes of ˆ20 each went to Frances Kenneally, Barnahown; Hannah Twomey, Coolmohan and Caoimhe Hyland. Anyone interested in playing the lotto can get tickets from club officers or from Christy’s or Emmet’s. Next week’s jackpot is worth ˆ4,500.

On the subject of GAA weekly lotto’s we note that the Castletownroche lotto is now over ˆ10,000. Impressive as this might sound it’s a long way behind the Glanmire GAA lotto which was won last week after rolling over for an incredible 80 weeks, the amount scooped was ˆ16,800.

ARAGLIN RIDERS TRIUMPH IN R.D.S.

The Araglin inter hunt team had a great win in the RDS recently. Locals, Sean Moher and Liam Russell joined forces with Tina Burke and John Reidy to take this prestigious event. Well done on a magnificent victory.

FIXTURE

Saturday, August 23 in Pairc Ui Rinn at 6.30pm, junior ‘B’ football county final Araglin v Argideen Rangers.
