- Disappointment for Castlelyons camogie girls-
JUNIOR C COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Castlelyons 1-3 Kildorrery 1-6
Castlelyons played Kildorrery in the final of the junior C county camogie championship on Friday evening. The game was played at Rathcormac and pitch and weather conditions were excellent.
Castlelyons had a poor first half. Nothing was scored from play, the only score was a point put over by Melissa O’Sullivan from a free in the seventh minute of stoppage time. But the defence kept Kildorrery to just three scores, one goal and two points, during the same period.
The second half was a different matter. Castlelyons played much better and dominated most of the play.
However, they failed to convert this into enough scores to win the match. There were several chances at getting goals in both halves, but they did not happen. After Marie T Murphy got a goal in the sixth minute, the chance was there for Castlelyons to turn the game around.
The girls worked hard for the scores but failed to finish. A point in the second minute of extra time secured final victory for Kildorrery. Well done to the whole panel of players for their dedication to training during the year. They certainly did the club proud. The league cup is still there to be defended.
Well done and thanks to the management team, Colm, Seanie, Anthony and Tom, who worked very hard at training and coaching during the year. Team: Michelle Barry, Mairead Barry, Elaine Phelan, Miriam Howard, Melissa O’Sullivan (0-1), Niamh Barry, Aibhin O’Sullivan, Sheila O’Shea, Christine Carroll (0-1), Aine O’Brien, Marie T Murphy (1-0), Teresa O’Connor Emily Sexton (0-1), Catherine McAuliffe and Karen Murphy. Subs used: Patricia Carroll and Isabel Fenton, Subs: Trish Coughlan, Sinead O’Connell, Louise Spillane, Marie Wilson, Paula O’Regan, Lorraine Walsh, Emma Cotter, Catherine Hoare, Aine Maye, Aoife Shinnick and Louise Crowley.

- U8s contest another hurling blitz -
Our U8s travelled to Lisgoold on Saturday 19th for a hurling blitz. The other teams represented were Lisgoold, Fr O’Neills and Aghada.
We had two teams, one with the older boys and one with the younger boys. Both teams played their equivalent group from Lisgoold in the first game. As with all the games we played against Lisgoold these proved to be two great games.
We came out on top in the older game but our younger boys, a number of whom were on their first outing, were overpowered by the Lisgoold boys. We then played Fr O’Neills. This was the first time we’ve met the boys from Ballymacoda at this age, but this didn’t put our boys off.
Both our teams got off to great starts, with the younger team going ahead from a superb goal from Ronan O’Connell from a free.
However, the younger team from Fr O’Neills go the better of our boys in the end, while our older boys kept their lead throughout the game. Our last games were against the Aghada teams. These proved again to be a tough opposition in both games.
We led at half-time in the older game, but in the second half the game changed completely for us, from an attacking game to a completely defensive game, resulting in Aghada coming away with a double victory over the boys from Rathcormac.
Well done to all the boys who played on the day, in particular the new boys and thank you to Lisgoold for running such a successful event. The players representing Bride Rovers were: Kieran Kearney, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Oisin Roche, Jack Ryan, Craig O’Callaghan, Riain Pegler, Dylan O’Leary, Darragh O’Sullivan, Cormac Finn, Adam Walsh, Shaun Knox, Ronan O’Connell, Michael Quinlan, Seamus Aherne, Tomas Macak, Fionn McAuliffe, Evan Murphy, Matthew Quinn, Tiernan McAllister, Gearoid White, Tiernan McCarthy, Edmund Cashman, Evan Buckley, Joseph O’Brien Whitmarsh and Eoghan O’Leary. We would like to wish Cian Hogan a speedy recovery from his recent injury.
U13s SHOW GREAT CHARACTER
On Tuesday 15th we played the first round of the U13 championship against our neighbours Watergrasshill. It was the first time most of our lads played in the B grade championship so we knew going into the game we were going to find it tough.
As soon as the game started the ‘Hill put us under pressure and started to score with ease and from our puck outs we found it hard to get hold of the ball. With that a few changes were made but the damage was done but at least the lads started to contain the ‘Hill a little bit and started to put a couple of points on the board.
At half-time we were way behind but it was nice to see some of the younger lads were able to hold their heads up and as the second half started we began to make some goals and points of our own to make the scoreline a little more respectable. By the final whistle the scoreline was Bride Rovers 4-4 Watergrasshill 7-11.
The club would like to wish Watergrasshill good luck as they progress to the next round of the championship.
- Nicola Dowling and Ciara O’Brien Memorial Tournament a great success -
During the 2008 / 2009 hockey season our club was devastated by the sudden and untimely deaths of two gifted players and friends, Nicola Dowling and Ciara O’Brien.
As a tribute, Fermoy Hockey Club held the inaugural Nicola Dowling and Ciara O’Brien Memorial Tournament in Fermoy on Saturday, 19th September. We invited 6 clubs from the divisions we play in to attend the tournament; Church of Ireland, Dungarvan, Belvedere, Bandon, Tipperary and Limerick, we also fielded two teams.
The teams were split into two pools with each team playing 3 round robin matches and semi-finals for either the cup or plate. The standard of play was very high, and while drizzle descended on Fermoy in the morning, we were bathed in sunshine for the afternoon.
Fermoy II lost to Church of Ireland 1-0 and to Dungarvan 2-0 while they drew 0-0 against Belvedere in their round robin matches. They then faced Limerick in the plate final after defeating Bandon 1-0 with a great goal from Louise Ahern.
Unfortunately they were denied the plate title, which, after a scoreless draw, ended 4 -3 after the 5 standard flicks and two sudden death flicks. Fermoy I drew with Bandon 0-0 and Tipperary 0-0 then defeated Limerick 1-0 with Trish Fitzpatrick scoring in their round robin matches.
They went on to draw 1-1 with Church of Ireland in their cup semi-final, with a goal from Nicky Howard equalising in normal time and they progressed to the cup final on flicks, 2-1.
Fermoy I had to go through another round of penalty flicks to decide the cup final against Dungarvan when it ended in a scoreless draw. Our girls stepped up to the challenge and won 2-1 on flicks.
The tournament came to a close with a presentation ceremony where both the O’Brien and Dowling families presented the perpetual plate to Limerick, and fittingly the perpetual cup to captain for Fermoy I, Aine O’Brien.
The club would like to extend a huge thanks to all those involved in the day: to Fermoy Community Sports Project, Mary Ryan and Loreto Secondary School, to Fermoy Print and Design for sponsoring our signs, to Bart Arnold Communications Ltd for the PA system and to VanWich for providing the refreshments.
Thanks to all the clubs and their coaches who travelled to Fermoy, along with our own coaching team of John Moloney and Therese Holland. Thank you also to the umpires who gave their time so freely and helped the day run smoothly.
A big thank you as well to those who made sandwiches, brought cakes and helped to keep the tea and coffee flowing! As you can imagine organising an event such as this takes a lot of planning and organising, so the last thanks goes to everyone who helped out behind the scenes on Saturday and the Fermoy Hockey Club committee.

INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
In intermediate football we played Dungarvan in Dungarvan on Tuesday last, September 15th to determine semi-final pairings. Having been seventeen points in arrears 0-2 to 3-10 at half-time a better second half performance reduced the deficit to twelve points at full-time with the final score Ballyduff 1-8 Dungarvan 3-14.
Team: Diarmuid Flynn, Johnny Barry, Kevin Moroney, Michael Ahern, Liam McNamara, Shane Feeney (0-1), Maurice McNamara, Brian Kearney (1-6), Seamus Mills, Edward Molumphy, Mike Drislane, Colin Keane, Eoin Hogan (0-1), Aidan Feeney and Kevin Martin. Subs: Stephen Molumphy for Michael Ahern, Brian Flynn for Eoin Hogan and Kieran Keane for Kevin Moroney.

- Great weekend for Celtic -
It was a great weekend for Kilbehenny Celtic. On Saturday night we had our very successful table quiz in The Three Counties. There was a very good turnout for this much needed fundraiser. Even though some of the questions got a few moans from the participants everybody enjoyed the night.
Many thanks to all our sponsors of the spot prizes on the night. The Three Counties Bar, Spillane Bros Transport, John and Mary O’Gorman, McGrath’s Post Office Kilbehenny, Lane’s Shop Anglesboro, Galtee Gaels GAA, Galtee View Bar, Tom Noonan Carpentry, Centra Mitchelstown, Farrell’s Bar, Bill and Marion O’Donnell, Auntie Mae’s Bar, Meaney’s Bar, Walsh’s Bar, Dan Casey’s Bar, Noreen Cleary, Shreelawn Oil, Tom McGrath Taxi and Mace Shop/Fermoy Nissan.
On Sunday morning we played host to Clerihan in Ballinatona in the TSDL league div 4. This was our 1st home game in our well prepared grounds many thanks to John Joe Kearney who has once again given us the pitch this season.
Clarihan are one of the top teams in the division and we knew we would have to be on top of our game to get something from it. We started well with Holly and Niall doing well up front.
The defence was dealing with any ball that came their way. We took the lead via Holly and then Brian Mullins added a 2nd before the break. In the 2nd half the visitors put on the pressure but the defence and Mick Jones in goal saw off any problems. Pavel made it 2 goals in 3 games near the end to wrap up a fantastic victory for Kilbehenny Celtic.
It has been a good start for Kilbehenny Celtic with 2 wins from 3 games. This Sunday we are at home again this time to Cahir Park B. So let’s hope for another good result. Team: Mick Jones, Denis O’Dwyer, Johnny O’Mahony, Thomas O’Mahony, Paul Moriarty, Brian Mullins, Pavel, Brian O’Gorman, Tommy O’Dwyer, Holly and Niall O’Mahony. Subs: Keith O’Mahony, Johnny Cleary and Tommy Fitz.

- Munster gold for Carraig na bhfear AC athletes -
The John Buckley Sports/Cork Half Marathon, hosted by St Finbarr’s Athletic Club, was held on Sunday, September 13th last. This race, now in its 20th year, has seen its popularity rise year on year, culminating in a record entry of 550 athletes competing in Sunday’s race.
There’s no doubt about it, this is a very tough course, all around the Blarney and Waterloo area, and conditions on the day were hot, but there were plenty of drink stations to refresh the runners, and the trees along the quiet country lanes gave shelter from the heat.
There was plenty of crowd support all along the way and this was encouraging to many a flagging spirit!
On the day, West Waterford AC’s Sandis Bralitis was a worthy winner of the men’s race, coming home in a time of 70:40. This was his first attempt at this race, and he was delighted with his win.
Second home was John Cleary of Ferrybank AC just 36 second behind Bralitis, with Cork city marathon winner Michael Herlihy of North Cork AC a close 3rd. Michael Herlihy’s fine performance in Sunday’s race finished off a great weekend for him, as he was the winner of the inaugural Dingle half marathon held on the previous day.
Carraig na bhFear AC had a fine team of athletes competing at Blarney, with the club’s Colin Merritt, posting a fabulous 4th place, to add to his impressive 2nd place in the Cork city marathon in June, and 1st in the tough Donoughmore 7 in July of this year.
Next home for the club was Philip Coffey, 1.30.19, Martin Hurley, 1.40.55, Tony Dunne 1.54.50 and Michael Daly in 1.55.07. In the women’s race, Claire McCarthy of St Finbarr’s AC was 1st home, in a time of 80.53, with Angela McCann of Clonmel 2nd home in a time of 87.38.
Carraig na bhFear had two women competing, with Cliona Hurley finishing in a good time of 1.59.47, and the club’s veteran athlete Maggie Dunne winning the women’s O/60 category in a time of 2.06.01.
The Munster half marathon championships were incorporated in the John Buckley Sports/Cork Half Marathon on Sunday, 13th September, and Carraig na bhFear AC athletes achieved success, with Colin Merritt taking 1st place in the championships to win gold, with a 2nd gold medal for 1st place in the O35 category, while club veteran Tony Dunne won gold for 1st in his O65 category and Maggie Dunne won gold for 1st in the women’s O60 category.
Well done to all athletes who competed on the day and thanks to the organisers, stewards and many helpers for making this such a fabulous day.
