- Juniors get vital three points at last -
The stakes were high for the juniors when they took on Cappoquin in the league last Sunday in Bridesbridge. Another game without a win would surely put their premier status under pressure.
After an even enough first 20 mins good work by man of the match Declan Sexton down the right and a great cross to the far post gave Juranek a chance to get back on the scoring list and he didn’t miss.
Celtic could have had two more but Cappoquin hit back to level it at 1-1 before the break. The second half was again fairly even and with all subs used was still even with 15 mins to go when out of nothing Declan Sexton shot home a great goal from the edge of the box.
Minutes later Jean did very well to beat the offside trap and crossed for Adam Byrne to tap in and give us a two goal lead with minutes left.
However, the Cappoquin lads didn’t give up and after some sloppy defending they pulled one back. After a full 5 mins of added time Celtic managed to hold out for a deserved win and that was a big relief for all involved with this team.
The league has now reached the half-way stage and there will be a lot of hard matches to come but if the lads keep working then we should be confident of staying out of the relegation battle.
UNDERAGE
Our U11s and U14s had big wins over Brideview on Saturday last in the league. Both teams have been scoring freely recently and the 11s managed a 5-0 win while the U14s stayed at the top of their league also with a huge 8-0 win.
All the players are enjoying their soccer right now and the results are definitely showing that the training and coaching is paying off with these lads. We hope that both of these teams will go all the way now to the league finals which will be played at the RSC in Waterford in early April.
SOCCER ACADEMY AND U10S LEAGUE
The academy for U5s up to U9s has started up again on Saturday afternoons. The U7, 8 and 9 year olds are on from 3 to 4 pm, while the 4, 5 and 6 year olds are on from 4 to 5pm.
Each player is asked to wear tracksuits or warm gear if possible, as the weather is still very cold. New players are welcome and we are trying to get more girls to turnout also in the 6 to 9 age group. Girls should turn up for the 4pm session to start with.
Reminder to parents also that we do need contact numbers for all the kids so make sure we get that as soon as possible. An U10 league is also starting next week. The U10s is for boys born in 1999 and 2000, so we hope to have more information on that before next weekend.
For any information on the academy or any of our under age teams contact either Paul Donnellan at 086 8733738 or Vincent Kearney at 087 9824277.

- Fermoy through to next round -
IRISH CUP ROUND 2 VICTORY
A 2-0 victory at home over Wexford sees Fermoy’s div 3 team progress to the next round of the Irish Challenge Cup, where they have drawn Tipperary.
After Fermoy’s defeat in the Munster Challenge Cup game last weekend to Clonmel, Fermoy were out six days later in the 1st round of the division 3 ESB Irish Challenge Cup, which was held in Fermoy where they played Wexford.
Fermoy were slow to start but within ten minutes, the Fermoy girls were beginning to work the passing game they love to play. Within fifteen minutes, Liz Barry sent a great ball to Ann Galvin where she received the pass back up the field again. Liz continued on to pass the ball to Natalie Guile who in turn passed it to Nicola Howard where she sent it onto Trish Fitzpatrick who scored Fermoy’s first goal.
From there, the intensity rose and Fermoy dominated for the remaining first half. Fermoy started strong again in the second half with good passing and tackling being made by each player on the team.
Wexford however, never gave up and Fermoy showed their determination and resilience by defending well when Wexford applied the pressure on the backs and mids with ten, fifteen minutes to go. Fermoy fought well and each and every player never gave up on the pitch.
A short corner was given to Fermoy when the final whistle blew and Natalie Keniry put away Fermoy’s second goal to give the girls the deserved victory.
Player of the match, sponsored by Vanilla Boutique, Fermoy was awarded to Liz Barry. Liz was instrumental in the victory last week and worked tirelessly for the match, with some great passages of play. Team: Elaine O’Flynn, Aisling Cotter, Liz Barry, Aine O’Brien, Liz Sweetnam, Maria Daly, Ann Galvin (capt), Ciara Sexton, Nicola Howard, Natalie Keniry (1), Trish Fitzpatrick (1), Orla Cotter, Ursula Llewellyn, Trish Coughlan and Niamh Barry.
Fermoy girls would like to extend a huge thank you for the support they received on Saturday last. We wish a speedy recovery to Mary Howard and Ide Ryan who recently got injured whilst playing hockey. We look forward to their return onto the hockey pitch.
A mention too for one of our Wexford opponents, Ellen Kent, who first learned to play hockey 31 years ago as a boarder in Loreto – on that very pitch! Ellen was thrilled with the new pitch and amazed with the changes.
Fermoy took on Wexford last year in the same competition but that match was played in Midleton while the Fermoy pitch was being completed. It’s great to see Ellen still playing competitive hockey with Wexford.
DIVISION 4
Fermoy div 4 team ventured to Waterford on Sunday last to meet Waterford in leg 2 of the Munster league. On their previous meeting the result had been a draw and Fermoy were eager to rectify this and get an away win on the cards for the new year.
Fermoy got off to a great start with some great energetic runs by our youthful midfielders and some great hockey was played, Ursula and Ciara were unlucky not to get on the scorecards early on with some great saves being made by the Waterford keeper.
Louise Crowley who was solid throughout the game and who had a great game midfield linked up great with Louise Ahern and supplied ample ball to the forwards throughout the game.
A positional switch between Lourde and Ursula saw Lourde putting pressure on the Waterford defence and Fermoy were rewarded with their first of the day when a great break from Ciara Sexton resulted in a ball sent up the wing to Ursula and sent onwards to Lourde who maintained and controlled the ball and sent it past the keeper. This was a well deserved goal for Fermoy who had worked tirelessly for 20 mins at this stage.
Some great teamwork and hockey resulted in Fermoy having some great attacks but also our defence played a blinder keeping some nifty Waterford wingers at bay. Shortly before half time another great break from Ciara Sexton and Ursula Llewellyn sent a great shot into the ‘d’ which Maria O’Flaherty parked home to get Fermoy’s second of the day.
Waterford did get 1 goal back before halftime but Fermoy held Waterford in the second half to get a great 2-1 away victory.
Player of the match, which is sponsored by Toss Bryan was awarded to Ursula Llewellyn who played some fantastic hockey and lined up some great scores for her teammates and who worked tirelessly throughout the match. Well done Ursula!
With a limited panel on the day the team was as follows: Ondine Roche, Trisha Coughlan (capt), Teresa O’Sullivan, Mary Ryan and Grace Kevany in the backline; Louise Crowley, Louise Ahern, Lourde Bryan (1) and Ciara Sexton in midfield and upfront Ursula Llewellyn and Maria O’Flaherty (1).
On the line we had Mona Sexton as acting team manager for the day – thanks for all her coaching on the day and to our two loyal supporters of Brian and Niamh. Thanks also to our bus driver who got us to the match on time and who also played a blinder on the day.

- Great success in Wexford leagues -
Last weekend the finals of the Wexford leagues took place in Gorey, Co Wexford and the Mitchelstown Boxing Club were well represented with some of our own very talented boxers.
The leagues in Wexford are regarded in boxing circles as one of the toughest in the country but that didn’t bother our boxers who were really looking forward to the challenge.
Over the course of the last 8 weeks the leagues have been run throughout Wexford and at every turn the Mitchelstown Boxing Club has been there.
At first we had 8 entries but unfortunately Michael McDonagh and Robert Hussey had to pull, out due to injuries, the rest travelled to Wexford every week without complaint even though the days were very long and the training they did in preparation was exhausting but in the end it was worth it.
Of the 6 we had taking part six of our boxers reached the final and an amazing 5 won Wexford county league titles and one was one point away from the title.
The new Wexford league champions are Frank Belujsky 75kg, Vladimir Belujsky 60kg, Patrick McDonagh 46kg, Danny Keating 44kg, and Robert Hanna 85kg.
So, congratulations to the new Wexford league champions. Our other entry was Ryan Sexton who lost the final on a score of 11-10 in a well matched bout that could have gone either way.
The experience gained by all of the boxers will stand to them in the coming weeks as the Cork county, Munster and national championships approach and everyone at the club will be pulling out all the stops to ensure our boxers have every chance to take part and enjoy what is sure to be a very competitive season.
Also last Sunday in the Glen Boxing Club we had two of our underage boxers taking part in a tournament. They were Dario Murphy Green and Michael Keating, both lads have been with us a long time and it showed in their performances each looking very sharp.
They are sure to be big names in boxing in the coming years, so well done lads.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind members and their parents that due to circumstances beyond our control we will have to revert to our previous training nights with immediate effect that is Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm in Paki Fitz’s.
- Big win for Celtic -
Kilworth Celtic 2 Lismore 1
We hosted Lismore at Pound Lane on Sunday morning last in a vital top of the table clash. With a strong panel on the day, we began brightly with some fluent passing throughout the park.
However, Lismore gained the upperhand ten minutes in when they took the lead. Celtic re-grouped and got on top of the visitors from here with Mark O’Connor and Kevin Whelan impressing down the left wing.
George Heskin and Adrian Mannix were as ever efficient at midfield while Damien O’Donoghue looked to create chances for Seanie Shanahan and Paudie Lynch up front at every opportunity. We couldn’t find the equaliser before the break leaving us 1-0 down at half time.
Lismore went on the attack early in the second half but Brian Tobin and Joey Cahill flanked by Bob Allen and Whelan provided ample cover for keeper Mark Cooney. This was the catalyst for Celtic’s equaliser ten minutes into the half.
Paudie Lynch gathered the ball and flicked wonderfully over the Lismore defender before unleashing a thunderbolt from 30 yards past the stranded keeper. Lismore had an opportunity to regain the lead soon after but Celtic’s defence snuffed this out.
We then earned a corner, which was swung in by substitute Shane McCarthy and headed home by Joey Cahill to send us into the lead. This proved enough as we held out for a famous 2-1 victory. Team: M Cooney, B Allen, B Tobin, J Cahill, K Whelan, D O’Donoghue, A Mannix, G Heskin, M O’Connor, S Shanahan and P Lynch. Subs used: S McCarthy for M O’Connor and J Aherne for B Allen.
LOTTO
There was no winner of this week’s lotto jackpot of ˆ3,150. Numbers drawn were 11, 12, 15 and 22. Lucky dips went to Dinny Condon c/o Chippy, Chelsea c/o self, Mary Condon c/o Chippy, Taija Howard c/o K Howard and Eva McCormack c/o Motty.
Next week’s draw will take place at Cotter’s Bar for a jackpot of ˆ3,300. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
- BCS win Munster camogie thriller -
Blackwater Community School, Lismore defeated St Caimin’s Community School, Shannon in the Munster senior A championship final on Saturday.
In doing so they created history in becoming the first side to win the D, C, B and A in consecutive years.
In a titanic battle between two extremely committed teams it was one score that separated the teams at full time on a final score of 9 points to 8. Blackwater opened strongly and raced into a 3 point lead with excellent scored from Marie Russell, Aoife Hannon, and Michelle Tobin.
However, St Caimin’s took over in the second quarter to gain the upper hand and reached half-time on a scoreline of 5 points to 3 in favour of the Shannon outfit. At this stage the Caimin’s girls were dominant with the powerful play of Chloe Morey, Ciara McMahon and Sinead Tuohy.
In the second half free takers Morey and Tobin exchanged points to leave the game delicately balanced entering the final ten minutes with Caimins on top by 8-6.
At this stage Blackwater centreback Shauna Kiernan thundered into the game and in the final minute Michelle Tobin equalised and in added time scored an exceptional point from long range which was enough to win a close and exciting contest refereed by the well renowned Willie Barrett.
