The ongoing saga over the Mitchelstown Leisure Centre took yet another twist this week as the Cork Mart development, on which the leisure centre was to be built, was refused planning permission by Cork County Council.
Eamonn O’Brien of CCM Property Network told The Avondhu that the decision was a setback for the development.
"We received notification this week that planning was rejected”, Mr O’Brien revealed, “suffice to say we are disappointed. We will take some time for reflection, we will be considering our options as to where to go from here”.
In a further statement, Sean O’Sullivan, chief executive Cork Co-op Marts, said, “The refusal by Cork County Council to our plans for the mart site is certainly disappointing to Cork Marts. It is our first planning application in Mitchelstown, and it is fair to say that we were taken aback at the extent of the objections in the town to various different elements of the proposed development".
“However, we will not rush into any decisions at this stage. We will give careful consideration to all options and the various issues raised by the council during the process and decide our next step in due course”.
Ben Lynch, chairman of the Leisure Centre committee said that the failure to get planning permission was a temporary obstacle that can be overcome.
“Obviously we are disappointed at the initial response, but we are certainly not disheartened,” Mr Lynch said. "We knew there would be setbacks along the way and we are sure that in the long term, planning permission will be received for the site. We will be coordinating our response with Cork Marts”, he concluded.
