JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE - DIVISION TWO
Glanworth 2-12 Liscarroll 1-4
Glanworth had a convincing victory over Liscarroll in a game played in Glanworth last week. Despite heavy underfoot conditions we played good, flowing football and jumped into a five-point lead in the opening ten minutes. Sean Og Quinn, Emmett Sheehan, Alex Sheehan, Liam Cotter and Gerry O’Neill each scored and this quintet went on to play marvellous football over the full hour.
Liscarroll fought their way back into the game with a goal and a point. But Liam Cotter answered with two well-taken points. Liscarroll pointed but Alex Sheehan got his reward for the effort he was putting into the game when he scored a good goal. The half ended with another Liam Cotter point that saw the half-time score reading 1-8 to 1-1.
We were well worth the seven-point lead and we had good performances all over the field. Tristan Quirke was very composed at fullback and Liam Brennan and Gearoid Murphy were energetic and effective in the corners. Our halfback line of Johnny Magnier, Kevin Linehan and David Leahy was tight in defence and adventurous when moving forward.
It was wonderful to see Tommy Pierce back in action and his class at centrefield was very important. Tommy and Liam Cotter controlled this sector over the hour.
In the second half our defence confined Liscarroll to three points. Eoin Baker, who gave a brave, gritty performance, opened the half with a point. Emmett Sheehan scored his second point and Liam Cotter tacked on another to seal an excellent personal performance.
Gerry O’Neill was using all his guile and experience at centre forward and the other forwards benefited from his probing runs. Aidan Condon pointed and he deserved to score after playing a skilful game.
With ten minutes remaining the energetic Johnny Magnier sustained a severe knee injury. He is making a good recovery and all our good wishes to him. He is an outstanding young player and we hope that he will be back in the green and white in the not too distant future.
As soon as John Paul Cotter entered the fray he showed his class by crashing home a goal to reinforce our lead. Apart from Johnny Magnier’s unfortunate injury this was a good game for us. Ciaran Cotter was never troubled in goal and he handled the greasy ball expertly. Referee Gary Mahon controlled the game efficiently.
Team: Ciaran Cotter, Liam Brennan, Tristan Quirke, Gearoid Murphy, Johnny Magnier, Kevin Linehan, Davy Leahy, Tommy Pierce, Liam Cotter (0-5), Emmett Sheehan (0-2), Gerry O’Neill (0-1), Eoin Baker (0-1), Aidan Condon (0-1), Sean Og Quinn (0-1), Alex Sheehan (1-1). Sub used: John Paul Cotter (1-0).
JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE – DIVISION ONE
Harbour Rovers 1-14 Shanballymore 2-9
We travelled to Shanballymore for this fixture and on an excellently prepared pitch we had a well-merited win. There was plenty of good hurling in the game and coach Fergal Moloney and his selectors Arthur O’Keeffe and Morgan O’Brien will have seen this encounter as ideal preparation for the championship.
We were very impressive in the first half and at the interval we had a 1-9 to 0-3 lead. We had an impressive spread of scorers in this period with seven players raising flags. The scores came from Denis Gallagher (1-1), Sean Finn (0-2), Martin Roche (0-2), Denis Healy (0-1), Sean Og Quinn (0-1), Aidan Condon (0-1) and Brian Gallagher (0-1).
Denis Gallagher was full of zest and enthusiasm and his work rate was very impressive considering that he is still recovering from injury. His brother Brian was imperious at centre field while Denis Healy was in total control at the edge of the square. Wingbacks Michael O’Neill and Davy Leahy were tenacious and skilful while their centre back Eamonn Condon played to his normal high standard.
Martin Roche and Aidan Condon opened the scoring in the second half with a point each. Both of these young players were very impressive. Shanballymore showed their mettle by scoring a goal and two points. Denis Gallagher responded with a superb individual point.
The final ten minutes were rather strange. Our lead was never under threat but four Shanballymore points were countered by the stylish Martin Roche who raised two white flags to bring his total for the game to five points. We were still in control when Shanballymore goaled in the third minute of time added on.
Stephen Dunne is playing very well in goal and his puck outs and clearances are varied and intelligent. Patrick O’Keeffe was very sound at corner back while Jim O’Brien was back to his best form in the other corner. Pierre O’Driscoll complemented the play of Brian Gallagher at centre field with poise and skill.
All the forwards were dangerous and the three subs that were introduced put down a marker for inclusion in future starting fifteens. The game was refereed by Nelius O’Donoghue.
Team: Stephen Dunne, Patrick O’Keeffe, Denis Healy (0-1), Jim O’Brien, Michael O’Neill, Eamonn Condon, Davy Leahy, Brian Gallagher (0-1), Pierre O’Driscoll, Bill Sheehan, Sean Finn (0-2), Martin Roche (0-5), Aidan Condon (0-2), Denis Gallagher (1-2), Sean Og Quinn (0-1). Subs Used: Tristan Quirke, John Paul Cotter and Robbie Fuller.

SYMPATHY
We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of the late Mrs Mary Kelly, Ballindangan. Our condolences go to her daughter Frances, her son-in-law Dominic O’Sullivan, her sisters Bess, Nell and Dolly and her grandson David. May she rest in peace.
POKER CLASSIC
A very successful poker classic was held in O’Donnell’s Bar last weekend. The winners were: 1st Arthur Og O’Keeffe (ˆ500). 2nd Ciaran Cotter (ˆ250). 3rd Morgan O’Brien (ˆ175), and 4th Michael Finn (ˆ75).
The sponsors for the draw and spot prizes were: Seamus Coleman, Frank O’Flynn, Kevin O’Keeffe, Kevin O’Callaghan, Crossmore Transport, Auntie Mae’s Bar, Mike Healy (Jnr), Kathleen Finn, Patrick Reynolds, Ace Truck and Trailer Supplies (owner John Long). The tournament director was Joe Condon.
We thank all our sponsors and the many people who supported the event by purchasing tickets. Thanks also to O’Donnell’s Bar for hosting the classic. But this fundraising event would never have come to fruition without the hard work and enthusiasm of a group of current players. It is an indication of the spirit of our club when players would organise a fundraising event.
Go raibh mile maith agaibh go leir!
- Captain’s prize tournament a resounding success -
Recently at the club our captain, Ann Milward hosted her captain’s prize tournament. 28 players in all took part in the tournament, which was played in 2 sections over 3 nights. The tournament was a great success and was a fitting tribute to a wonderful captain.
Section A was played off on Tuesday night (12th May). There were 12 players in all taking part. The draw was split into 2 groups of 6 with each 6 playing off a round robin. The top 4 from each side progressed to the semi-finals.
After 30 round robin matches (each being 2 sets to 21) there was little to separate the players on both sides of the draw, as each section went right down to the wire. Indeed, the semi-final line-up was known.
The first semi-final saw the Wilson brothers Kieran and Brendan take on the experienced duo of Helena O’Brien and Catherine O’Farrell. The boys put up a great fight and were full of running and endeavour but it was that bit of “cuteness”, which only comes after years of playing badminton which saw Helena and Catherine progress to the final.
The other semi-final was once again a battle of youth versus experience as Isabelle White and Chris Caplice took on Mary Hanley and David Russell. This time around that “cuteness” of experience was not enough and it was the younger pair of Isabelle and Chris who progressed to the final.
The line-up for the final was Isabelle White and Chris Caplice versus Helena O’Brien and Catherine O’Farrell. It was a great final and you could see what winning the captains prize meant to all 4 players as they threw everything they had into it! However as hard as Isabelle and Chris tried, Helena and Catherine just had that little bit extra and proved to be deserving winners on a score-line of 21-12, 21-17.
Section B was played off on Wednesday (13th May) night. The format of the tournament was a seeded round robin, ie every 1st seed plays with every 2nd seed and against every other 1st seed (and vice versa) with two 1st and two 2nd seeds progressing to the final.
After 25 matches it couldn’t have been closer with only 1 point the difference between making the cut and losing out on both sides of the draw. The unlucky ones to lose out were John O’Donovan and David Bell.
The line-up for the final saw Shane Hanley and Marie Therese O’Kennedy take on Ronan Conway and Kay Hearne. After losing the first set, Shane and Marie Therese came back to win the match on a score of 18-21, 21-8, 21-18.
After 3 wonderful nights badminton it was back to The Hunter’s for “post match analysis” and of course the presentation of the prizes. Congratulations to all our winners and thanks to all who took part.
In team news it was a case of third time lucky as the mixed division 3 team won the handicap cup. This was the clubs third final this year and had come out second best in the previous 2 so there was a determination there that this would be their night. They faced a Courtmacsherry team with whom we have had some memorable matches over the last number of seasons.
The match had an unusually late start in an unfamiliar venue, 10pm in Bishopstown GAA club (Wednesday 7th May). We got off to a flier as we took the 2 ladies doubles and 1 of the men’s doubles. After taking the first set of each of the mixed the cup was secured as Mitchelstown had one 8 sets versus Courtmacs 3 (with only a potential 7 available to them!). It was a nice end to a long season.
In club news, the club’s annual general meeting (AGM) will be held in the hall on Thursday 4th June. The AGM is a very important night in the club calendar. The AGM is your chance to have a say in how your club is being run. All members are asked to attend.
To wrap up the season the club will host a social night in The Hunter’s Rest on Friday, 5th June with dinner and drinks afterwards. All members and friends of the club are invited.
Club t-shirts have been bought and orders are now being taken. The new colours are red and black and the t-shirts are available in 2 styles, a polo shirt and v-neck shirt. Both styles are available in all sizes from XS to XL. Orders are being taken at the club. Club nights will continue until the end of the month.
On the board next week are Ann Milward and Marie Therese O’Kennedy.
- Good weekend at Bantry -
The club kept on its winning ways at last weekend’s Bantry Regatta after a very successful Fermoy Regatta the previous week. The club recorded six victories at the home regatta. Then recorded two victories in Bantry.
The junior 16 quad of Lesley Ann Shinnick, Jessie Twomey, Hillary Shinnick, Marieta Baker and Breffini Harris had victories over Bantry, Killorglin, Lee and Cork Boat Club.
The other victory was in the junior 16 double scull of Lesley Ann Shinnick and Jessie Twomey. They overcame Bantry A and B crews, Killorglin, Athlunkard and Cork Boat Club. In the women’s junior 15 of Kat Shinnick and Lesley Ann Shinnick finished second.
The club also entered 3 junior 14 quads. Two of which reached the final but unfortunately the regatta committee were forced to cancel the remainder of the regatta due to strong head winds as a safety issue.
CARLOW REGATTA NEXT WEEKEND
Carlow Regatta will take place next Sunday May 31. The club will be entering only eight crews due to forthcoming exams. Three men’s junior 14 quads and a men’s junior 16 quad, a women’s junior 16 quad, a women’s junior 15 quad, a women’s junior 18 four and a women’s junior 18 Scull.
The women’s junior 16 quad will be rowing in the All-Ireland league sponsored by Waterways Ireland. This is Fermoy’s first year competing in the league. This is the second year since the league was formed.
Other regattas that the league is also involved in are Castleconnell, Athlone, Bann and Portora. At present Fermoy would be one of the favourites to captain the title.
CLUB OFFERS TO MEET MINISTER
Club officers will meet with Mr John Gormley, Minister for the Environment on Thursday morning to discuss the report that was commissioned to attempt to resolve the dispute on the weir. Fermoy Rowing Club believes the project as originally proposed by the Government would impact on the level of the river through the town.
The proponents of the works claim that the weir renovation would ease the passage upriver for salmon which the club worry will decrease the level for water too low for rowing. One thing that is not understood is, why the current weir cannot be repaired and an extra fish pass installed.
THE REMAINDER OF REGATTAS
The club will be represented at the following regattas; Dublin Metropolitan Regatta on June 6, Castleconnell on June 7, Galway June 14, Monkstown, Cork Harbour June 17, Lee Regatta (at the Marina in Cork) on June 28, Irish Championships July 10, 11 and 12 at the National Rowing Centre in Inniscarra.
FERMOY REGATTA
After a very successful Fermoy Regatta the committee would like to thank all our sponsors, our course builders James, Danny and Tony. Thank you to our secretary Donal and chairman Pa. Also to the ladies catering committee under the supervision of Marianne and the committee and anyone who helped on the day.
We would also like to thank Kieran McGann and the gardai, Ray Owens, town clerk and his staff for the wonderful job they made of cleaning up Barnane, which was complimented by several of the visiting clubs.
Also thank you to the civil defence and the sub aqua club for their help and support they have given down through the years. Without their support the regatta could not be held.
Our next autumn Sprint Regatta will be held on September 13, 2009.
VOTES OF SYMPATHY
At a recent committee meeting a vote of sympathy was passed to Ann and Tom O’Brien on the sudden death of their beloved daughter Ciara; to Noreen Joyce and family on the death of their husband and father Michael Joyce; to the Hickey family on the death of Mossy.
- Ballinhassig gain revenge -
In last year’s Co SHC we beat Ballinhassig in a replay in Riverstown. The Blues gained a degree of revenge in Pairc na Bride on Saturday night last, when they defeated us by 5 points in the SHL.
Ballinhassig have won this competition in 2007 and 2008 and are going well in this year’s campaign. They beat us by a margin of 0-13 to 0-8 and once more we were guilty of some woeful shooting which yielded a wides tally well into double figures. This was a terribly disappointing result coming just two weeks before our do or die game against Castlelyons in Ballynoe on Saturday, June 6.
Team: C O’Keeffe, T Moloney, B Murphy, A Collins, J Murphy, B Murphy, S Kearney, P Murphy, M Kearney, S Ryan, J O’Driscoll, D Ryan, D Dooley, T Broderick and S Boyce. Subs: R Cahill, L Forde and J Pratt.
JUNIOR HURLING LEAGUE

The first round of the East Cork junior hurling championship against Lisgoold will be fixed shortly and will probably be played around the weekend of June 20/21.

- National Handball Day a great success -
On May 23, 2009 Fermoy Handball Club hosted an open day as part of National GAA Handball Day running from 11am to 7pm. The day was a tremendous success as success being qualified by introducing new people to the game and the introduction of handball to our visitors who used to play handball in their younger years.
Given that the day was shared with First Holy Communion and the rugby cup final we were delighted to have had more than 60 visitors whose presence throughout the eight hour event ensured the two handball courts were never idle. With a little direction from the GAA’s slogan, Handball, a GAA sport for life.
The key theme for the Fermoy club on the day was to demonstrate that handball is a sport that can be played by man, woman, child young or old. Since we may almost rightfully lay claim to having the oldest active handballer as a member of our club. What better way to demonstrate this that in co-opting the great Jim Kennedy into the day’s events Jim 84 in June and his grandson Rory Kavanagh 15 treated us to an exhibition match which helped the club capture the day’s theme with distinction.
The sport is very much alive in Fermoy. This is self evident with a very successful history in competitions at county, provincial, national and world level. The club has produced 18 that have won at least 1 All-Ireland title and two that won world handball titles since the club was formed in 1841.
The old game of hardball was played that time. The inside was part of a golf ball and covered with animal hide. Then the rubber ball came in about 100 years ago and the size has varied over the years. Now to play 40x20 you would have to wear handball gloves and eye guards and normal runners.
The game for adults is usually for 21 aces and the best of three games.
TRAINING
Training every Saturday morning 11-1. New members are welcome.

- League defeat for ’Hill intermediates -
WATERGRASSHILL HURLING CLUB
Watergrasshill 1-11 Ballincollig 0-15
The premier intermediate hurlers went down narrowly to a strong Ballincollig side last Thursday night in a league game in Watergrasshill. In what is likely to be the last game before the championship game against Aghabollogue a good performance was important.
The ’Hill started the first half well with Paddy O’Regan putting over a few frees and Willie O’Leary finding the range from play to put the Hill ahead. Ballincollig were never out of touch however as their forwards manufactured a few scores of their own to keep the game in the balance.
Having squandered a few gilt edged opportunities for goals earlier in the half the ’Hill were relieved to see the net rattle when Willie latched onto a loose ball to kick home. Pat O’Brien added a point from play and at half-time the ’Hill were a goal up.
The second half saw Ballincollig really come into the game and they launched a series of attacks at the ’Hill goal and began pegging back the lead with some economical shooting. The ’Hill’s defensive rearguard looked comfortable with Jason Foley rarely troubled in goals, dealing well with anything that came near him.
It was the concession of soft frees however, that was punishing the ’Hill and Ballincollig were slowly looking like winning the game. The Hill kept on their shoulder with pointed frees from Paddy but they were never able to get any cohesion going up front and failed to score from play in the second half.
As time was running out Ballincollig edged a point in front and it was they who looked more comfortable on the attack. At the final whistle it was the visitors who took the points as the Hill just couldn’t reel in the deficit.
It's all eyes on the footballers with the hurlers looking ahead to June 6th in Pairc Ui Rinn. This game is now likely to be on in the afternoon after a fixture change. See usual local sources for updates.
Team: J Foley, K O’Keeffe, N O’Riordan, J Barry, S O’Leary, J O’Keeffe, C Murphy, P O’Regan, P O’Brien, D McCarthy, E Enright, S O’Callaghan, E Barry, P Cahill, W O’Leary Subs used: D O’Riordan, N Cahill, P Cronin and J McCarthy.
JUNIORS STAY AT THE SUMMIT
Watergrasshill 0-12 Castlemartyr 1-7
The junior hurlers remain at the top of the league after a well deserved win away to Castlemartyr last Monday. Missing a few regulars due to football commitments it was going to be an uphill battle but the ’Hill rose to the challenge.
Having conceded an early goal from a 21 yard free, that was generously allowed to be taken 8 yards closer, the ’Hill stepped up a gear and points from Richie Cahill, Martin McCarthy and Jimmy O’Leary put the Hill right back into the game.
Strong back play from Paul Kenneally and Aidan Barry was vital as the ’Hill forced the opposition to shoot unsuccessfully from distance and at the break only two points separated the sides with the ’Hill playing much the better hurling.
In the second half the ’Hill continued to reel in the home side with scores from James McCarthy, Ger Hogan and Colm Murphy vital to the ’Hill’s cause. With time closing in the scores were level when Jimmy O’Leary lined up a free from 50yards out. He made no mistake as it sailed between the posts and the ’Hill defended smartly to resist the home side’s efforts at snatching an equaliser.
A further score from James sealed the result and preserves the ’Hill’s 100% record in the league this year.
Team: D Ryan, P Kenneally, A Barry, B Kiernan, N Manley, D Quirke, S Bracken, C Murphy, J McCarthy, JJ Kearney, J O’Leary, R Cahill, G Hogan, M McCarthy, S Cronin. Subs used: T Barry-Murphy, C O’Riordan and D O’Leary.

Support is vital for Saturday night’s game, so come out and get behind the lads on Saturday night.
