ST. CATHERINES G.A.A.

- Action in junior and minor leagues-

It was a week which saw action in the junior and minor hurling leagues. While at juvenile level St. Catherines effort only just came unstuck when losing out to Cloyne in the semi final of the U14 C football championship. There now follows a brief report of the weeks activities.

STAR HOMES

Star Homes sponsored Junior Hurling League Division Two Round Five St. Catherines 0-11 Carrigtwohill 3-14 Running concurrent with the U14 football championship in Cloyne was this round five junior hurling league division two tie when played in Ballynoe on Wednesday evening, July 22nd last.

COUNTY MINOR PREMIER TWO HURLING LEAGUE

St. Catherine’s 2-12 Courcey Rovers 2-14
In last week’s notes this minor premier two hurling league tie was to be an away fixture for the Saturday. But as time progressed was relocated to Ballynoe on Thursday evening last. So hopefully none of you “moved” to Ballinspittle for the weekend!!!!!!

This was a cracking contest from start to finish with the sides level on four occasions through the opening quarter. Just as it looked as if the home team would shade it to the break the opposition pounced when after the initial free broke back to him, Darragh Lordan was ideally placed to goal the rebound. Setting up a 1-7 to 1-6 lead for Courcey’s at half time.

Stephen O’Brien continued to convert the frees for the Saints and a second Denis Lane point from play saw the teams level again at 1-9 apiece early in the second half.

Actually taking the lead when showing a clean pair of heels to his marker, substitute John Hurley at pace picked out Brian Mulcahy to score his second goal of the game on thirty six minutes. Both goalkeepers made excellent reflex saves.

Ed Aherne for the Saints and Stephen Nyhan for Courcey’s who scored their all important second goal four minutes from time, finished off by replacement Sean O’Brien.

Following a meeting of the county minor board on the previous evening it was revealed that St. Catherines will face Mayfield in the third round of the championship. Likewise Courcey’s have been drawn against neighbours Sliabh Rua. All ties to be played around mid August.
Courcey Rovers scorers – D Lordan (0-4 frees) (0-2 “65’s”) (1-9), S O’Brien (1-0), S Holland (0-2), G Minihane, R Connery and C Daly (0-1 each). St. Catherines scorers – B Mulcahy (2-2), S O’Brien (0-8 frees) and D Lane (0-2). St. Cath’s team: E Aherne, W Walsh, C Hegarty, M Mulcahy, C Kearney, P Roche, R O’Connor, S O’Brien, C Ahern, D Mangan, B Mulcahy, S Mills, J Neville, D Lane, I Heffernan. Subs: J Hurley for J Neville (second half), P Tobin for S Mills (43’). Also on panel: R McGrath, P Lee, A Neville and P O’Brien. Referee: Brian Murphy (Carrigtwohill).

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH IN BALLYNOE

Watergrasshill overcame the challenge of Kiltha Og on a final score of 2-11 to 1-11 when their East Cork minor B hurling championship semi-final was played at Pairc Naomh Caitriona, Baile Nua, on Monday evening, July 20th last. Referee was Maurice Mulcahy of Lisgoold.

FIXTURES

At time of drafting this report there are no definite fixtures. But both adult and juvenile divisional boards are meeting this week. So be ready!!!!!!!

THIS WEEKS JUVENILE REPORT
THIRTEEN-A-SIDE U14 “C” FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL
Cloyne 4-7 St. Catherines 4-4

On Wednesday evening, March 19th, 2008 St. Catherines just edged out Cloyne in a hugely exciting thirteen C football championship quarter final at a floodlit Ballynoe. Final score was 6-8 to 5-8. Of that tally Eoin Condon registered a whopping 6-5.

Fast forward to this fourteen C football championship semi-final played in sunny conditions at Cloyne on Wednesday evening, July 22nd last. This time the shoe was on the other foot. A bounce of the ball just favouring the opposition who this time were three point winners.

Eoin Condon tallied the entire Saints score of 4-4 and while this time it wasn’t enough to save the Saints challenge it was still a phenomenal performance from a young player who could cause consternation everytime he was on the ball.

It was an Eoin Kearney pass which released Condon who had the Saints and the games first score with a cracking close in finish on seven minutes. Maybe the second goal was of the soft variety when the keeper slipped.

But they all count and further timely passes from Cormac Mulcahy and Jonathan Burke both finished off by the prolific Condon saw the Saints enjoying a 3-2 to 0-4 half time lead against a Cloyne outfit who may have been misled by a colossal league victory over the Saints earlier in the year.

There’s no doubt though that the opening exchanges of the turnover turned this contest on its head. Brian O’Shea excellent in the corner goaled after just nineteen seconds. Then JJ O’Neill charged up field before finishing with a second goal all inside two minutes. Game on.

Brian O’Shea and Eoin Condon now with limited supply, continued to be the most dangerous front players on the pitch and by the three quarter mark it was all square at 3-4 apiece. Very much in the melting pot and very much up for grabs. Brian O’Shea completing his hat trick looked to have scored the crucial fourth Cloyne goal on fifty five minutes.

When Liam Murphy followed up with a few well taken points the gap had stretched to six points and there didn’t appear to be a way back. Oh ye of little faith! Shane O’Brien thundering up the field, toe to hand finds Eoin Condon who suddenly unleashes a thunderbolt across the posts right into the top corner at the other side for a stunning goal.

But time ran out and the saints were still pressing at the finish. It was Cloyne who were more relieved to hear the full time whistle. Great team effort. Scorer: E Condon (4-4). Team: Richard Condon, Jack Buckley, Cathal Galvin, Brian Davis, Stephen O’Donnell, Shane O’Brien, Cormac Mulcahy, Adam Clohessy, Cian Doyle, Jonathan Burke, Eoin Kearney, Rory Galvin, Eoin Condon (captain). Sub: Shane O’Regan for Brian Davis (35’). Also on panel: Thomas Daly, Michael Cronin, Jonathan O’Connell, Michael O’Connell, Ronan Geary and Christopher O’Donnell. Referee: Niall Barrett (Carrigtwohill).

U14, U16 & U18 REGISTRATION NIGHTS

Registration forms and fees for the above age groups must be with the league in the coming weeks so with this in mind all players wishing to sign up for the coming season can do so by attending a registration night in the soccer pitch next Wed and Thurs, 5th and 6th August respectively evening from 7-8pm.

It is imperative that all players wishing to play turn up on one of these nights otherwise they will not be allowed play at the start of the season. Note: Venue for registration is the soccer pitch between the hours of 7-8pm Weds and Thurs, 5th and 6th August. All players for the above categories are asked to bring along their registration fees on the night when signing up.

The fees for each group as follows. Note: These fees also cover season membership with ˆ2 per home game contribution the only other requirement throughout the season - Super value in any sport!!! U14 and U16 - ˆ10 per player; U18 - ˆ15 per player.

U12 TEAM

At the time of going to press it looks unlikely that an U12 team will be formed for the coming season.

However, if there are players out there who want to sign up for the U12 team they can still do so by turning up on either of the two registration nights on 5th and 6th August. If we don’t have the required numbers for the U12 age group then players wishing to compete for a starting position with the U14s are welcome to sign for this team instead.

There is no rule that prevents a younger player playing at a higher age group so if there are U12s interested make sure you come along on the nights in question. Any parents with questions or queries relating to any juvenile teams can contact the club on 086-0836930 and a club officer will be happy to answer any questions parents or intending juvenile players may have.

The club would again appeal to parents of players to ring the above number if they are in a position to get involved or help out in any way. One of the main problems for the club is a lack of parent involvement at management level as well as at a transport level when away games must be contested.

We would appeal to any parent with the slightest interest to contact the club and see how they can help out in the coming season. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Training for the above age groups will commence week starting 10th August so you have been warned. Management teams for the coming season are as follows.

U12 - Dependent on numbers - Looking for at least two parents to take up managers roles with this age group.
U14 - Stephen Drislane. We are currently looking for one parent to assist Stephen in this management role.
U16 - John Caplice and Tom Downes
U18 - Kevin Wheeler and Gerard McCarthy. Junior - Joe Aherne.

JUNIOR SEASON UNDERWAY 19TH AUGUST

Celtic juniors commence their 2009/2010 campaign on 19th August with their first outing in the Tony Bolger Cup. Beaten in the final last year on penalties I’m sure Joe and the lads will be hoping to go one better this year.

Junior training and match friendlies also in the pipeline for the coming weeks so all junior players are asked to keep in touch. Again Kilworth Celtic are still looking for new junior members to join.

If you are aged 17 or over and would like to get involved at U18 or junior level you can again contact a club member on the above mobile for more details.

The juniors prepare for the season start with a tournament outing in Conna. First round of games in this competition commencing Thursday, 6th August with kick off in the first game of the night timed for 6.30pm sharp. There will be three games on the night so all players will be asked to attend.

All juniors please note: Membership is now due and can be submitted to any club officer - All membership must be paid before 19th August otherwise players will be prevented from lining out due to insurance requirements.

Again don’t say you were not warned. As you can see above busy times so it is imperative that the underage players attend the registration nights if we are to contest at the various age group levels this season.

CARRAIG NA BHFEAR G.A.A. CLUB

- Clinical Lisgoold advance -

EAST CORK MINOR B HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Carraig na bhFear 0-08 Lisgoold 4-19

Carraig na bhFear were knocked out of the East Cork minor B championship by a stronger Lisgoold team in Rathcormac at the first round stage. This was a disappointing result for the team, who were without the services of some key players through injury and holidays.

The real damage was done in the first half, as Lisgoold raced into an early and substantial lead, after Cian Dorgan had levelled the scoring early on for Carraig at a point apiece.

Notching up 1-11 without reply, Lisgoold showed some great teamwork and after Padraig Dineen had Carraig’s second point of the half, they added another 1-01 before the interval to lead comfortably at half time on a scoreline of 2-13 to 0-02.

Carraig kept working, determined to put in a better second half showing. Cian Dorgan traded early points with Lisgoold and while a comeback always seemed out of reach, it is to the team’s credit that they stuck to their task for the 60 minutes. Lisgoold scored two more goals, while Carraig had points from John Healy, Aaron Dorgan and Cian Dorgan from frees, to bring the final score to Lisgoold 4-19 Carraig 0-08.

While the result may suggest otherwise, this team has shown real improvement this season under the coaching of Brian and Aidan Hegarty, Don Hegarty and Pat Noonan, with most of this young team underage again next year, there is no doubt further improvement can be made.

Beidh la eile againn, until then, keep up the hard work! Team: Padraig O’Sullivan, Thomas Hegarty, Tommy Carey, Kieran Minihane, John Mullins, Paul Geaney, Joseph Murphy, John Healy, Aaron Dorgan, Padraig Dunne, Cian Dorgan, James Cahill, Padraig Dineen, Kieran Crowley and Darren Twomey. Subs: James Meehan for Padraig O’Sullivan and Padraig O’Sullivan for Darren Twomey.

JUNIORS WIN AS B'S GO DOWN TO AGHEDS IN LEAGUE

There were mixed fortunes for the junior hurling teams last weekend in their respective league fixtures.

On Friday night last, 24th July, Carraig’s junior A hurlers overcame a strong Midleton challenge in their final league outing, on a scoreline of 1-18 to 2-14.

Two second half goals for Midleton kept them right in contention. Martin Hickey, Ronan Spillane, Paul Murphy and Bernard Murphy were in top form for Carraig, who are now finalising their preparations for next weekend’s eagerly awaited third round championship clash with Dungourney.

The win leaves Carraig in second place in the league with 11 points from our 7 games, which may be good enough for a place in the final depending on results elsewhere.

On Saturday night, the junior B hurlers unbeaten league run came to a halt when they were beaten by a strong Aghada team in Rostellan. Tom Neally, Stephen Casey, Nicky Pike and Tony Dunne fought hard for an understrength Carraig, but the home side was on top throughout, running out winners 1-15 to 0-05 to overtake Carraig at the top of the division 3 section 1 table.

The junior Bs will face Carrigtwohill in the quarter-final of the East Cork championship. No fixture has yet been made for this. Carraig face Dungourney in East Cork Championship All roads lead to Carrigtwohill this Sunday night, 2nd August, for the eagerly awaited junior A hurling championship third round clash against Dungourney.

This is a repeat of the same pairing in last year’s third round, which was played in Ballynoe, with Carraig winning by two points on that occasion. It promises to be another close affair this time around.

Carraig has been training diligently for the game and we encourage all of our supporters to make the effort to get behind the team on Sunday night. Throw in is at 7pm, best of luck to the team. Ar aghaidh na bhFear!

THREE COUNTIES MOTORCYCLE CLUB

- Cheque presented to Cancer Research Unit -

Aid Cancer Treatment Cork
Last Saturday saw our chairman, Patsy Cahill lead us out on our last spin in relation to the annual Jack Murphy Run for this year. Our destination this time was the Cancer Research Unit in the University Hospital Cork.

There was a great feeling of pride in our club and community as we had a presentation cheque on board for ˆ15,860 this was a super figure and a figure we could have never thought possible in this very tough and hard economy we find ourselves in at the moment, but again you the public stood up to the plate and gave so generously again in supporting this ever growing and popular motorcycle run in memory of our founding chairman the late Jack Murphy.

Once we arrived at the hospital we were met by Rita Murphy - Jack’s wife, Pat McCarthy of ACT and Yvonne Davidson director of ACT in the hospital. We were offered a tour of the facilities in the cancer unit by two of the therapy administrators to which we were very glad to partake in and see where your money goes.

To say we were all in shock at the realisation of this terrible disease would be an understatement even to try and understand what it must be like for those patients that have to go through this process to try and beat this terrible disease is unreal, but we were left in no doubt that the staff of ACT and the hospital are 110% committed in always providing the very best treatment possible at all times.

One aspect they went into in detail was prostate cancer and explained that at the moment if a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer he will have to undergo treatment five days a week for six weeks but with this new machine that will be on board shortly he will only have to go up once a week for six weeks for his treatment, which means if you are living in Cork, Kerry, Limerick or further a field this will be a huge benefit in your recovery.

Thanks very much also to all the staff of the hospital and ACT for their continued commitment to try and offer us a better quality of life.

A FEW DRINKS

Once back home safe and sound we parked up the bikes and went for a few drinks to celebrate an end of what was one of the best Jack Murphy runs so far, a big thank you to all members who turned up for what turned out to be another great night out.

THANK YOU

So with the run done for another year all I have to do is to thank each and everyone of you equally who supported us through-out the year and helped make this such an enjoyable event.

A big shout out has to go too to all the motorcycle riders (around 200) who without them and their support there would be no run at all.

Finally on behalf of the club I would like to thank you again and hope that ye will continue to support us in the future.

OUR NEXT CLUB MEETING

Our next meeting will be in the Glocca Maura Inn, next Wednesday night, at 8.30, if you are thinking of joining the club or need any further information why not just come along to the meeting.

The meetings are held their first Wednesday of every month or just give myself Paul a call on 087-6605793.
